she is beautiful and sings well. The problem according to me, is that she is singing a concertante version of electra. She sings only seeing ahead. what about the dramma, Berehns does so well?
This is astounding! That woman would be too much for me, but you would not hear me complaining! She could storm into a bar filled with outlaw bikers and send them all diving through the windows! Ouch, but I love her!
Needless to say, I am adding this to my "Favorites."
Some people here complain about the way she alters vowels but what Elekra doesn't? This music is high and VERY loud! There is no way you're going to understand every word during this monologue.
I like her voice (inaccurate vowels aside). I'm not excited about the staging and all the random peeps who pop in here and there. I'm glad to have had the chance to hear this monologue.
Elektra is one of my all-time favourites, and so I tend to be VERY critical indeed, but do you know, in spite of the rather (in places) odd production, this is probably my overall favourite. 10/10.
Great singer indeed. I only have one problem with this. The texting... I mean, she gets maximal sound out of every vowel. But she does so by altering them. She seems to be widening them all the time. For me it get´s a tad annoying.
I can understand wanting to modernize some operas where the plot is relatively timeless, like Don Giovanni for instance, but Elektra deals with characters from the Greek Epics of Homer. the story is more than 3,000 years old.
Producers like this must be bored by their own productions. And as for the conductor, I can imagine him having his players write "mezzoforte" everywhere not to cover up a weak and already strained singer …
Dreadful staging all right!! [So many of those stage-directors who love to depart from the traditional stagings, sets, etc., deserve to be shot at best!!!!] However, I must give credit to Eva Johansson in the title-rôle at least as far as her singing is concerned - at least this part is quite uncut!!! How was the rest of the production - were there any cuts?? If not, then I'd really be even more impressed!!!...
This is the most boring conducting I ever heard. How many players are in the pit? 30? Is the conductor still alive? And Johansson will never become a dramatic singer, not to mention her lack of acting skills. She never put an emphasis on a clear and correct pronounciation of the lyrics, and she doesn't here. So to me this is far from being a good performance.
I'm not sure I like these contemporary stagings which seem all the rage in Europe and probably don't cost much (for instance, there is no wardrobe dept. needed here.) Better the opulent, traditional productions of the Met.
Having never heard of Ms. Johansson, I am nevertheless very impressed upon hearing this. With all the screaminess associated with this role, her voice is refreshingly secure and unforced, with a dark, dusky timbre that is very appealing. And she can actually hit the high notes, which is more than can be said for many sopranos. Brava indeed!
What's with the guy in drag coming out of the door and cleaning the door knob at 2.15?? And Klytemnestra and Aegist (I am guessing it's them) walking across the set?? And the meaningless throng at the end?? Seems an unnecessary distraction. I want to focus on Elektra in her very first big scene, especially such a good one. Great singer - love her voice. Weird German vowels, though.
@bizou99: Good comments re. staging. What they COULD have done is to have had the shade of Agamemnon present - with his both being murdered, and later with his enemies, horses and dogs all being sacrificed, just as the text being sung calls for!!
As to Ms. Johansson: sometimes her vibrato becomes more of a wobble than I'd like or accept (it distorts the pitch - what a contrast with the late Birgit Nilsson, who was usually right on)!! Still, not bad although the conductor starts poorly...
this is not a question about needing or not needing elektra in a hoodie, i think it´s important to realize that art such as opera cannot only be the tutu-world with pomp and nice antique figures...
Well then acording to you She should do a break dance at the end of the Opera right ? Shes under a trash strewn freeway. wearing a hoodie. Shes not standing in front of her family house in ancient Mycene. And not dancing an dance that women in Mycene would do ? I don't see and Tutu in ancient Mycene .
Very impressive. There are a handful of Elektras on record that can truly sing the pitches Strauss put down. I feel as though she would have the requisite power for the big scenes throughout - truly exciting!!
Wow, what a huge and dramatic voice! All I knew with her was a very beautiful Eva from 10 or 15 years ago, I couldn't ever realize she'd become such a great voice for roles like Elektra. Her stage interpretation is also excellent. I guess she's one of the few sopranos of our days who knew how to build her career from the Evas and Elsas to the Elektras and Salomes slowly. The result is certainly very good.
this role must be hell on the voice. coloraturas stay away!
