I read the same thing the first time that I read Johnny's autobiography but it is only a while after that I first heard the song and agreed why the Man in Black himself loved it.
he has one of the purest vocies and this is the purest song. i love it! He is definately one of the greatest artist/actors ever. This is my fav song by him and on of my favs of all time.
My grandpa was a huge Highwaymen fan and he always played his guitar along with this song. He passed away from cancer in 2007 and we played this song at his funeral. He taught me so much and obviously gave all of his children and grandchildren great knowledge of fantastic music! LOVE YOU PAPA!
Amazing, truly amazing. At 13 I realized what I was missing and gave the 'Old timers' music a try. I've listened to songs like these ever since. Nothing today has as much meaning or power as what Kris and Johnny, Willie and Waylon, And all the other artists from their time. I'd happily go to one of Krises concerts then any new artist. This is coming from a 15 year old.
This is one of my all time favorite songs..... Kris is just simply an awesome song writer!! I always love to watch him sing this song!! Awesome Awesome!!! Thanks for posting!! *****
@kitki91 unless you're joking about kris' vocal range, pick-up a copy of 'highwaymen' the road goes on forever. waylon, willie, johnny and kris together. they cover a studio version of this song which is very nice. kris' vocals aren't even too bad on this recording. also has 3 or 4 'rockin' c&w tunes. produced by don was, it is their best one.
@1skullduggery No i was not joking, i was actually referencing that version of the song when Waylon and Johnny were harmonising with him, i was just saying how he woud have loved them to be there singin with him......so take a chill pill, i'm a huge fan of KK and i love his voice no matter wat anyone else says okay! and i also have the Highwaymen The road goes on forever album just so u know :-)
@kitki91 i love his material, as well as his vocals. i own most of his cd's and a few dvd's.you're taking what i said out of context. i'm just so used to hearing people bash his vocal ability. they don't realize he is more of a stylist as opposed to crooner or ballad type singer. i was merely making a comment on what you mentioned. so if it offends you i will not comment to you in the future. so break the prozacs in half & go crawl back under your rock, you pretentious twot!
@1skullduggery Ok calm down....i thought you were suggesting that i was saying that his voice is crap............and i'm not a pretentious twot.....but wat did u think i was getting at with my comment?
@JoAqUiNBandit hey me m my sister used to sing this we knew it word for word we cudnt have been older then 7 and 10 we loved chart music (me) n rock my sister but pop dont tell the stories like these guys do/did we loved kris n being from the uk thats not heard of very much xx

I saw Kris play in Pennsylvania a few months ago and it may have been the most emotional performance I've ever witnessed. He puts his heart and soul into every song he plays and is one of the best song writers to ever walk the earth
Kris wrote it. It was released on his album "The winning hand"(1982), and he sang it in concert "Live from Austin" 1981. He was inspired by a scene in the movie "The grapes of Wrath" (1940) by John Ford with Henry Fonda. Incredible song, incredible singer-songwriter.
Kristofferson wrote it about 1981, it is inspired by a theme from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and this cut and the one on Kris' Broken Freedom Song album recorded live in San Francisco are the best versions I have heard.
I read the same thing the first time that I read Johnny's autobiography but it is only a while after that I first heard the song and agreed why the Man in Black himself loved it.

This song depicts a scene from "The grapes of wrath" by Steinbeck. Fantastic piece of Americana!

This may be the only kristofferson song, that i think is better with him singing, instead of Johnny Cash.
