Only the paint is CG. Real buckets were mounted on moving rods so that the falling, tumbling motion could be tweaked and repeated. A compositor/roto artist removed the green rods from the plate.
Oh, cool, I didn't know this in a movie. I couldn't see what those green things were. Were those turning real paint containers? At first I assumed those were CG also.

@zimtower Render time was fast since its just a few meshes, not volumetrics. It took 3 days start to finish.

Viscous liquid at this scale, is about the easiest thing for RealFlow to handle.
