So, I saw it you did it in Flash, I think? How did you get to do the pen pressure there?
@ronna15 Flash has pen tablet support. You can turn on and off pen pressure at the bottom of the tool panel, provided you have the tablet driver installed as well. I know it works with Wacom, but I haven't tried any others.
I've always seen the dance like this: its a long distance relationship. he keeps dreaming of being with her and cant stop imagining her with him. but as he goes through the whole relationship its hurting him to be away from her and he loses his love for her. when shes finally there with him he realizes that he wasted his life wanting her and that he should have let go along time ago...

I saw your making of video, this is my favorite video in all youtube. Very interpretive good feelings. What software did you use? and what did you study in college/university? i am going into graphic design then into animation. Any advice?

I'm not sure if anyone saw/commented this before, but did you notice how in almost the entire movie, the woman doesn't have a shadow (like she's a memory), but the man does? In the end, it's the other way around...

As director of the feature documentary film And We Will Dance I was so thrilled to happen upon this beautiful short film. I was searching The Weepies and found this wonderful surprise. So moving and a perfect combination of music, dance and drawing/painting. Though my latest music video "Ocean Apart" I directed and filmed for The Bayonets does not have the same mood I still felt compelled to add my video response here. I love seeing other artists' work like this so I want to share in response.

Every time I feel doubt seep in about my dream of becoming an animator, I watch this. This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched; the level of skill.... to be called impressive is demeaning. I dream of becoming this great.
I view it like this: The man starts off alone. He meets this woman who constantly seems to evade him. Through the whole dance of their relationship, there is passion, but they're never truly together. She's not completely there. He gets tired of chasing her. Over the course of the romance he loses his willingness to be with her. He loses his solidity and he himself becomes the one that's not really there, just as she is ready to stop running. Very sad, very beautiful.
When you idolize and hold someone (anyone) up to be perfect, rather than seeing the beauty in the flaws of who they actually are, you truly are doing a disservice to that person.
I found this video, showed it to my girlfriend, we watched it about 500 times, we loved it, she broke up with me after 4 years, I cry every time I watch this video, and hear the song. But after a while I stop and I look at it, and it makes sense. It really is a double edged blade...
(2/2) Once he finally has his chance to be with the real version of the girl, he has poured to much of himself into the dream version of her. The real her will never be enough, because he spent himself on an idealized image. Now she is solid and he is a flimsy outline. They have switched roles.
(1/2) I love that every time the man and dream girl touch he loses more of himself to her. At the beginning he is fully shaded. At 0:48 his shading seems to trail behind him. At 0:56, when she appears in the flash of light, he is just lines. He rolls across the ground and seems to gather shading back up. As he holds her in the air from 1:17 on, his solidity starts flowing up into her. At 1:45, when he wakes up, it's back again, but once he is asleep he is just an outline again.

I absolutely love this animation. It is probably my favorite animation, and it brings tears to my eyes every time. I love reading the near-endless number of ways viewers interpret the story, and I keep coming back to re-watch and read some new perspectives.

@xoneverwantedme I see it as this. The real her couldn't live up to the expectations he had. He had imagined this perfect dream girl version of her, and that's how he saw her until he realized the actual girl wasn't as angelic or magical as he had made her out to be in his thoughts and dreams.
Actually, the point of the video is to be ambiguous. The creator says as much on his website. He wanted to make something that anyone could watch and interpret so that it was personal.
Two people missing each other. Boy wakes up over and over from his dreams of her. They meet in a dream world and love each other, but the girl wakes up in the end and realizes that he is still far away from her, and part of her dreams.
@moboinzion I saw this excellent animation on World design expo in Taiwan. The software used are Photoshop, After effect, Premiere( maybe there are more being used)
@moboinzion i would guess flash. i tried doing an animation like this in photoshop and it was really choppy. he probably threw it into after effects afterwards.
An absolutely beautiful animation, As an animation student I find it truly inspiring. It's remarkable how perfectly vague the story of animation is. Just as intended, every viewer creates their own interpretation, and, in essence, their own story for your drawings. It's much like a classical poem, always being re-interpreted as a different story.

the guy loves the girl, but she passed away or something happened to her and she's gone. He refuses to let go of her memory (he pulls her back down when she becomes an angel, for a specific example). At the end, he finally came to terms with it and had that final emotional "goodbye", after which he let go of her. Beautiful video with a beautiful story left open for interpretation. :)
This animation is absolutely entrancing. Its so pure and true, I get completely lost in it and although its just movement I feel like i really know what they are going through, i feel apart of their pain and happiness. this is truly beautiful.
My view on this video is that the Man is chasing after a girl who teasingly (?) runs from him. In the end, she wants him back, but by then the Man is tired of chasing after her and leaves.
Another thing I noticed is that the Man starts out by being shaded in and has black lines, while the girl is in white. In the end, the girl becomes shaded and dark-lined, but the man is no w only lines.
This is hands down my favorite video on youtube. It makes me appreciate the human form in motion like nothing else has, and no matter how many times I come back to it, it still inspires me, it still gives me goosebumps. There is a beauty here that transcends the individual parts that comprise this video.

I think this guy is a hopeless romantic. He always has these thoughts of the being with this perfect girl that he has created in his mind. He keeps wishing to have this perfect girl but he can't find her because he isn't going out to look for her. He later convinces himself he will never meet his perfect girl and loses faith (shadow disappear) but he will always have that perfect girl in his thoughts. When he finds everything he's looking for, he can't believe it's real. He lost out on true <3.

My first impression is that they're in a long-distance relationship, dreaming of each other. At the end, when the guy loses his shadow, that seems to me like we've switched to her perspective, to see that she's just as lost without him as he is without her - to show that she's not manipulating him, like a LOT of commenters seem to think. Yeesh. Also, that "virginity" comment is playing on the virgin/slut false dichotomy, which is hurtful to /everyone/.
Forget it, I'm not going to try and hide it... I cried... every time I watched this... I don't know how much longer I can chase him, until I too lose it; and leave him there on there ground.
I think the girl is a symbol of someone he knew and loved who left him in tears. He keeps thinking of her and all he wants to do is be with her again. As he feels the pain of loss he comes to the realization that he needs to let go because it's a hurt that needs to be healed. When she comes back to him he can't stand to lose her and experience the same ending a second time so he lets her go. I guess I look at it like that because the same thing happened to me and it still hurts :(

I see a doomed relationship. He has to keep chasing her to keep her with him, while all along she is draining him (taking his shadows). In the end he just has to let go because they're relationship is too destructive to him. On the other hand, the song by itself reminds me of losing a loved one. Because it's exactly how it feels, you think of them and how they've gone forever and for some reason the world keeps turning even though it feels like it should stop because they're gone.
I guess when I first saw this video I thought it was about death.The girl moved so ghost like and the man seemed so longing. The man lost his love and when someone else comes around in the end hes to weakened by the lose to be able to connect again.
Of course this is just my silly interpretation.In watching the documentary Mr. Woodward said he wanted it to be a different meaning for everyone. I'm enjoying reading peoples interpretations.
I know this video is much deeper than this, but the fist thing i thought after i saw it (after getting past how good the animation was of coarse and the choreography and yadda yadda yadda) I kind of saw it as plain and simple virginity.
The girl is white, pure, shining and mysterious. He wants to catch her but cant, and that only draws him more. But when she finally makes herself vulnerable, he takes that sparkling essence hed been chasing, and suddenly she isnt unique anymore.
@P0PPABURGUNDY That's an interesting interpretation, but it just doesn't sit right with me. A woman's virginity isn't what makes her unique or special. The best parts of her have little to do with her sexuality, in my opinion.

An absolutely beautiful animation, As an animation student I find it truly inspiring. It's remarkable how perfectly vague the story of animation is. Just as intended, every viewer creates their own interpretation, and, in essence, their own story for your drawings. It's much like a classical poem, always being re-interpreted as a different story.
I hope to make things like this some day. :)

I personally see it this way:
the guy loves the girl, but she passed away or something happened to her and she's gone. He refuses to let go of her memory (he pulls her back down when she becomes an angel, for a specific example). At the end, he finally came to terms with it and had that final emotional "goodbye", after which he let go of her. Beautiful video with a beautiful story left open for interpretation. :)

This animation is absolutely entrancing. Its so pure and true, I get completely lost in it and although its just movement I feel like i really know what they are going through, i feel apart of their pain and happiness. this is truly beautiful.

My view on this video is that the Man is chasing after a girl who teasingly (?) runs from him. In the end, she wants him back, but by then the Man is tired of chasing after her and leaves.
Another thing I noticed is that the Man starts out by being shaded in and has black lines, while the girl is in white. In the end, the girl becomes shaded and dark-lined, but the man is no w only lines.

This is hands down my favorite video on youtube. It makes me appreciate the human form in motion like nothing else has, and no matter how many times I come back to it, it still inspires me, it still gives me goosebumps. There is a beauty here that transcends the individual parts that comprise this video.

I think this guy is a hopeless romantic. He always has these thoughts of the being with this perfect girl that he has created in his mind. He keeps wishing to have this perfect girl but he can't find her because he isn't going out to look for her. He later convinces himself he will never meet his perfect girl and loses faith (shadow disappear) but he will always have that perfect girl in his thoughts. When he finds everything he's looking for, he can't believe it's real. He lost out on true <3.

My first impression is that they're in a long-distance relationship, dreaming of each other. At the end, when the guy loses his shadow, that seems to me like we've switched to her perspective, to see that she's just as lost without him as he is without her - to show that she's not manipulating him, like a LOT of commenters seem to think. Yeesh. Also, that "virginity" comment is playing on the virgin/slut false dichotomy, which is hurtful to /everyone/.

I think the girl is a symbol of someone he knew and loved who left him in tears. He keeps thinking of her and all he wants to do is be with her again. As he feels the pain of loss he comes to the realization that he needs to let go because it's a hurt that needs to be healed. When she comes back to him he can't stand to lose her and experience the same ending a second time so he lets her go. I guess I look at it like that because the same thing happened to me and it still hurts :(

I see a doomed relationship. He has to keep chasing her to keep her with him, while all along she is draining him (taking his shadows). In the end he just has to let go because they're relationship is too destructive to him. On the other hand, the song by itself reminds me of losing a loved one. Because it's exactly how it feels, you think of them and how they've gone forever and for some reason the world keeps turning even though it feels like it should stop because they're gone.

I guess when I first saw this video I thought it was about death.The girl moved so ghost like and the man seemed so longing. The man lost his love and when someone else comes around in the end hes to weakened by the lose to be able to connect again.
Of course this is just my silly interpretation.In watching the documentary Mr. Woodward said he wanted it to be a different meaning for everyone. I'm enjoying reading peoples interpretations.

I know this video is much deeper than this, but the fist thing i thought after i saw it (after getting past how good the animation was of coarse and the choreography and yadda yadda yadda) I kind of saw it as plain and simple virginity.
The girl is white, pure, shining and mysterious. He wants to catch her but cant, and that only draws him more. But when she finally makes herself vulnerable, he takes that sparkling essence hed been chasing, and suddenly she isnt unique anymore.

@P0PPABURGUNDY That's an interesting interpretation, but it just doesn't sit right with me. A woman's virginity isn't what makes her unique or special. The best parts of her have little to do with her sexuality, in my opinion.
