My parents went to see The Glenn Miller Orchestra at The Balinese Room in Galveston, Texas in 1941 or 1942. The Miller band had to cancel (this may have been when the band went overseas to entertain the troops) and Phil Harris and his band filled in. Mr. Harris dedicated this song to my mother. Harris and his wife, Alice Faye were married in Galveston --which at the time was the Las Vegas of the Gulf Coast. The Balinese Room was destroyed by Hurricane Ike a few years back.
This is Phil's second recorded version...he first did it for Vocalion in 1937 but this one was made for the ARA label in 1946...I like this one better....great band, and check out the cool guitar and piano fills!
@chumshot1 Honestly, Phil was awesome. I think that's what we kids say nowadays. Back then, we would've said he was swell or even dreamy. Phil was swell!
Now, Jack and Rochester were swell too. Jack had the power and the personality to keep the show going. How could we have something like the relationship with the Colmans without Jack? With Phil, the chemistry would be all wrong.
Now with Rochester, who could tease Jack the way he does?
@lano600 Lol yeah we kids today xD GOd, If I were around back then, it'd be like a Jonas Brothers concert in the studio audience, I would be freaking out LOLZ Yes, Jack never stopped working, that was one of his faults I think, in real life, he cared tooo much about his show and his people, which is never real bad, but it made him such a perfectionist. And Roch and Jack took a major step in segregation by doing the things they did on the show, helping blacks out a lot ithink. Jack is def my fave

Phi Harris recorded Led Out Of Bondage at some point,
possibly in the early '50s, but I haven't been able to find it.
Can you help?

doesn't Nick Nolte quote this during a "therapy" session in "The Prince of Tides"?

He first recorded it but it was written by Andy Razaf

@guitaress1 Andy Razaf - didn't he co-write with 'Fats' Waller?

It may well be a Western Swing Classic, but Phil Harris wrote it and first recorded it.

I stand corrected. He did NOT write it.
