i think the ref done a good job throughout the fight ie LETTING them fight rather than continually getting between them . he did fuck up at the end though, he should have stopped it a few seconds earlier

The end of the fight was fucking disgusting. The only think that was actually holding up Jack were his arms over the ropes, and williams constant barrage of punches. Christ. I think the fight should have been stopped about 3 seconds before Jack even ended up pinned near the corner. The ref should have been shot...

I met Ike williams about 30 years ago. I didn't even know who he was.

It was in brooklyn and on the weekends he'd show fight films then answer questions later. Somebody asked him, "Say Ike, you were one of the best, so why didn't you ever fight Sugar Ray Robinson?"

my oldhead told me stories years ago of when ike williams use to come to philly to train. He told me that whenever Ike came to town, the philly hospital emergency rooms would be filled with fighters getting treatment for broken ribs and jaws. The only lightweight that i think would have given Ike fits is sweat pea @ lightweight. although personally, i think mosely was the best lightweight I've witnessed in my era, he was a beast

Beau Jack went back to the same shoe shine pitch he had before he was boxing mega star - the only guy to ever sell out madison square garden 3 X's in a row at the height of WW2 - he had his money , nice house ,$200 suits but shoe shining was all he knew - it was fashionable for the fight crowd to eat at jack dempsey's restaurant then go and hang with Beau before going to the garden for a title fight

WOW!!! THIS is great footage. Ike Williams was one of the greatest lightweights of all time.  Only Duran could probably have beaten him.

I'd say Williams may actually have had the style to beat Duran, but other, slicker fighters had the style to beat Williams, such as Whitaker or Benny Leonard. Carlos Ortiz matches up fairly with any of them as well.

Ike's probably the most under-rated lightweight ever.

Against Duran in his prime I'd say it could go either way. Duran was a monster at 135lbs but De Jesus gave him plenty of trouble and IW is better than DJ.

Whitaker is the best boxer/technician ever in the division but I doubt he could've beaten these two.

IW is a pocket version of Sugar Ray Robinson and despite what he looked like at higher weights RD was fast at 135lbs. Both could hit hard and take punishment if necessary.

This was a championship fight (the champion being Williams who was the eventual winner) and was therefore very serious business. As a rule, the referee was not expected to halt the fight unless he was absolutely certain that it was over.

Williams was forced by an inept referee to hit Beau Jack 10 - 12 times more than necessary.

If you look at the ref through the fight he's walking around like a Prima Donna, not really concentrating on what the fighters are up to - far more preoccupied with how he looks to the crowd and the boxing board - making it look as if he's looking. He's an idiot.

I saw a TV show once where Tyson said that Beau Jack was his mentor, Cus D'Amato's favourite lightweight of all time. So maybe Jack had an influence over Tyson via D'Amato
