@Bak3dB3an It can obviously be build to whatever size within reason but it certainly is not the most efficient way to do so; multi story construction is definitely not worth it. we have actually been working on a modernized version of these off grid construction principles that is way faster to build. You can always get satellite / wireless phone/internet so that's not an issue. Got a particular project in mind?
@titan8or it is located in Myakka City FL, just north of Sarasota - pretty central in the state :-). We have a page on meetup dot com under Earthship Florida I recommend you join. We are in the process of forming a cooperative to turn the property into an educational technology park.
For all of you living between DC and Boston: Michael Reynolds will be doing a 3 day conference in Philly 4/17 to 4/19 on how to build these! Philly will be building the first official urban Earthship! check out the earthship website and search for philly
@MessIahmake I think the only drawback is the time and labor involved in this. I'd bet every small town has at least one big tire pile somewhere, not to mention how many can be found in a city. Any auto shop that sells tires has to do something with the tires they replace, and many have a field or backlot somewhere that is their dumping ground.
@MessIahmake there's plenty of used tires out there - but you are correct; it is not a building method to market towards the "average Joe". VERY labor intensive. We've actually developed our own building method that incorporates the earthen thermal mass effect but in a much quicker way to build and conventional looking fashion. The foundation is concrete BTW.
@josephdupont thanks Joseph! no it is not finished yet; the main reason being the project has been on hold for about 8 months now. we were originally contracted by a private client to build it as a residence and this person has since run into health issues. we are in the process of putting together a partnership with multiple people & businesses to purchase the property, finish the build & launch the businesses. (see collaborative biz launch videos below; others on our channel).
@sunshine19841988 we could be that builder but we're not interested in building any more earthships - WAY too labor intensive and time consuming. we've developed our own zero energy construction method as a result of building this project that has all the benefits of earthship construction without the time consumption involved.
@TheDudeRulez09 I think we might have the definition of what "zero energy" means mixed up then. By "zero energy" I mean not having to hook up to any grid tied / municipal provider of electricity. Under that definition this is a zero energy building as it generates all its own power.
@thecampustv i see, its very confusing as the already accepted phrase of being off grid is the norm, I have heard the term zero energy before and the people saying it claimed that the home took zero energy to produce and use.
@lusterwings thanks! it's not finished yet. you can check out the latest on the video response Earthship FL 2 July 2010. also on facebook under Earthship FL & the campus TV
yes. it took over 9 months and went all the way up to state level. We actually successfully amended the state building code to allow alternative engineering to be incorporated without red tape.
We have a photo file on Facebook where you can check it out. Youtube doesn't allow URL's to be posted but you can find us on there under forward slash thecampusTV

This will be good for when the zombie apocalypse happens and you have all these tires around.....

Can an earthship be the size of a mansion with several floors, a cinema room, spa, sauna etc?
btw if no lines go to the home, then is there a way to get a telephone line or internet connection?

@TheDudeRulez09 the actual definition is a net (grid) energy consumption and zero carbon emission; just check "zero energy building" on wikipedia.
