Have you considered using the tilt/accelerometers for alternate controls? The only problem with the touch screen is that you implicitly obfuscate your avatar by touching it...
So unless you make a bigger avatar (bigger than your thumb) or some other way to visually confirm the position, it interrupts the feedback quite a lot. Still. I'm sure you've already thought of this and just didn't want to mess with a classic :)
