  • Eat your heart out Mills Brothers

  • I don't agree, this version is good but no one touches The Mills Brothers. I'm glad I got to hear it for the first time, though. When the Country band I'm in does this song, the leader (who's been singing it forever) always says that he loves The Mills Brothers version and when his friend Hank Thompson recorded it on an album, it inspired him to do his own version. The leader's name is John Penny and he worked with Hank many times.

  • Does John Penny know Pee Wee Whitewing?

  • I've never heard John mention that name but I will certainly ask him. John's band would back Hank when he would play shows in the Northeast. At the time, John was the #1 Country agent in New England and booked many national Country stars. Before my time, I've only worked for John for 2 years and am half his age. I noticed that you have posted some Freddie Hart hits also. Our bass player, Glen Brodeur, was Freddie's bass player in the Heartbeats for 10 years during his hitmaking time in the 70's.

  • Pee Wee Whitewing played steel guitar for Hank for 10 years. The last session Pee Wee did with Hank was A Six Pack to Go (1960).

  • In that case, I doubt John knew Pee Wee. John started his band in the late 1960's and did most of his booking and backing in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

  • I used to work for John Penny. John had the best band in all the Northeast, as far as traveling country artists were concerned. When any of them reached the point where they couldn't afford to carry a band, and they came anywhere in NE, they would hire John's band. Because they are very professional & can back anyone. In that era, he probably backed them all. F Hart, Hank T, Freddy F and a whole lot more. It was a wonderful time!

  • This is one of his that I think should have

got more play than it did. 5*****
