My only complaint. Your songs are too freakin' short. So I find myself listening to them over and over again when I really should be working. (Don't tell my boss). But seriously, a great song. Thanks.
This composition is so unique in its nature. Orchestral elements and a 6 part harmony neatly strewn together among sharps, flats, augmented and diminished chords. Bravo.
I genuinely prefer your quieter stuff, since the thing that shines is your great harmonies; in loud, distorted full textures it just becomes muddy and you have to simplify or it's unpleasant to listen to(usually), the instruments and pace in this really work with it all and allow for nuances and dynamics, waffling a bit
This is so amazing. I love the moment when you finally resolve that suspension to a major chord-- it's so perfect. I wish I could write stuff that makes this much musical and emotional sense. Keep up the good work!
Jack, have you considered covering any Tally Hall songs (with or without Nataly?) It would be such a treat and I think you'd have a blast with their vocal and instrumental arrangements.
my adventure through your music has been damn good. someone showed me the pomplamoose cover of telephone a long time ago. I recently revisited the channel to listen to it, and discovered that you two had originals. phenomenal originals. I always knew there were links to respective solo stuff for you two, but I only just got around to clicking it. You now have my undivded musical attention. i've been in a musician's lull as of recent, and you've inspired a lot of creative ideas for me.
@YouDunPlayGuitar - This is almost exactly the same story that I have. Crazy! But I was introduced through the Beyonce cover. I listen to Jack almost everyday and I just love it and can't get enough. I love the harder stuff, but it's also nice to chill out to the stuff on VS4, too.
Jack. You're. I don't mean it in a little girlish way: you are my hero. Not because you are rich and famous (are you even, really?). But because I am a 22 year old soon to be unemployed (summer employment only lasts so long) guy with a music degree, multi-instrumentalist (primarily bassist) who writes songs. But could never record them alone because I am not a good enough singer, or drummer. I'm no good at recording. You are amazing at everything, and you still take time to respond to fans. love
@mdille00 no, i havent heard it. ive heard tons of his songs on you tube and what not, and ive liked everything ive heard. i will have to try to research that though :)
Last night I saw a band called Tornado Rider. Another group called Judgement Day opened. The guys on cello and violin are in Judgement day. Weird coincidence. Lovin' your music, man. Theirs too.
Jack, I don't care what you post....grungy, orchestral; I like 'em all, dood. You are doing great things with your music, and I'm just damn happy every time I see that you've posted a new video song.
A truly beautiful piece. While I very much enjoyed your "heavier" material, these new, more textured and subtly layered recordings display your increasing mastery of your personal recording methods. It is one thing to hear great sounds inside of your own head; it is quite another to be able to bring them out and give them life, for others to hear and enjoy. Thank you so much for sharing the sounds inside your head with us.
Fecking Love VS4, I also like the fact that you have two sides, not the just the grungier heavier side that you've the lovely more orchestral side to your music too!
You are by my standards a great man. Your music has influenced the world, and will continue to do so, so long as you remain in human memory. Don't let the hard times get you down, Jack. You are an amazing person.
Every great artist has their own ballads, and although their not heavy, their really great songs, that show off his incredible, so his music is not changing styles, cuz after all music can be emotions interpreted in sounds, and if u cant appreciate it, then ur music taste needs to mature a little, and of course stop being closed minded :)
I'm glad I can visually see this being recorded, because I would have never known all of the instruments used. Now that I can see them, I can actually hear them. Does that make any sense?
I should have bought VS4 (the CD) at your Philly show, but I got too excited after we talked about Calvin and Hobbes that I completely forgot to buy it. Fantastic song... seriously.
@andrewsmithify - no worries, homie. i'm missing that stuff, too. The year that I recorded VS4 was a really tough year for me personally, and i ended up writing a really quiet record - i don't regret it at all. But since it came out, I've been missing my grungier, harder side. I've gotten into to a lot of intense music recently, and it's starting to influence my next round of compositions - so my guess is my next batch of songs will sound way heavier and grungier than VS4
@jackcontemusic artists are free to express themselves in any way, mood, and sound possible. I fully support your music and songs in every way possible and although my personal preference is your style back in the days of Eat, Lonely Ghost, and Like a Match, VS4 was a powerful and well produced album. I am so excited to hear that you will be further experimenting and i'm sure everyone else is just as excited to hear what new type of genre you come up with next.
@jackcontemusic hey jack, that's awesome! don't get me wrong i bought vs4 and dug it, it was nice to see a different side, but at the same time i love tracks such as the giant or yeah yeah yeah. thanks for replying!
@jackcontemusic I absolutely adore these orchestral things. I think they show enormous skill and talent- even more so than your heavier grungier stuff. "Off with his head" was what made me subscribe to you! Don't you dare forget about these wonderful instruments you're using! If I get more like "Long Long Time Ago" I could consider you my new favorite musician. I love these things. I'm not you, so I'm not the musician here- but I would love nothing better than this combined with your heaviness!
@jackcontemusic Don't feel like you have to 'miss' any of that stuff, dude.
It's always important for an artist to show variety - and you've certainly shown that with this album: I personally adore both grungy and 'softer' music.
