This song is epically iconic. It defined a generation of RPGs and set the bar for video game music so high, few games since have ever come near it's nostalgic catchiness.
I love the opening song.I sitting very very very lot´s of hours on my Dad´s Pc to play this game.I think till today monkey island 1 and 2 are the best adventeures ever made.Only Day of the Tentacle is better.
This is the first game I ever played and still one of my favorites, along with lots of other Lucas arts adventure games. Every time I hear the music I always want to play it again
The funniest game ever, and it has a great story too, plus great puzzles. Land's music is also great.
I really wish Hollywood would stop making video game movies (video games don't really make good movies) but I would give a chance to a film about Monkey Island.
well... have you watched pirates of the caribbean? I think it has taken a lot of inspiration from Monkey Island. A lot. Watch it again, maybe only the first half an hour or something, and you'll see what i mean.
Yes, I have watched the first Pirates of the Caribbean. It was not great, but it was not bad either, it was OK. And yes, it is obvious that they have taken inspiration from Monkey Island. But Monkey Island would be a lot funnier than POTC. I'd like to see it happen some day.
i've heard a lot of rumours that the first pirates of the caribbean movie was based on a reworked script that was originally written as a monkey island adaptation.
just a rumour of course, but it's plausible and gives credence to your theory.
It's sad, isn't it? The thing is, I think most video game premises would also make good movies, if only the right people were working on them, but they almost never are. Directors who make movies based on video games, television shows, comic books, regular books, and even other movies tend to be arrogant and self-absorbed, trying to express "their vision," or appeal to "a demographic" instead of pleasing the fans, and the movie suffers for it.
True, appearing to a broad demographic brings nothing but trouble.
However, I feel that some video game movies try to be TOO faithful to the source material. The Super Mario Bros.-movie was just bad because it poorly tried to combine live action movie and the cartoon world of Mario.
Not to mention that most video games (besides adventure games like this and possibly Mass Effect) have generally horrible stories.
I'd love to be able to argue with you about that, since I can think of a good ten or twenty games that have magnificent storylines, even outside of adventure games, but the truth is, when compared to how many hundreds of video games actually exist, that's really not very many. Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Kingdom Hearts, Warcraft and Starcraft just can't make up for all the Marios and Kirbies out there.
This could be a good topic of discussion. Too bad YouTube isn't really a good place for that...
All those games you mentioned are pretty solid when it comes to gameplay, but I don't think the stories are too magnificent. Zelda's stories are usually the same "rescue the princess/defeat the bad guy"-stuff, and Metroid's story is interesting but a little too straightforward and uneventful.
Combining good gameplay and good story is hard, but Half-Life was quite succesful.
It may depend on what you want out of a story. If you want a story that has a lot of doubt, twists and exposed falsehoods, then yes. There are games for that. Some people, however, think that a story being straightforward and honest is a good thing, rather than a bad one. Star Wars, for example. The good guys and bad guys weren't really in doubt, and the difference between right and wrong was simple. Was it a bad story?
Actually, I agree that sometimes it's best to have a simple story, but usually, the games have a simple story in the wrong way. You mentioned Star Wars, and it has a fantastic story. But while it's simple, it also has a quite complicated background mythology/story to it, which is also a reason why I like it.
Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Splinter Cell and some others have generally bad stories because they are just too melodramatic and have too much twists and turns.
Exactly. If a story has too much baggage, too much angst, and tries too hard to be complicated, the story quality can easily suffer. One of the reasons why I preferred Kingdom Hearts (the first one, anyway) over any given Final Fantasy game.
i think it's really that the wrong games get movies made about them. street fighter and dead or alive do not need movies. there's no way you can make those stories comprehensible on film.
any video game world that has a lot of strong lore can work. take halo or warcraft for ex. that kind of expansive property would give filmmakers room to make up a story & characters within the game's universe instead of being forced to include characters or plot points that don't work on film.
Well, I don't know. I still think that plot points that work in games would mostly work in films as well, with the exception of games that only use them as collection sidequests.
The goal should be to bring out the action of the video game, and the motivations of the characters, rather than trying to take gaming cliches and make them seem cool.
P.S.: You're right. Street Fighter doesn't need another movie. There was an anime one already, and it was awesome.
well i never prefered a pirat sourounding but damn monkey island is damn good and one piece as well... i like pirates and didn't know or these 2 are really masterpieces ^^
Personally, I think the Amiga music sounded a bit nicer, but then again that's the one I've played a billion times, so it's that version of the music stuck in my head.
Just watched a lot fo your other vids as well. Keep it up! :)
This series definitely was one of my favorites. It will be one that even with the new games, it will be one that I will always remember because it was simple and had that classic Tim Schafer humor. This game and series is among my favorites of all time.
If they somehow put this on XBLA, i would be willing to pay lot of money for it.
LucasArts was the shizzle! I loved all the games, especially the Monkey Island series. There's a guy who put together a school play based on this one, who also plays the part of LeChuck. I highly suggest giving it a watch here on the Tube.
I played this game for a bit. I managed to get to the part where he gets knocked unconscious by the concoction. I couldn't figure out how to save the game though.
He's the co-writer of this game, but the MI franchise is considered more of a Ron Gilbert creation. Schafer's real solo efforts are games like DoTT, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, all of which fucking rock in my book.
Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer. The billion dollar duo. (It may not be the profit they generated but it's what they deserve IMO.)

loved all the monkey island games. I also found a neat trick. On a whim, I put the CD for the third game in my CD player, and it actually worked!

I agree on every count. My favorite game of all time is Schafer's DOTT, but this entire series ranks right up there.
Since Sam & Max has been ported to Wii, it'd be pretty cool to see a compilation disc with all the MI games on them. I'd buy it.
