i think the ref done a good job throughout the fight ie LETTING them fight rather than continually getting between them . he did fuck up at the end though, he should have stopped it a few seconds earlier
i think the ref done a good job throughout the fight ie LETTING them fight rather than continually getting between them . he did fuck up at the end though, he should have stopped it a few seconds earlier
Beau Jack was so popular during the war years he sold out madison square garden on seven consecutive occasions - a record that was never broken while the old garden still stood - a lot was made about him ending up shining shoes later in life - but the truth came out when peter heller interviewed his family manyyears later - he had dozens of tailor made suits , owned a nice house and had money in the bank - he went back to shining shoes because he said it was honest work - legendary fighter
Beau Jack actually got beaten because he broke Ike's tooth! Ike was desperate when he realised and launched into the attack to stop further damage to himself. But he was dismayed at the Ref's lateness in stopping the fight. Look at the point of knockout, he turned to the Ref asking if he wanted him to actually kill Jack!! Two AMAZING champions that define Boxing!!
When Beau Jack was asked about the stoppage I think he said summat to the effect: "late stoppage?? Im Beau Jack to beat me you have to kill me or nail me to the canvass!"
bleeding hearts on here with their modern day standards , this is how it was back then , christ this was the era when you could drop atom bombs on cities and no one cared , its just how it was . blokes who quit in the ring never got payed half the time or got the chance to make good money ever again.
On watching this as an old man on a HBO special beau jack was asked what he thought of the ref letting him get hit like that , he said " I 'm Beau jack , to beat me you have to kill me where I.m standing " pure class from a true warrior of the ring.
The end of the fight was fucking disgusting. The only think that was actually holding up Jack were his arms over the ropes, and williams constant barrage of punches. Christ. I think the fight should have been stopped about 3 seconds before Jack even ended up pinned near the corner. The ref should have been shot...
the ref is a bitch but u know how back in days is this was like 1909 and refs back those days left let more hit of like example back in day football was just fighten
true. this looked much worse like ben paret vs emile griffith lll . he was unconscious standing there talking hard punches to the head and jaw. i dont know how someone survives that. the referee belongs into the gas chamber for this shit
I met Ike williams about 30 years ago. I didn't even know who he was.
It was in brooklyn and on the weekends he'd show fight films then answer questions later. Somebody asked him, "Say Ike, you were one of the best, so why didn't you ever fight Sugar Ray Robinson?"
Ike shook his head, paused then said, "Cause I knew there was no way I could beat him."
Non capisco cosa aspettasse ad interropere l'incontro quell'incosciente (per non dire altro) dell'arbitro... non so come sia finita ma se il poveraccio ci ha rimesso la vita metterei in galera l'arbitro per omicidio colposo...
my oldhead told me stories years ago of when ike williams use to come to philly to train. He told me that whenever Ike came to town, the philly hospital emergency rooms would be filled with fighters getting treatment for broken ribs and jaws. The only lightweight that i think would have given Ike fits is sweat pea @ lightweight. although personally, i think mosely was the best lightweight I've witnessed in my era, he was a beast
By the standards of any era, the ref's actions--or lack of--in the 6th round were beyond negligent. Williams himself once remarked, when asked about the stoppage, "I didn't want to kill the man."
Beau Jack went back to the same shoe shine pitch he had before he was boxing mega star - the only guy to ever sell out madison square garden 3 X's in a row at the height of WW2 - he had his money , nice house ,$200 suits but shoe shining was all he knew - it was fashionable for the fight crowd to eat at jack dempsey's restaurant then go and hang with Beau before going to the garden for a title fight
I'd say Williams may actually have had the style to beat Duran, but other, slicker fighters had the style to beat Williams, such as Whitaker or Benny Leonard. Carlos Ortiz matches up fairly with any of them as well.
Ike's probably the most under-rated lightweight ever.
Against Duran in his prime I'd say it could go either way. Duran was a monster at 135lbs but De Jesus gave him plenty of trouble and IW is better than DJ.
Whitaker is the best boxer/technician ever in the division but I doubt he could've beaten these two.
IW is a pocket version of Sugar Ray Robinson and despite what he looked like at higher weights RD was fast at 135lbs. Both could hit hard and take punishment if necessary.
This was a championship fight (the champion being Williams who was the eventual winner) and was therefore very serious business. As a rule, the referee was not expected to halt the fight unless he was absolutely certain that it was over.
Williams was forced by an inept referee to hit Beau Jack 10 - 12 times more than necessary.
If you look at the ref through the fight he's walking around like a Prima Donna, not really concentrating on what the fighters are up to - far more preoccupied with how he looks to the crowd and the boxing board - making it look as if he's looking. He's an idiot.
Indeed....the ref is a complete moron...dolt...imbecile...idiot words cannot describe the stupidity. Poor Williams did not know what the hell to do. Both are great fighters. Jack reminds me a little of Mike Tyson in style.
I saw a TV show once where Tyson said that Beau Jack was his mentor, Cus D'Amato's favourite lightweight of all time. So maybe Jack had an influence over Tyson via D'Amato

Ref's so far out of frame most of this video, you have to think he's taking smoke breaks or something.

it's cool to see the old school guys be able to punch fluidly at really close range.... and these guys had some bombs at 135 lbs.

WOW!!! THIS is great footage. Ike Williams was one of the greatest lightweights of all time. Only Duran could probably have beaten him.

Great fight, I think Ike might win a split or unanimous decision over Duran.
