morrissey and the smiths are the only music i can listen to daily....I mean the music and lyrics feed you, can relate to, move you....poetry and harmony side by side and I really do think they are the best band EVER! :)
Been a fan of the Smiths for years but only discovered this recently after hearing it at the Smiths and Morrissey Disco (yes really, it exists) at the Star & Garter Pub in Manchester a few weeks ago. Great song.
@ashesinyourmouth Those were the first Smiths lyrics that really made me laugh. To this day it's hard to resist saying "I'm a backscrubber at the YWCA" when asked what my profession is. This song often plays in my head when filling out forms asking occupation. I wonder what that job pays? We have a YWCA here in Vancouver.
@ColdCutMolecules I appreciate your point but I actually find it harder to talk demotic than to spell out a coherent sentence. I'm not saying doing away with grammar is a sign of unintelligence, far from it, my girlfriend send me entire paragraphs of messages with barely any punctuation in because she is adroit enough to read such grammar.
Grammar makes a sentence easier to read rather than harder, I am quite sure of that.
the smiths lyrics are like the Tao or something. its short and simple but it can mean so much in different way and times of reading it. im pretty sure morresey was into classic literature though. he makes alot of Shakespeare refs and seems to be in the vein of the romantic period
I can not say this is my favorite smiths song, but I do love it.when it comes about the smiths, I have no predilections. all songs are great. he must had been mind reeling when he wrote all those great lyrics.
Morrissey é realmente um grande poeta do Rock! The Smiths uma grande banda do Indie Rock! Flores,Paz e amor!!! Feliz Ano Novo, 2010!!! De São Paulo/SP-Brasil.
@amtrotec2 OK...A backscrubber at a YWCA. Where do I sign up...? What man wouldn't want that job...? Even those men who don't find women sexually appealing generally find them beautiful. Again, where do I sign up...?
@khasperg It just means, if they do need a man, who can will scrub/massage alle the lady's backs in the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) just because he like to be with them.
@khasperg No, it means backscrubber (like in a shower or tub, because she was seeking 'employment')... YWCA... Get it? She was a lesbian. It's a joke (or was it? heh heh... I think she may have been serious)
This era of music was a time we(our generation) could feel what what being said with the depressed angst, painful, and sorrow filled feelings that were trying to be conveyed to us.We were confused, misled, with at times nowhere to turn but our music for not an answer but for understanding.I am thankful to have been a part of it.
The same song can mean something different to everyone, and it should. Trying to analyze it's exact definition keeps us from relating to it in our own personal way.
@hismastersvoice88 . I agree on a global scale we must all find our own truth, and if a piece of art is any good, it should resonate with its audience in personal, meaningful, and /or artistic/aesthetic ways. But I would also say, I writer/artist does intend something rather deliberate when he writes. It's not like it just falls out of the sky.
@suedehead420 But the idea that it has nothing to do with the artist and all to do with the listener/audience is completely accurate. The artist is the filter of the story/sculpture he renders. The product has no other choice but to reflect the biases, darknesses, light, concerns, etc and so forth of the creator. In that way the art's nothing but a transparency to the mind/philosophy/spirit of the artist. There's no way around that.
@1voceunica True...but to the artist, it is his version of reality......and as far as he's concerned, it applies to everyone. Maybe not in Morressey's case, but generally speaking.
@JDX000 I know what you mean, but that's what I like about it, It makes me feel a real genuine sadness, even though it's certainly not the story of my life and I have no idea what it's like to be a backscrubber.
I don't know why, but I think Kurt Cobain would have done a great cover of this song. I think it's because I've been listening to Nirvana's unplugged.
one of the best songs about being gay in the north of england in 70s....yes...amig...kurt, river, stipe...all your sad rich amrericans....i love em too,, but mozza most...
I love the fact that my speakers pick up the sound of thunder when they're on. The combination of the sound of thunder and this beautiful song (aren't all Smiths' songs beautiful?) is quite fitting.
I'm just wondering, living in Holland as you do, if you find Dr Frankenwhine's lyrics slightly easier to understand; as they have always seemed like double dutch to me........
