I love this song. Rick Springfield is great. I wish I could have seen a Rick Springfield concert when I was young. Jerry J Sharell sang a good version of this song on Kids Incorporated or whatever. He has and had a great singing voice too.
Neal Geraldo co-wrote this song in 1975 for sammy Hagar, Pat Benatar chose to sing John Mellencamps song "hit me with your best shot" on her first album over this (john wrote that song as a joke), over this one. Sammy made this song, Rick re did it in 81.
Actually I think Rick did this song first. Pat Benatar's husband, Neil G., wrote this song for her. She didn't want to do sing it and they passed it on to Rick. This song helped make his come back his from "Speak to the Sky" single in the early 1970's. I think he does a great job with it.
Sammy Hagar did SING the song but he did not write it. Pat Benatar's husband did. She didn't do it because she thought it was too masculine a song for her to sing. Rick was given the song after that. Sammy covered it a few years later.
Well, according to the 1978 album of Hagar's that it first appeared on, it says lyrics by Sammy Hagar. According to the liner notes in his newest best of collection, it was released by him as the b-side of his 1979 single, but it didn't take off, so he let Springfield do it and it became a hit. Even on lyric sites online it attributes Hagar as the writer. So I think you may have your stories wrong.

So I think you might have your story wrong.

Really? Huh, that's strange. I got my information from one of those biography tv shows a few years back. In the show, it said how Neil wrote it and they gave it to Springfield. I could of sworn Pat was on film saying such. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong. But that's where I got my info. Either way, it's a good song, no matter who wrote it.
HAHA...you did the same thing I did. When I got home and responded, it auto logged me into my son's account (RockHard), then it didn't look like it took, so I posted again, and they all appeared at the top of the list rather than as a reply. Then today they popped into where they belong. Anyway...maybe Pat was lying...lol. It is just that everywhere I find the song, it is attributed to being written by Hagar, and he did first record it in 1978 which was before Pat made her first album.
Okay, I went and found my Working Class Dog album (yes, I know it dates me) and it gives Hagar credit as the writer. You won. The tv show gave out wrong info or I'm just losing my memory as 40 approaches. lol!
Sammy Hagar wrote it for Pat Benetar originally. She said it sounded too much like a guy song, so it got pitched to Rick.

Pat Benatar's husband wrote it, but Hagar got credited for it, while Springfield sang it. Either way I'm glad Rick's version became a huge hit.
