Great soundtrack in this. I think Kinnock is sometimes unfairly underwritten. It could be argued he was a pioneer of the New Labour project. And im not even a Labour voter.
@endlessraining Kinnock had been leader of his party for 9 years and was bloodied by battles with the loony left. John Major had been in for 18 months. Imagine that reversed. (How would John Major have looked in 1999 !!!????)
i agree with left888. kinnock was wishy washy and a politician of no real substance at all. he waffled and giggled and harangued for nine years and left the labour party more out of touch than ever. i hope and pray for a day when we'll get a labour leader who actually listens to the left.
Speaking as a current Labour Party member, I think THIS is how the party should align itself again; Democratic Socialist progress over 'third way' stagnation and militant autocracy. Neil Kinnock got that right, Blair and his cronies got it terribly wrong.
An excellent political broadcast. It's a shame Neil Kinnock never became Prime Minister. He would have NEVER been a yes-man to George W. Bush. Thank goodness Gordon Brown is now Prime Minister.
Kinnick would have been better than blair, at least he was not false. The Tories are finished, cameron is the new blair and britain is tired of politicians like him.
Thursday April 9th 1992 I came the closest to suicide ever, but I was only 17 and got violently drunk instead and gatecrashed the Tory club armed with a marker pen
i miss john smith im onlly 20 but i still cry i can not believe hes died he is my hero and oh god i cant write any more im 2 upset please i would love some of u 2 rember john smith. its all crap now
If Labour hadn't modernized we would still be stuck with the Tories. They showed that it was okay to be middle class and vote for the left - well, yeah, not that far left. Some of my best friends are socialists, but most of the country isn't. That, I think, is the point. Anyway, just watched Gordon Brown's PM speech.
The old left cannot work in todays society. Why shouldnt people born with nothing move up and be successful. We must encourage those who can and look after those who cant. The Labour party have never been Socialists, look back to J Kier Hardie.
modernized? lol..yeah certainly one way of 'looking' at it..got rid of everything they stood for because they knew they had lost every debate in the 80s and stole tory policies is another way of looking at it
Could any right thinking person have possibly envisaged this country under a Kinnock premiership? The guy was (and still is) a pygmy. Why do people still pine for socialism? Why? Everywhere it's been tried it has led to disaster. The only core belief all socialists share is envy.
"Everywhere it's been tried it's lead to disaster." What about Sandinistas in Nicaragua where the literacy rate went from less than 40% to about 86% in 2 years. Look at the establishment of welfare state in Europe. Look at the improvements for the people in Venezuela compared to 10 years ago. The only core interest capitalists share is personal greed.
Although I will continue to support labour, there is an element of discomfort regarding the way labour have taken a right turn and seem to have increasing numbers of middle class MP's. Is it moderism or defeatism. ia the working class spent? Do we have to climb the ladder of capitalism or else? If we didnt vote Labour, who would we vote for? Dont say Tory or lib cos id rather die.
Northernsoul are you utterly naive? Classic socialist mentality - envy, class prejudice and rank stupidity. That's why prats like Kinnock and Foot were never elected - because thank God the British people still have some common sense.
Labour has swung to the right a little in the last decade, but I think Brown will bring it back. This can be seen for example by the way that he has promised to give the public sector a much greater role in sponsering city academies, asking universities instead of big companies.
Of course Blair SAID things like that. He just didn't carry them out. It's the same shallow rhetoric that Kinnock and Blair both used. Expansive gestures about target issues and little policy follow-up.
kinnock is a legend. he was and is the real deal. spoke truth and from the heart. he wasnt too far left either. lets be frank if he looked and sounded like blair or cameron hed have beaten major. sadly uk wasnt ready for a bald ginger welsh guy speaking the truth. he spoke of eveyrthing that mmatters now. John smith was a tragic loss RIP.
That's a myth. it had very little effect. it was only afterwards that it came to simbolise the style of Labour's campaign. See martin Westlake's biography of Kinnock for a full explanation: if you can understand why Kinnock lost in 1992, you will understand why Cameron will lose in 2009.
Surely the opposite is true. Brown is the highly-intelligent, analytical, cerebral one who can't play the PR game and come accross well because he answers questions in so much detail. Cameron is the one who can play the game, has the quips, the sound-bites, comes over as being more approachable...but many think he has little substance really apart from being a showman.
its a shame all those old people at the beginning, many of whom probably served during the great war are no longer with us :(

As a Conservative I am baffled as to why Kinnock didnt come to power he clearly had more charisma than John Major but his triumphalism cost him.

It was specially composed for the Labour Party election 92 campaign. I doubt if it was ever put on commercial release.

1992....the Conservatives won it with a small lead. John Smith looks a bit weak in his speech, most probably because of his heart problem.
He deserves the respect of people cuz he put Labour back on track, even though it was still another 5 long years before the party took power!

I would hardly say that Labour stands for the working people anymore, more like the Billionaires. Still, its better than a Tory government.
