  • Great tutorial! Thanks for putting in the time! I cannot believe how many people read off of their slides! I really like how you said exactly what I was thinking: like I'm some idiot that can't read the slide myself! :)

  • Thanks for the tutorial!

I got a few great ideas from it...

  • Great work , man.

  • i have to create a powerpoint presentation for class. not sure what to do it on yet but when i find out what i'm going to do it on,i know what not to do. thx. keep em' comin

  • I am starting a job on monday where they told me they create a calendar for the Residents (it's an Assisted Living Facility) -- so they can check the calendar and see what is going on on each day for the month. first they print it out on 11x17 paper and then they project it onto a flat screen on the wall so that all the Residents can go to the flat screen and look and see what is happening. I do not have PP on my computer and am trying to learn this from watching tutorials on YouTube. Help?

  • If you have internet access, you can create a slide deck with something like Google Presentations. Another option is to download Open Office which is free and has a presentation application.

I would suggest posting single screens for each event rather than a copy of a calendar. They likely wouldn't be able to read it anyway.

  • Its very good, full of wonderful information.. but I think that if you got to the "point" and after 8mins.. omg.. I am sleepy.. I will make it through it because I think it will be worth it.. *Yawns*

  • Very nice movie. some very good tips about how to use PowerPoint, or how not to use it...

  • I disagree with deelybob. I thought Dean's speaking skills were pretty good... very "conversational." I also learned a lot from his presentation. Thank you, Dean, for sharing this. I will check out your website.

  • in a word....pontificate.

  • Nice tutorial! Should be required viewing for a powerpoint user.

  • thanks!

  • Excellent information. I learned more from this videp thank from what I have read so far. Experience is a key factor to teach. Thank you for sharing this valuable resource.

  • Thanks so much for putting up this video. I have been teaching and now I know why my students can't last for over an hour. I got so much to improve now. Take care.

  • just wondering, how did you become a powerpoint expert?

  • how did u get a 20 minute video onto youtube? max 10 minutes right?

  • How did you make this video? I want to put a video lecture together with a powerpoint presentation and put it out in various video formats. What software did you use? I really enjoyed your presentation.

  • I used Camtasia Studio.

  • Your video is an excellent example of how even a good PowerPoint presentation can't make up for speaking skills. I am not trying to be rude but I could not make it past 5 minutes because your speaking style wanders so much and is frankly rather boring.

When talking about a specific idea you are to the point and very lively, but in between there are lots of "ums" and it doesn't seem that you actually thought out this presentation. Great slides aside, you are back to a deadly boring lecture.

  • Thanks deelybob,

I agree, I could have done better with the speaking portion. I created it in more of a hurry than I should have. I think I've gotten better at this but the "ums" and other speaking faux pas in this presentation could have been cleaned up.

Even the content, while I think isn't quite as disjointed as you describe could have been tighter.

    I'm always learning.

  • Eh, I disagree with deelybob. I thought you had pretty good speaking skills.

  • Thank you for all tips and warnings, it has been helpful for a person like myself as a beginner in Powerpoint usage.

  • Thats really great, but one thing though...

I dont think you can put extreme and powerpoint in the same sentence.

  • THANKS!

  • Great video.

I disagree with the "no using templates" idea, as I make my own which is very minimal and basic so attention is kept. However, my school is full of students who just throw animation and sounds in their presentations EVERYWHERE. So I'm totally against animations and transitions. Thanks :D

  • I must ask where you got a lot of your information. It seems that your work on this presentation took a lot of liberties with other people's work. In particular, right at the very beginning I noticed a very significant parallel with "Five ways to reduce

PowerPoint overload" by Cliff Atkinson and Richard E. Mayer.

I'd love to see your bibliography, especially when it seems that you take images and ideas right from other people's work.

  • Obviously this is a mash up of various people including Atkinson, Lessig and Godin. This is clearly stated at the end of the video. While I do not clearly list sources and perhaps I should have, there is little in the way of standardization in terms of attribution.

Since 2006 I have become better at citing sources in this new age of copyright and mashups. Clearly it's within the bounds of acceptable use and I do attribute sources, albeit not in traditional formats.

  • 5 stars. excellent

  • Thank you for taking the time to constructively point out why I have always made fun of powerpoint presentations!!!! I am a graduate student preparing to teach my first class next semester so your sound, well presented tutorial is very much appreciated. I am passing it along to my classmates so that we can all avoid those horrible pitfalls.

  • Excellent vid. Your vid is an excellent resource and an absolute tribute to the educational qualities of youtube (although few and far between)

  • Good advice and great presentation buddy. You are doing the lord's work sir. KUTGW!

  • Excellent! Great Instructions... I'm making some applications now! Thank you for bringing this to us. I appreciated the "Tell A Story" reminder when creating slides. Grateful!

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to make this great video on presentation skills. I have looked at many videos on YouTube and yours really kept my interest. For sometime now I have been wanting to get away from bullet points and now I know how to do it. I will also be checking the resources you mentioned. Thanks again!

  • Thank you for teaching me all this i knew alot of it but i learned alot also

  • i tried putting my powerpoint on youtube but it says failed (invalent format)

  • You can't upload PPT to youtube. You must convert it to a video format. Usually it requires a paid program. I used Camtasia to place video over my PPT and saved it in a video format.

  • I just save all my slides as picture files and insert them into a movie maker presentation... nice tips...

  • Very useful.

    thanks a lot.

  • Stick with it, it's got some excellent suggestions and ideas

  • Why do you say aghains for against?

  • this would be very helpful in class because of the examples given.

  • how do u get a powerpoint on youtube

  • u can use a screen recorder such as camstudio (which is free) or a powerpoint recored but these are often expensive

  • LOL! I hate the templates!

  • some kids love power point i know some one who like LOVE IT LIKE REALLY LOVE IT!

  • Thanks. Great tips. I´ve also found great presentations at slideshare - and probably Mr. Shareki may share a powerpoint about effective ppt presentations. Regards.

  • How do i download powerpoint? i could only download the veiwer and i cant create powerpoint presentations myself, i can only watch presentations that ppl have already made

  • You have to buy PPT, or use any number of online presentation tools. Open Office is also an option..free and allows you to create presentations and save as .ppt files.

  • u hav no idea how useful this infos. for me...thanks..to the nth degree>>>u

  • it helps me a lot!!!

    thx for posting!!! lol

  • this will help me on my powerpoint!

  • I don't know about you guys, but I didn't find this information new or radical in any way. Powerpoints have always come naturally to me, even for the first one I ever did. But then again, I'm more of a visual learner (apart from when I learn chemistry), so that might explain it.

But anyways, it's nice of you to help people out.

(For any doubtful Youtubers or newbies out there, I confirm that this guy's advice is pretty reliable.)

  • one way is to convert the slides to .jpg but choosing Save As and choosing .jpg. Now you have images and you can put them into any video editing program to create a video. In my example above, I used Camtasia studio that keeps all the transitions and animations. It's about $300. Havent' found many good free options for converting ppt to video.

  • how u do that?

  • yo i tried uploading power point but it wont let me? lol and also how many kb is in a mb? i seemed to hav forgoten

  • You can't upload ppt. It has to be in a video format like avi, mpeg, wmv or quicktime. You'll need to convert it first.

  • Where can i download power point from ???

  • the beginning is sooooooo boring

  • WoW! This is very nice..

i learned some stuff from a pro from the making of playstation 3 Home and i told me about this movie and this is great! many facts im going to remember.. 20 min was worth it!

  • For me it's not about giving into any monopoly, PPT is simply the most commonly used tool. The principles of good presenting apply no matter what the tool.

The problem with pdf is that it only allow for static slides. There are times when special effects, if used sparingly can be effective storytelling tools.

  • Thank you for a very useful video. I agree with all you say. One suggestion: I would suggest people look at other software for presentation. Could just be a PDF. Why give in to Microsoft's monopoly? ;-)

Also, there is KeyNote on the Mac, which I use. The templates are far better, and encourage small amounts of text.

  • Brilliant! Thanks for posting such an insightful and inspiring vid. I wish everybody watched it and stopped boring me with their bulleted slides...
