Regardless of interpretation I think this song is about being an outcast and about how most people never take time to think of others. It's awesome.

The National describes the feeling of "now", living in the 21st century, better than any other band I can think of.

@kidkidkid123 That is so true. A lot of other bands are just reinventions of 80's rock or some shit. The National is pretty freaking unique.
