    HOW TO RACE:

    1. Be rich

    2. Be handsome

    3. Be lucky

  • Eees sporty, yeeeas?

  • That didn't explain how to start anything! I'm 17 yrs old with a valid drivers license and not much money and I want to know every step of how to start, my dad's a football guy and did't even know that there were other types of car racing than street, drag, and nascar! I am an excellent student and I really want to race!!!! pls help.

  • Good job. i liked it. keeo them coming.

  • Brand manager = marketing person

  • SVT and SRT didn't really say much...

  • Rofl!!!! I had to comment.

    "Lucky Sperm Club"

  • The more I watch this show, the better it gets...

  • Why does Fiat have SRT working on the 500? I'll eat my keys if SRT can make a better 500 than Abarth did.

  • ralph gilles is the man. glad he's running SRT

  • Love the enthusiasm in Drive newest videos, wasn’t sold on 'Drive' at first but it's really come good! Keep watching!

  • Hey guys, love the channel so far. I have a suggestion; maybe in the thumbnail for each video you could put the title of which "show" this is an episode of (road testament/tuned etc.)

  • 1:20: "Fantastic handling bagels"?

  • Is Leo somehow related to barney stinson? Always suited up, you know!

  • Excellent RT Leo. Did you see J.F's asian brother from another mother walk by, 1:41 in!! :-)

  • I really appreciated this, as short as it was. Thanks leo

  • anyone know the music in th background?

  • @illyay in the end, that is

  • you rock Leo!

  • I'm 18 and do HPDEs with Porsche Club and my dad lets me use his boxster. The feeling on the track is truly one of the greatest I have ever had.

  • Anyone remember the Detroit auto show from a few years back, when the Mercedes display was made all out of ice to market their 4matic system? That was awesome

  • I'm really starting to like this show.

  • Hey Leo....you need a shorter camera man.

  • great coverage and topics. nice work Leo!

  • How tall is Leo... less than 5 foot 5 inches?

  • @SmartEnthusiast 5' 4" and shrinking with age. Thanks for reminding me of both!

  • Awesome tips! I love the Drive network!

  • ok so first thank you leo for the great video... like always. But my problem is im 18 years old and i dont have the money to buy those cars. Isnt there any better way? talking about generally getting into racing and/or getting into ralley or drifting. Whatever is the easiest to answer.

like always i appreciate the answer

  • @Madtac1

Honestly find guys that are doing it. Local race teams and groups. Ask them to help out, bug them even. Work for free if you have to. If they think you're worth it, they put you on their crew. Then work your tail off, and let them know your passions for driving or whatever. Maybe they let you test run a few times... Pay your dues.

I have a friend that did that, he just wanted to be on the pit crew of a race team. Now he is the fuel man on a winning grand-am race team.

  • More Shakedown University!

  • Damn it Leo, why must you kick sooo much of the ass? Leo:kicking ass :: my wife:spending my money

  • I would like to watch a full episode with Ralph Gilles. First time I saw him was on jaylenosgarage, really good interview. Or don't and I will still watch every episode.

  • Excellent Leo. Good job Sir.

  • The only thing better than FLD being on five days a week is leo on more than once!

  • I love drive

  • i heard "they are fantastic handling beagles as they are"

  • Very good channel. I hope more videos like this

  • Now this is what we want on drive! :)

  • Thanks Leo!

  • fiesta st rocks!!!!

  • Loving the new show!

  • pretty much what we can draw from this is you have to have money behind you to start racing the normal kid has no chance

  • @goalsave1 I 'knew' some would take the HH comment wrong + miss his 'exposure' advice. In a future SD University we WILL address how to find sponsorship bucks to get racing. eg; Pat Long referenced scholarships + he spoke of how he chased those to find the early dollars. Pls don't think the 'normal kid' is f**k'ed. Racing IS a MoneyPit. But, talent matters + there are ways to race. Still, I'll never say racing ain't a real test of your comintment - at every step.

  • @LeoParente love shakedown btw i agree with you about the chasing down sponsorship and all that but im talking from the bottem with no history in racing. Where i am from in england the normal way into it is karting which is great although still costs lots for a season of racing. rally racing is another opportunity but again the costs involved in preping cars are large. i welcome any advice you offer in future shakedowns not to hate on the industry just the way i see it at the mo.

  • buying a new car to start racing ? sounds like a bad idea... there are plenty of late 80s through 90s compacts that with a few basic mods could keep up with the newer "performance" or "track oriented" models for a third or even a quarter of the price.

  • Great episode. Wondering what might be some good racings events or series for someone to start out in.

  • lucky sperm club lol

  • B-Spec Abarth 500? GIMME GIMME GIMME!

  • You dont have to start with a brand new car either... The way i see it, youre going to be spending plenty on upgrades and upkeep of the vehicle, buy something used and save yourself the unneccesary cost

  • just skip to 2:21, there was nothing worth listening to or watching beside Leo.

  • WOW

  • 1:20 Fantastic handling bagels

  • older cars like BMW E30/E36's and older Mazda Miata's are cheap and have spec racing series' of their own. could be a relatively cheap way to get started.

  • 4:01 to 5:07. That guy hit the nail on head talking about improving the driver before the car. I think its really easy for young guys to just say, all I need is a faster car to drive faster. I agree with the driver being interviewed, you have to improve the driver before you improve the car.

  • Lucky sperm club.. haha I love it.

  • nice.... you left out the subaru sti

  • @mstkenny04 Actually, even with a low-cost starter-car mentality, may have left out a few more. ShakeDowners, what other cars? eg; Nissan / Honda B-specs? ??

  • would love to see some more regional spec series, or at least group track racing. Would be fairly cheap by comparison and give drivers a way to compete and learn. i would buy into a regional group b style track racing.

  • FIESTA! I genuinely thought it was one of those Toyotas Aston Martin got their hands on aha.

  • great episode!

  • Start racing with a 3 series, or 135

  • Thanks Leo, that was a great show; you got this down like Al Capone with a Tommy-Gun.

  • If you want to start racing, and your want to start with FF Cars, there is no other/better choice, that going, a Peugeot GTi or Renault RS, the Megane RS trophy or club sport comes to mind

  • BWUAHAHAHAAAA, Leo damn near made me poop myself with, "Unless you've got a lot of money... or come from a lucky sperm club..."

  • Cool.

  • @leoparente Here's an idea for you. Run your own sim racing contest using iRacing or LFS (not simraceway please! it still too green!), and the prize would be a weekend or a day with Leo Parente on the track to take Shakedown University to reality.

Avoid using arcade games like GT5 or FM4 those are GAMES Shakedown U should be for more serious racers.

  • @vicbel Don't diss GT5 and FM4. They may not be as advanced as their PC counterparts, but they're damn good at what they do. They are sims, and using them (especially GT5) would reach a MUCH broader audience. Also, iRacing and LFS are games too. >.>

  • @trombonekingdom GT5 and FM4 would reach a much broader audience if they were available on PC!

  • @bottomlayer That's very true, but it'd never happen since Sony and Microsoft wouldn't allow it.

  • Where do we watch the Dubai GT3 race online?

  • @casefc3s youtube[dot]com/LIVE

  • Leo! Thank you for giving us a heads up on an upcoming race this weekend and where to catch it! You do listen!

  • Killer episode !!

  • i actually really liked this epi. Good info from the drivers and the "poor man's" race cars was a nice reminder of how accessible racing can be . WIsh i had more time/space to pick up a proper RWD six speed and work on my racing abilities. If i could shift with one arm i'd trade it to be a better racer :D

  • Sounds like fun, but still too much money! I'm surprised you didn't even plug your (free) SimRaceway!

  • another great show. Bet a lot of those drivers were shocked to have someone there asking questions!

Lots of great B-Spec cars out now to help get people involved in racing - Great stuff!

  • You guys are doing amazing segments! I'm a fan!

  • this is not a shakedown to me , shakedown involves arguing , prooving a point and some bullying !!

  • @mosh1111 Stay tuned. But, the key is to pick your moments. I haven't changed!

  • ill be there tomorrow, so excited!

  • Good job leo! nice episode.

But there is actually only one thing you need to - start - racing, money. All those tips are cool but motor-sports are the only kind of sport in the world that isn't motivation alone that gives you the will to start and get going.

    You need in this order:

passion for motor sports, Money (lots of it), Motivation, Skill

Name me 1 pro-race driver that din't have the money to start racing

    now for example Soccer:

    Ronaldinho: poor Brazilian family

    C.Ronaldo: poor family

  • Nice. Fueled me for whole day. That's what a real racing report should be.

  • well you can always buy ultra-used lower class race cars, they're cheap and usually come with a bucketload of spares but, even with continuos professional repairing, they are REALLY consumed (and complex) machines. For real racing sometimes monobrand cups are interesting lowbudgetwholepacket occasion, sometimes. I think that the really needed thing is the gentlemens driver race, like the touring, rallies in the 50' and the hillclimbs in 60 and 70, with a lot of categories everything were raceable

  • great marketing idea from Porsche to bring real race car drivers to get interest from real driving enthusiasts

  • A nice follow up feature would be to hear from brands that have recently added a motorsport program to their portfolio. It could cover many different disciplines and reasons as to why manufacturers chose the car and discipline they did. Perhaps a look at potential future racing ideas such as - Would Dodge take the new Dart into WTCC given the success of Chevrolet there and the history of the similarly sized (and distantly related) Alfa 155 had?

  • I came so hard during this episode

  • That was was one the best best shakedowns to date.

  • lol vagals....

  • sounds like the SVT guy is saying bagels no vehicles

  • Great job Leo!

  • WOW! The Europe dude, just siad the truth, that we make good cars better and more fun. The SRT just talk about some PR Bulshidoo and thinks that way he will sell me his cars....

  • @Eliano55 I didn't like the comparison between SRT and AMG. More like SVT and AMG. SRT is more about the old school, lots of power, make you smile on the highway feeling. Not flat out performance.

  • @100littlecurses You do know i was talking about 2 different things :) Considering everething, amg is more like SRT than SVT, or rather AMG is like SRT and SVT is like M-Division. Not exactly, but AMG Merc, were always about power and huge fenders etc. So yeah, that comparison is rather good.

  • @Eliano55 Ah, fair enough. But I still wouldn't call SRT "Bullshido". Like I said, I think its more old school feeling.

  • Leo you dumb fuck! pointing out some racecars to start with and forgetting the best! 911 cup cars can be bought second hand for reasonable prices and if you are from the lucky sperm a brand new rsr is the best choice. if you want to start racing, start karting(cost efficient) followed by low formulas or cup racing and then the world series!

  • @morty1988 i think everyone watching this is aware of the GT3.....he is pointing out cars that can be had for not alot, not alot to maintain. i wouldnt want to start racing in a scarily fast GT3 RSR. world series? .....you know you have gotten to the top when your in F1.

  • @thebossisheretostay like I said, start karting. And with world series, porsche supercup, you can do le mans as a privateer or go dakar! making it these days is a combination of funding and talent. Racing is and will be a richmans thing. Only trough karting at young ages(5 or 6) big talent you will get like vettel a sponsorship wich will take you to the highest level

  • My problem, as is for most people these days, is money. A year of serious karting can run into 5 figures all fees included. That is not an easy fee to swallow for those who are still in college. And that is the cheapest seat time out there.I find it kind of annoying that my best chance is GT Academy (got in the top 100 east coast). My question to Leo is how do you handle the money aspect of racing? How do you pay for a car? Get sponsors? etc? Even as a business major, these things puzzle me.

  • Why have Ford so obviously stolen their grill design from Aston Martin, they havnt even made an effort to change it

  • Informative: 3:00 that's good advice. Set a plan, and if it doesn't work, drop it. 4:25.and 4:44 I have always wondered if it was possible to work on your mental strength as a driver, now I know. Good job Leo.... 5 stars.

  • I'm looking at getting my first track car this summer. Right now I drive a 1997 eclipse but I can't race it because I commute everyday to school. I looked at miata's but eventually I decided on a good old Nissan 240sx with the KA24DE motor. I think for most late teens/ twenty-somthings it is better to have a good DD and a track car and not to combine them into the same car.

  • I Built my own Focus STR on Forza 4. It has a Shelby GT500 V8 Engine, 4WD, weighs 2000 pounds and is dressed up to look like an Aston Martin DBR9 Race car! Its so fast I did a 1 minute 18 second lap time of Top Gear's test track in it! Really a great car because it will out accelerate all other R3 cars in the game! It has some cornering flaws but its a challenge to drive, which makes it more fun! It is nice to see Ford is thinking along the same lines, although probably not as radically.

  • Drive.... you son of a bitch. Great job :D

  • Ralph Gilles flew down from Detroit to North Carolina for half a day to be my HPDE instructor when my original one couldn't make it. Awesome guy in person to meet.

  • 1:18 great handling bagels

  • @jinjino98 You people are meaaannnn! Had to go play the vid to see WTF. But IMO, accents make motorsport people sound more expert. Well, then there's Kimi...... [kidding].

  • !:18 great handling bagels

  • yeah rucking right old hondas mazda's evos and sti's are what is what we look for.

  • im in love with drive!!! good job

  • In my opinion the 350Z, Mazda Roadster, 370Z (if you can afford it) or a Acrua RSX, civic Si, Dodge SRT4, and Mitsubishi EVO (all generations introduced in America) are the best starter cars for racing

  • Ralph Gilles is an awesome guy, he's so active in the brand and most importantly he's a real enthusiast, not just some suit that operates behind the scenes.
