I've heard all the comments about how the travellers afford these weddings by not paying taxes and through suspect means, but how does this regular family pay the $100-150k these affairs are said to run? I know Sam worked, so I'm sure her savings went toward it, but still that leaves an incredible amount yet. The travellers may save for years in anticipations of these events, but I don't think her family would have.

They had the reception at 'the local social club', not some ritzy venue, and I may be wrong, but it appears they have a buffet rather than a formal sit down dinner. Also, from what I saw the decorations look home made. These factors alone would have been a huge saving. I highly doubt therefore that Sam's family paid in the six figures all up. :)
I don't understand why these people left their caravans to be demolished. I suppose it could be out of some weird form of protest, but the whole purpose of caravan is it's mobility. But then the displaced people were able to get conventional housing, so maybe they didn't want the caravan anymore.

Dale Farm is located in the 'Green Belt' which means it's in an area which has strict restrictions on density and urbanization. I believe the residents of Dale Farm were fighting for about 10 years or more for planning permission. Some of the trailers/residences received it- others did not.

I think that there is pure unfair prejudice toward the gypsy's. I feel like people are mad at them because of their customs and life style which absolutely ridiculous, it is almost as if the Gypsy's are hated because outsiders fear them.
Despite what everybody may say, I had a massive smile on my face during that first dance. They look so happy - the couple are ecstatic to be together, and I think the song was perfect! It's not what I would choose for my wedding, but it's their culture and I think it's incredibly interesting to see how they live!

I do think its a very strange community , the girls are all slutty , and yet they can only kiss boys , they're all virgins. And usually you see girls like that swearing and getting rowdy , but these girls are strangely respectful and despite their appearance their almost always family first and polite and lady like when speaking . Its very strange . But I think I like their culture , its nice. They care very much for their people.

If they've the money for these first communions and weddings, they've the money to apply to council and build acceptable housing/extensions like every other non-gypsy

@blondie9191 But these people have lived in that park for 7 years and wanted to continue living there. If they had got council permission for their buildings they'd still be there. So for some, it IS in their way of life. Local councils annoy me too, but they bought land with the intention of settling on it, to stop travelling, to make a permanent

They are move likely to settle down in this day and age but of the changing times. Not to mention that people are more hard to except the gypsy way.

Travelers buy cheap land that does not have planning permission. You can't have people simply settling down where they want.
If they want to travel, why don't they travel back to Ireland where most of them originate from. Evicting travelers from an illegally occupied site at Dale Farm is set to cost the taxpayer around 18 million pounds!!
'Preserving their culture'? Come on. Fake tans, petty crime, mullets, tax avoidance and children dressing like hookers! Is that worth saving?

Despite what everybody may say, I had a massive smile on my face during that first dance. They look so happy - the couple are ecstatic to be together, and I think the song was perfect! It's not what I would choose for my wedding, but it's their culture and I think it's incredibly interesting to see how they live!

@kaylathefashiongirl All they are doing is imitating what is thrown at them 24/7 by the media. Perhaps traveler parents don't discourage it because the timeline for their girls is sped up (marrying at 16, etc.), but it's what is all around and whether or not "normal" girls dance like that around their grandmothers, it's drilled into their heads to use when their teenagers.
