ultimately, the decision on how many athletes and in what weight class belonged not to the lifters but to alexey medvedev, head coach of the 1988 team ussr. popov was a world class athlete in the 100 kg class, he won the nationals in 1988 in the 100 kg class with 430 kg total. so, the question was why the coaches decided that he should compete as second Soviet athlete in the 110 kg class at the Olympics?
i suppose i was too quick to judge, i dont really know enough about him to make any kind of judgement. medvedev seems to have been a bit of an a hole, given that he seemed to treat kuznetsov like a child, taranenko said he would never have told him about the money he earned for the 266 as he said medvedev would have taken it from him and now the handling of popov...
i guess he was under a lot of pressure, but seems like an undesirable fellow...
Does anyone know why Alexander Popov competed in the 110KG weightclass at the 1988 Olympics? It seems that most of 1988 he competed in the 100KG class.
@liftupPreview He could have earned the silver in 1988 if he stayed in the 100 KG. My guess he did not make the weight, certainly I don't agree that the coach moved him as a second guy in the 110, he would have been better as a second guy in the 100 where he could earn a medal. It is not unlikely if you don't make the weight that you compete in the upper class, provided you made the numbers to compete. That is why competition starts with the lowest weight class and go up.
Did Niku Vlad compete in Soul ? He' s one of my favourite lifters from Romania !

if he was so promising, how come kuznetsov was handing him his own backside? (bit extreme perhaps)
