This song was originally written in the mid seventies by Canadian ,Terry Jacks, of (Seas in the sun and The poppy family) fame .The Beach Boys cut the bed tracks in 1978 when Carl Wilson was in full force. An agreement for co writing credit for Al Jardine was worked out, as he wrote the lyrics for the last verse and rearranged the vocal harmonies. It's amazing how some people always want to hog all the credit.
The song was released on Al Jardine's "Postcard from California" CD. It was first issued last year, but a reissue with bonus tracks is coming this November, so I suggest you wait for this one! Look for it on Amazon.

I think this sounds like something from the mid-late '80s "America's Band" period, except better than most of the stuff they put out then. Also, Bruce is definitely on here too---toward the end, you can hear him sing the line "just let it be." I'd kind of assumed Al did all the overdubs himself, and everything else was the original tracks---didn't know Brian and Mike had participated recently. Maybe that's a good omen!
@thefonz003 You're right about Bruce - when the song was originally released last year, Bruce wasn't included in the credits, but it was since revealed that he was on the record too. I'm not sure he's the one who's singing that line though.
@Stingrayalan That line sure sounds like him; during the late 80s, he would often get one line or so per song (Somewhere Near Japan, Still Crusin'). Apparently this song is originally from the "M.I.U." era, but I'd be surprised if some work wasn't done on it in the 80s as well (the synth parts in particular). Brian's vocals sound like something from the mid-late 80s; maybe he also recently did some of the lower parts on the chorus. I'd guess this song was worked on, off-and-on, over time.
Thanks to David B for alerting me on this. Good luck on the single--it's for a great cause. Very appropriate song considering the Japanese tragedy in recent weeks. Nice performace by Al & group--nice to hear CW & BW. Al is to be commended for taking the leadership on this. Mike always had a great sense of vocal bass lines, as Carol did on electric bass. Today's singers should take notice. It shouldn't take 50 hours per song & Pro Tools vocal tuning to make great records. Just talent. Fred
I'm in tears listenjing to this. The true--real sound of The Beach Boys--no one could ever put their voices together like they did. & Carl's voice--& Brian singing like he used to. This is a vocal gem--Thank-you Al. I miss Carl more as the years go by. & that incredible harmony! Wolfsky9
this is awesome, this is a true Beach Boy sound, something I truly miss in the terrible world of fake singers. Just had to listen to this twice, hopefully I'll be able to get the cd when it comes out.
einfach nur geil. das klingt nach total schöner "beach boys" musik. es lädt ein zum träumen. ich bin seit ca 20 jahren "beach boys" fan und träume immer noch von einem neuem studioalbum der jungs.
It's amazing to pratically hear no difference in Alan's voice over the years. Just pick a song sung by him in the early 80s and compare it with today's work. This guy must be a miracle ;)
One of my biggest wishes is to have one more Beach Boys album. Let them do a few songs from Carl solo and Dennis solo, put over new instruments and overdub it with todays vocals from Mike, Alan, Bruce and Brian.
Bring back some magic guys! You need eachother, and we need you
Just a terrific song... common guys let's get it together again...Write,sing and realease again. Brian, Al, Mike ,Bruce, Jeffrey Foskett, and Matt Jardine... Cannot be closer than that to having Carl back...
Awesome. I hope this is only a taste of things to come. I saw a number of things here on YouTube recently with Brian and Al together, such as at the "We are the World" recordings and the Person of the Year Awards honoring Neil Young. Maybe the Beach Boys will do a new album of unfinished songs with Carl and Dennis recordings. They are the Greatest Band Ever and new releases like this could introduce their genius to a whole new generation much the same as Rockband has done for the Beatles.
It just catches you - the more that you listen to it. Carl just stops you when his voice comes in. Keep it coming Al Jardine. Maybe this gets them together for a Super Bowl performance reunion - 50 year anniversary. Wishing the ending wasn't a fade but a big slide down vocal chord fading to the birds and waves.
Catchy tune, nice. Great Carl vocals, indeed. There must be enough in the vaults to do more with this kind of stuff. 2011 should be good year for that....
@thatluckyoldsun Exactly! For starters, let's get Child is Father of the Man and the rest of the Smile stuff finished. There's a load of stuff from the early '70s I'd love to hear given this treatment.
Al Jardine sent an EP containing four songs (including this one) to a few fans that had sent him their ticket stubs for the "Brian/Al" shows he was supposed to perform at.
Needless to say, the EP quickly spread amongst other fans!
@RayRoark2009 its new and its old. obviously older parts to it for the simple fact that Carl who sings lead on one of the choruses passed away in the late 90s

This song was written mainly by Canadian Terry Jacks of "Season's in the sun" and Poppy Family fame.

@Javier23gol That is not Brian's vocals from now, it's his vocals from when the track was originally done.

imagine the beach boys reuniting with brian wilson, mike love, al jardine, bruce johnston and david marks in 2011.
and then the only thing missing for 2012 is a reunion of the stones with bill wyman and adding mick taylor as second guitarist.
