I much prefer Plato's definition: "Civilization is the triumph of persuasion over force" ... (why Ghandi, when asked what he thought of western civilization famously replied "that would be a good idea"). And that IS a civilization worth aiming for...
I generally like Jensen's ideas and find them accurate but....his comment on here that animals inherently know about the prey/predator relationship is bullshit. He stated one creature knows he can't eat all the newts in this pond or he'll die....wtf?
History is thick with animals doing just that and then....their numbers fall until the balance is restored.
Mr. Jensen is quite ignorant of science and technology. In all these videos he never talks about hydroponic production of food which is much more effective than cultivating on the soil. With hydroponics all poor people can have food. He also never talks about compulsory population control. Finally he believes that climate change is caused by human activities and we all know that it is a big lie. I feel pity for this guy, he seems to be very unhappy.
@acuaman42 You didn't see the entire vid. That's fine, but you can't comment on what you don't know. Well, you can, but it's intellectually rather unimpressive.
@MilesD3 You are wrong, I saw the 7 videos and Mr. Jensen never talks about all the technical options for food production in poor countries. It is clear that he does not have technical knowledge on that. In China, most farmers are changing to hydroponic production and they are doing quite well. Even NASA is experimenting with AEROPONIC production. Mr. Jensen should read more before he talks all that nonsense.
@acuaman42 Please refer to Jensen's definition of "civilization", "city", and "sustainability". What you are proposing is an essentially unsustainable option. Jensen addresses this in detail, and dismisses any technofix on the basis of very clear arguments, none of which you appear to be aware of.
@MilesD3 I suggest you see Prof. Michio Kaku video in which he explains the different kinds of civilizations, from zero, which is where we are to level 4. In order to reach level 1 from level zero, we need to advance in science and technology, we can not get back to what Mr. Jensen wants. Fortunately most humans want science and technology development.
@acuaman42 Technofix. Unsustainable. As said: You didn't see the entire vid. That's fine, but you can't comment on what you don't know. Well, you can, but it's intellectually rather unimpressive.
@acuaman42 I repeat, probably in vain: Jensen addresses this in detail, and dismisses any technofix on the basis of very clear arguments, none of which you appear to be aware of.
Part II: Your book was published on paper. You, therefore are part of the problem. Gandhi walked his talk. You only talk. I might fundamentally agree with the need for change. But all you do is piss on culture. You dont walk your talk. If you did, you wouldnt need to Bash other people, You Fail
@pavanatanaya You didn't see the entire vid. That's fine, but you can't comment on what you don't know. Well, you can, but it's intellectually rather unimpressive.
Mr Jensen, It sounds as though your developement stalled at about the Jr. High School level. Nihilist much? In your book, Endgame Resistance, you shit all over Mohandas Gandhi. Really? I suppose anyone could make a moral judgement on anyone, absent that person's defense. Mohandas Gandhi was Bramacharya. Did you know that? If you did, shame on you for exploiting his observation. If you didn't, you are irresponsible for publishing your poison.
i think his basic premise derives from a commonly misconceived view of how cities (civilization) evolved. that views goes something like this: first, there was agriculture, then there was villages, then finally cities, and voila we had civilization. needless to say this is a racist view made popular by the apologists for industrial capitalism that wanted to retroactively idolize their own operations. a contrasting story would begin with religion, harmony with the land, Japanese, Arabs or Abos
People like Mr. Jensen should be the ones we elect to operate our society...you know, someone who actually cares about the fate of humanity and is therefore able to be trusted...REVOLUTION ANYONE???
@neokuji Is the star wars talk for example really that important? I didn't skip any of the premises nor the core of the message. If people want to watch the whole thing, they can easily find it on Google. Most people don't even know this talk exists. Also, my editing largely reduced the time needed to understand everything. Not all people have infinite hours to watch everything. If it makes you happy, I'll post some links in the description to the full version.. Geez..
First off lemme say I probably support pretty much EVERYTHING people who subscribe to this philosophy do as long as it doesnt actively kill people. (sabotage and so on) after all we live in a genocidal, ecocidal system, no question about it.
But where does this guy get off believing that he is all knowing enough to say no civilzation is sustainable?? That is utter opinion. How does he know there is no such thing as sustainable energy?? im an anarchist but cmon there is no way he can know that

What I did was esoterically evolve - which means I'm immortal - and so I don't care about humans or this planet.

I love Derrick Jensen; he delivers his [potent] message in a pragmatic and cogent manner with his wry sense of humor injected in.

@pavanatanaya I disagree. His books are very informative and influential. Criticizing is often the first step towards real change.

@ antilli
while you may feel that some parts were irrelevant to you and the need to strip down Derrick's talk, we don't appreciate your editing or censorship!
For those who would like to see the original (unedited) version, its available on torrent, and on google video (in 2 parts)!

@wda013 I added the playlist to the description. This was recorded in 2006, not sure where exactly.
