@88mphsss Well, actually not. By this time, the DGA is already the precursor to the Oscar and Avildsen won the DGA, so it was pretty much sealed despite "ROCKY" eventually getting less Oscars than "NETWORK" or "ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN". Hope that helps :)
Does anyone know at what point in the ceremony they did this award? Some years they randomly do Director before the two lead acting trophies. This is a big category, and seemed like Rocky had little momentum going into this part of the evening, was this a shock to anyone at the time? B. Director gives a huge hint at what will take Pic.
it's funny how ppl say rocky is very motivational and more influential than movies like taxi driver but I think rocky II might b better than the original
He was a cute little thing. I read that the same day he was fired from directing Saturday Night Fever, he had also learned that he was nominted for directing Rocky. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them all and there you have the facts of life.
@griffin324 He said it in his speech. Taxi Driver - while brilliant and one of my favorites - is a depressing, beat down of a film. People love stories of hope and underdogs. Rocky, personally, is my favorite film of all time.
Who is giving the thumbs down? Instead of being a coward, why not give some logical reasoning as to WHY Rocky didn't deserve to win? Rocky is absolutely one of the greatest films of all time and no one can argue otherwise. Period. That's the end of it.
It is a great movie - it's one of those rare ones that's pretty well impossible not to like. I wouldn't have picked it for Best Picture, but that's because the category that year was so great (four great classics nominated). Rocky certainly wasn't a bad choice, though.
The competition was tough, since the other titles mentioned were also excellent films, but the best of the bunch won. John G. Avildsen truly desreved it.
The director of "rocky" wins over BERGMAN and LUMET??? And Scorcese isn't even nominated??? What the fuck is wrong with the Academy???

@Wired4Life2 ur also forgetting the fact the sidney lumet won the golden globe so the oscar could have gone to him

Martin Scorcese should have taken Ingmar Bergman's spot.

shame on the academy for being a bunch of selfish queers

It never ceases to amaze me that they never thank their editor(s) who work with them for MONTHS in the cutting room. Shame on them.

Remember this was the 70s. People felt down about crime, drugs and a US president that had to resign. Rocky lifted the country up again symbolically.

taxi driver is a brilliant film but Rocky was in a different league....it was a film of a lifetime...ultimate classic and motivational film

Bill conti should have won for the rocky music and stallone should have won for screenplay. end of story.

lina wertmuller should've won. can't believe scorsese wasn't nominated. i love ingmar bergman but even he admitted face to face was overwrought.

The film won 3 Academy Awards.
The award for Best Director was very deserved, and also for Best Film Editing.
But the award for "Best Picture" was a mistake.

how could they overlook taxi driver...
griffin324 2 years ago 3
@griffin324
The same way they overlooked Saving Private Ryan. At least Taxi Driver lost to a classic. Ryan lost out to fucking Shakespeare in Love, ridiculous!

Solid nominees but it was Bergman's easily. Although Lumet might as well have won seeing as Face to Face wasn't even a Picture nominee.

I think sylvester Stallone should have won best actor that year, he made the movie.
