@vanhouten64 I read an article wherein Stipe answered fans' questions about his songs. And yes, he definitely said he wrote it about a man, though he also claimed it was about "no one in particular".
Monster is one of the most sexy albums of the nineties. Seriosly! Im a sucker for REM, and though this is not up there with their best records, it is definitely much more vibrant and exciting than its two predecessors. And then it's just got those stunning songs like this one, I dont sleep I dream, and Tongue, which is a masterpiece in itself.
hey guys does anyone know a song( R.E.M) wich goes like " 'cause eeeverything, eeeverythiiing...eeeends...." I remember watching it first time on some music channel, at 2009 I think, and it was brand new.... I've searched the whole internet.... :(
@themooddisorders - If you really know what "You" is about, would you care to share with the rest of us? (I've been kinda obsessing over this song for a while now)... :P
@LantaGem Stipe said in interviews after the album Monster was released that he wrote the lyrics after Kurt Cobain's death, and that he had reached out to Cobain before his suicide but never could "get through" to him. As far as anything else, I think that may be speculation.
Re: Other R.E.M. songs that can be described as both beautiful and subtly menacing... "I Remember California" off 1988's Green album gives me a similar vibe to "You".
Well, there's no reference to "Taurus", but the lyrics do state at one point:
"I can wing around your Saturn smile, shout at the moon
I walked the tension wire line
And I learned to disrespect the signs
And I want you like a Pisces rising, even though".....
...
..
Neither River, Kurt or Stipe had a Pisces Rising (Kurt was a Pisces/Virgo Rising; River was Virgo/Scorpio Rising; and Stipe is Capricorn/Libra Rising)... So who knows who it's about...
@vaguelyhumanoid - "beautiful and subtly menacing" is a great way of putting it! I'd also agree with the Radiohead comment.
For those wondering, I really don't think it's about Kurt Cobain, and Michael Stipe himself has said (quote) "I do think I wrote it to a man, but noone real or in particular". I commented months ago re: my own interpretation... but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has noticed the "siren sound" @ the 3:55 minute mark?
@AngelVomit26 WT- ?? Of course it's a man singing. It's Michael Stipe you fool!
What I MEANT was: a couple of years back, Stipe admitted he wrote this song ABOUT another man, however he insisted it wasn't about any PARTICULAR guy - just a "fictional character" I guess. I wouldn't be too sure tho...
What's with the eerie astrological references in this song? Stipe writes such well read and poetic lyrics. Love the song, definitely the highest point of this album's paranoid atmosphere.
I believe it's about an ex-lover for whom Stipe still has feelings even though the guy in question has since "passed on". It's written from the POV of a dream... it's full of longing and regret.
I also thought of River as the most likely subject. Whomever it was written about, this song is definitely referring to a sexual relationship/lover, past or present ... I dunno about you, but I don't usually say "you turn me on" OR "let me hold your syrup next to mine" to any of my platonic friends!
I do not have this CD in my collection. It is clear after hearing two songs off it I have erred. I will get it right away.

I love this song, so beautiful and subtly menacing.
Never really paid attention to the lyrics, but they're some of the group's best.
You can really tell how they influenced Radiohead.
