Thanks for the upload! This reminds me of the good days; when football was about football, not about wags, big sponsorship deals, Sky subscriptions, foreign imports, prawn sandwiches and billionaires! Luton had some brilliant players back then, such as Mick Harford, Brian Stein, Ricky Hill, and Steve Foster etc... I remember watching this game, after finishing my paper round! I was about 12 years old. Good memories, RIP Ray Harford!
i just looked through my old vids that i turned into mp4s and there were the 2 luton finals in their entirity - i have just watched the second half again - absolute gold. the adverts are funny as well - a guy with the biggest mobile car phone you have seen in your life and a vauxhall for less than 9 grand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanx for the memories this vid has provoked. I was at wembley that day - and it was the most amazing second half in history. I went down to the local pub - the chequers in westoning - a couple of days after the match and andy dibble was there - and i was able to relive some of those magic moments with him. later that week i wasin the bookies in flitwick and there was brian stein - again i was able to chat about the game (my own private post match interviews - unbelievable!!!
What memories!! RIP David Preece, Ray Harford and the great David Rocastle. I was 7 years old and watched the match in my full Luton strip then went out and played in the garden re-enacting the game.
Saw Nigel Winterburn in my local Tesco about 6 months ago and had to restrain myself from hugging him. Who the hell let him take that penalty?.....and why is he playing at Right Back?
I was there as a Luton fan. Bit of trouble during the match as Arsenal fans had come into the Luton area. Still have the hatters gorilla , it still works !
I dont support either these sides, but i remember watching this final as a kid, was totally shocked when Stein backed that late late winner!!!!!Really great game, and nobody gave Luton a hope before the final.
as a complete neutral, I can't help but feel the FA had more glamour and importance back then. It was a essential Saturday viewing unlike now. It was a cracking game this...
I remember the BBC Evening News reporting that night saying this match to be the greatest cup final ever. It was a superb match filled with exciting counter attacking football from both sides.
I remember the BBC Evening News reporting that night saying this match to be the greatest cup final ever. It was a superb match filled with exciting counter attacking football from both sides.
Its great to see Mick Harford celebrating next to Ray Harford in the dug-out when the third goal goes in. Little did he know that he would be celebrating in a similar vein in almost the exact same spot 21 years later.
Oh and RIP Preece & Harford.... Luton legends who will never be forgotten
I wonder what Wenger would think of Arsenal's set piece drill for the first goal. "You pass it to me and I'll just chip it into the mixer and we'll see if we can get a scrap". How times have changed.
I remember this Final. a real upset. There was a funny 3 year sequence in the finals then.
Arsenal won in 87, lost in 88 to Luton. Luton reached the 89 Final and lost to Forest. Forest also reached a successive Final in 90, but unlike the other 2, they retained the trophy.
luton got deducted 30 points at the beginning of the last campaign! btw... ur 35! i thought you might have been 15 or so judging by that stupid comment! lol Why are you watching a luton video anyway James?
Great video. Amazing final. I was a trophy luton fan that season, spurs by birth and that was my first final at Wembley. Heresy to admit this ... but thought Arsenal team of that era was excellent ... as proved the following season. Sad that Ray Harford and Rocastle are no longer with us.
Classic vid of a classic final back in the day when cup finals like this meant something! Shame to see the fa have crippled a club like luton nowadays. Hope they bounce straight back. Your 40 thousand fans were a credit to your club and town last week at Wembley, congratulations! All the best!
Although Chesterfield need the win on monday i really hope its not us who put the final nail in your coffin and send you down. Your fans were fantastic at Saltergate when we beat you 1-0 to stay up. I hope you bounce straight back.
As a Watford fan, I simply hate Luton and wish they hadnt won that game. However, I think its sad that that couldnt happen today and clubs like Luton would never beat Arsenal in the League Cup fial.

Best day of my life ... the atmosphere at Wembley was unbelievable (the emotional roller coaster was unbearable - especially at 2-1 down then conceding the Penalty) ... no other sport can come close to soccer for drama, excitement and unpredictability. I am praying for a miracle this season as we try and stay in the league from a start of -30 points! Luton forever!
im an arsenal fan and i was at this game. mixed emotions after watching it again. i was distraught at the time - a perfect summers day and a great comeback, inspired by martin hayes all ruined by a missed pen and some awful defending by gus ceaser. it was a very long journey home!

There is a conspiracy against luton town fc by the fa. they do not want luton town to be in business. in 88 alot of the top boys in the fa lost big money in bets. brian stein never got picked for england because of same reason! hatred runs through the in the FA! look at 2:44 what a dive! everyone in the FA wants the hatters to go down the same as they did with wimbledon! First went to see Luton in 1986 & been a fan since, I remember this game like it was yesterday thanks for putting this up. Typical Arse dive for the penalty, great save from it. I have never seen this final, didn't watch as I assumed they were going to walk it, he didn't do a good job of lifting the trophy, was facing the wrong way.
Incidentally, i snogged Steve Foster's sister in Benidorm in 1993, and then bumped into her again in 1999 in London. Small world. I beleive her name is Emma.
This was one of the greatest games i had ever seen, i was 13 and a neutral. these were the days when finals really were classics, these days theyre just too technically coy and defensive, cos if the game is lost you lose a billion pounds. back then all you lost was pride...
ashely grimes he was so slow but he ran straight past him how gd is tht i was at leyton orient and if we had some1 like brian stein 2 nok it into da net we would of won
Dame I bet Luton Fans must be pissed that they team had such greats but now they waste team how sad. Lets nt 4get Liverpool have won the league cup more than any1.
Who says that nobody used to dive?! Rocastle left is leg behind and dived like a salmon there...!!
Teriffic game though. All of the ingredients necessary with a penalty save, 2 comebacks and a last-minute winner. Thanks for putting this up, haven't seen it for ages.
I can remember being really upset sitting there in my Arsenal kit at Wembley with my Dad. We beat Liverpool the year before as underdogs and were expected to smash Luton in this game! Good luck to them. Poor old Gus had a nightmare at the back. I cant believe only a year later we became Champions! I think this defeat helped put the iron in the team to win the title at Anfield the year after!
I sat on the terraces NUMB for an hour afterwards, still cant believe we lost that game, fair play to Luton thou',they stuck in there and came out on top..RIP Rocky,Ray Brian and David.
Great memories. Remember kissing some girl when the equaliser went in, and then some big guy planted a smacker on me when Stein scored the winner. Sad so many involved have gone.
I'm a die hard old oak roader....but now living in Buenos Aires. This clip is magic, I was shouting in my room even though I know what is going to happen. I saw Boca Juniors play last week - we would have given them a good game!
I was born in Luton, as well as my dad, he tells me the stories of him and the games hes went to with luton, but we are both liverpool fans, but we never forget our roots, and i love luton, but im ready for them to be promoted to the premiership, but the thing is, theyre too strong for league 1, not strong enough for premier league
four of my mates were Arsenal fans, I remember on the day how they laughed at me, so confident they were going to win, we went to wembley our seperate ways on the day, I remember so well when they were awarded the penalty (I still reckon he dived by the way)thinking Thats it,we have lost now, gotto face the lads later, even after that I still did not hink we would win, when the winner came it was total joy
Damn it, we were bloody good then. Great memories. :)

Nice dive from Rocastle there! Good on Andy Dibble I say.

That was a foul on the Arsenal defender, that would be a red card for the Luton striker in todays football !
