To avoid cracking the tube, just fill it with water most of the way, leaving some space at the top, and store it up-right in your freezer without the lid on. As the ice expands, it should travel up (the path of least resistance) and if you left enough space, you can screw the lid on after it's frozen.

As long as you don't fill the tube up completely and leave some room for expansion, cracking the tube shouldn't be a problem. My parents owned their own custom injection molding business, so I am familiar with several types of plastic and most of them are quite strong,
