@bad74maverick1 Elevator trim tab broke away, it's speculated that the remaining tab linkage rod jammed the elevator into upward deflection and thus was being blocked from going back to neutral. The result, combined with a turn, was a wide corkscrew into the ground. Resulting G forces compressed the pilot into seat, unable to control the aircraft. NTSB report WPR11MA454 says the plane was "substantially damaged"...more like vaporized. Understatement of the year.

I am the air race announcer at Reno. My partner for the jet and unlimited class is Steve Stavrakakis. The air SHOW announcer is Danny Clisham. After the accident we worked as a team until I became too weak to continue. (I had major cancer surgery just a month earlier.)

I am the person who filmed this unfortunate shot. I was sitting in section Erow 10 seat 36. I am filming a documentary called "Vintage Racing Today" It is about Vintage car racing, and I thought this air racing would be a great extra on the DVD. If he was in such good heath then why did he not have a first class medical. A third class medical is very easy to get. You don't need an EKG and any problems are up to you to tell the doctor. All those old pilots never want to admit their time is done flying or racing. They should require a 1st class medical just like airline pilots every 6 months or one within a month of the race, plus G testing at NASA to see how many Gs they can take before they pass out.
You're an idiot if you think mondifications had nothing to do with the elevator trim tab coming off. They also cut down the width of the whole horizontal stab. That reduces the size of the elevator too. Sorry, you don't have the brains to be any kind of engineer or machanic.
Original p51s had an armor plate right behind the pilot seat with radio equipment in the space behind that. The racing mods would have all of that equipment removed to save weight. I'll wager the seat was replaced or modded to save weight as well. The seat had a to have broken for him to disappear from view. Also the canopy was low profile.
@jtp0321 that is one of the latest theorys, note the side view , with no pilot visible, maybe he did pitchup from the failing trim, bet he felt a little flutter from that. the G out may have busted the seat mount.....
there have been two other runaway trim incidents. one in 1994 and one in 2005 i believe it was voodoo in 2005 or whatever. both were p51s. in both occasions pilots said the G loads were tremendous the one in 1994 the pilot commented he passed out and woke up in the vertical climb. Voodoo said he only regained control after he lost speed in the vertical climb. Good health or not your can only be so strong at 74, the amount of strength needed to control was beyond jimmy's reach.

The guy died inside the plane, as you can see in some pictures there was noone in the cockpit, which means that the guy had either passed out or died above, i suspect that he died. They shouldn't allow anyone of age 60+ to drive an aeroplane, in some countries they prevent 60+ people to drive cars!! so how can they let them drive aeroplanes.
The truly sad thing is, if he didn't shorten the wing span or tail span. To make it go faster, he would of had enough lift to clear the people and do a belly landing on runway. P-51 were an excellent combat plane, from what I understand from flying them on my PS4 they were designed to easily pull out of situations like this.

Sad. The Reno races have had a great record. That stuff happens though. I'm just really surprised that more people didn't die. Watching this footage would make me think that 30+ people would have been directly hit. This is no reason to stop the races as some have mentioned. There is risk in everything and if we let regulations rule our lives we'll be wearing bubble wrap soon.
@dcpostal there's a difference between rolling around in bubble wrap and being safe. There's absolutely no reason the planes aren't racing further into the desert away from the crowd. It wouldn't reduce the visibility of the planes all that much more and would greatly reduce things like this happening. Then again people jump out of planes and bungee jump. I prefer to live a long life.

to Beeroosterm, I am sorry that my comments have upset you. I would pray for peace and healing on the families involved in this accident. I do believe in GOD. I do not think GOD caused this accident. I am struggling with the fact that it is just dumb luck that the plane did not hit me, and that it hit other people instead. This knowledge is hard to wrestle with. What am I to do with this knowledge? I am going to try to treat every day as a gift, and treat people with respect and dignity.

I have read that the trim tab failed. Is that the official discovery? I would like to know who did the inspection and who approved the inspection for this plane to fly? Is there special testing for this kind of airplane? Do all airplanes like this one use the same kind of trim tabs or do they all fabricate their own? Turning those huge props creates so much torque... I am just wondering why the trim tab failed.

I am the air race announcer at Reno. My partner for the jet and unlimited class is Steve Stavrakakis. The air SHOW announcer is Danny Clisham. After the accident we worked as a team until I became too weak to continue. (I had major cancer surgery just a month earlier.)
I wear a boom mike so my hands are free. I knocked down Steve's girlfriend; Immediately after the crash you can hear me say, "Are you alright? Are you alright?"

I am the person who filmed this unfortunate shot. I was sitting in section Erow 10 seat 36. I am filming a documentary called "Vintage Racing Today" It is about Vintage car racing, and I thought this air racing would be a great extra on the DVD. If he was in such good heath then why did he not have a first class medical. A third class medical is very easy to get. You don't need an EKG and any problems are up to you to tell the doctor. All those old pilots never want to admit their time is done flying or racing. They should require a 1st class medical just like airline pilots every 6 months or one within a month of the race, plus G testing at NASA to see how many Gs they can take before they pass out.

You're an idiot if you think mondifications had nothing to do with the elevator trim tab coming off. They also cut down the width of the whole horizontal stab. That reduces the size of the elevator too. Sorry, you don't have the brains to be any kind of engineer or machanic.

Original p51s had an armor plate right behind the pilot seat with radio equipment in the space behind that. The racing mods would have all of that equipment removed to save weight. I'll wager the seat was replaced or modded to save weight as well. The seat had a to have broken for him to disappear from view. Also the canopy was low profile.

@jtp0321 that is one of the latest theorys, note the side view , with no pilot visible, maybe he did pitchup from the failing trim, bet he felt a little flutter from that. the G out may have busted the seat mount.....

there have been two other runaway trim incidents. one in 1994 and one in 2005 i believe it was voodoo in 2005 or whatever. both were p51s. in both occasions pilots said the G loads were tremendous the one in 1994 the pilot commented he passed out and woke up in the vertical climb. Voodoo said he only regained control after he lost speed in the vertical climb. Good health or not your can only be so strong at 74, the amount of strength needed to control was beyond jimmy's reach.

Sounds like issues with pilot, issues with plane and its reliability after over-modifications were applied.
Call now for some sort of regulations to be put in place. That needs to be the legacy of the people who died in this tragedy.

The guy died inside the plane, as you can see in some pictures there was noone in the cockpit, which means that the guy had either passed out or died above, i suspect that he died. They shouldn't allow anyone of age 60+ to drive an aeroplane, in some countries they prevent 60+ people to drive cars!! so how can they let them drive aeroplanes.

The truly sad thing is, if he didn't shorten the wing span or tail span. To make it go faster, he would of had enough lift to clear the people and do a belly landing on runway. P-51 were an excellent combat plane, from what I understand from flying them on my PS4 they were designed to easily pull out of situations like this.

Sad. The Reno races have had a great record. That stuff happens though. I'm just really surprised that more people didn't die. Watching this footage would make me think that 30+ people would have been directly hit. This is no reason to stop the races as some have mentioned. There is risk in everything and if we let regulations rule our lives we'll be wearing bubble wrap soon.

@dcpostal there's a difference between rolling around in bubble wrap and being safe. There's absolutely no reason the planes aren't racing further into the desert away from the crowd. It wouldn't reduce the visibility of the planes all that much more and would greatly reduce things like this happening. Then again people jump out of planes and bungee jump. I prefer to live a long life.
