This was pretty common when I was in boot camp back in the mid 1980's.
Kind of like the 'Code Red' in 'A Few Good Men' it was offically forbidden but the powers that be didn't go out of their way to stop it either.
It usually does get slackers to straighten up but I know now that there are better ways to handle guys like Pyle

Well there are two big difference.
1. If you make it through the end of boot camp you have a sense of team work and self respect not lets kill the DI and myself.
2. It is impossible to transfer live ammunition in the living quarters.
