I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but the reasoning is that the positive impact Al Gore can have on the environment by speaking in person to thousands of people (who each individually go and save energy/recycle etc.) is significantly greater than the negative impact of flying around in his jet. The time wasted driving or taking a train would mean fewer people hear his speeches, and it wouldn't save much to take a commercial airliner since his jet is generally filled with all his support staff.
