Wow. The art and animation are so poor compared to the 1986 movie. And everyone is grey. What is it about "nu-anime" that states they're not allowed to actually use colours anymore?
@sec0ndevolution I didn't like what they did to Jagi here either. He's supposed to be a shameless bully with a huge ego. He seems like a dim wit and a whiny. Aside from the improvement in animation, there's no reason to revamp a good anime series when it was fine the way it was.
I think according to the Jagi Gaiden manga, there is some more context to this. Jagi has already become the leader of a gang of criminals (making his thugs one of the few organizations of villains to predate the apocalypse), so retaining the ability to use Hokuto Shin Ken is a matter of survival for him.
@currentgodhandowner He's pissed that the youngest brother (Kenshiro) has been chosen as successor, and the rest of them will be forced to give up fighting (or face the consequences) and wants to know why Raoh & Toki (the other two) refuse to do anything about it.
@Karmoon7 I thought I'd be the only one who felt that way. Honestly I'd prefer even the old anime over this ( The TV show that is. ) But... this isn't terrible. I mean, if we had nothing to compare it to but the manga it's likely we'd be saying " OH MY GOD AWESOME! " and things like that.
jagi was always the weakest of the 4. i believe he was put into the amine to remind people that anger and rage are not part of martial arts can blind you in a fight .
yeah. i see why one would say it sucks. alot of times it sounds like a spanish accent or something mixed with japanese words. and his voice doesnt seem to do as well as akira kamiya (original voice actor for kenshiro in the tv series).
Personally I think Jagi had mastered the Hokuto ability to mimic other styles in order to give himself the seven stars and this was the only skill he had that Ken didn't have at the time they fought (he didn't "steal" them like people are saying). Raoh used some Nanto moves to enhance his style, Ken to show off and Jagi as a last ditched effort to win. But it didn't matter because Jagi's overall skill sucked. Still it makes me wonder how good he would be if he trained and wasn't a cheapass.
Jagi having his own backstory and girlfriend sucks. He was supposed to be a glorified thug and nothing more. Buronson & Hara didn't make him complex for that reason.
And thats why he suffers as a character in comparation. Hes a thug, but a Hakuto No Ken kind of thug, not a normal streeth punk.
The backstory adds more layers, shows some feats of actual skill and strenght and best of all, doesnt make an excuse to the way he is, it just shows the readers the "why".
Jagi was always one of my favorite guys for some reason. It's kind of a shame he doesn't have more background and story lines, he's one of the Hokuto Brothers but he gets less time devoted to him then pretty much everyone else in the entire series.
It's called Jagi Gaiden: Flowering of Evil. It's currently being fan translated by the people on Heart of Madness. Go there and download it! From what I've read so far, I'm impressed with it.
Well that's not difficult; Jagi didn't have any kind of backstory/character development in the original.
Jagi was a despicable bully who made a mockery out of Hokuto Shinken, with his cheap tactics and cheating. Buronson & Hara didn't want him to be anything more than that, and I'm pleased to accept that decision.
The Gaiden doesnt change that. Hes still a guy who wants to win at all costs, and doesnt care about the purity of martial arts. All the Gaiden does is showing the reader hes got a 3d character like the others and motivations, even if we dont agree with them.
What I don't understand is why Ryuuken would bother training 4 students if only one of them was going to inherit the title of Fist. Didn't he foresee the problems this would cause amongst the brothers? Or was he hedging his bets by raising an heir and some spares?
For example, Toki became terminally sick. If Ryuuken had no other students, it would have placed Hokuto Shinken in jeopardy. That is why he had to choose from either Raoh or Kenshiro, and since Raoh was ruthless, and Kenshiro had a shining potential he was chosen.
Jagi was just a patsy who Ryuuken kept around so the brothers would learn how to defeat someone truly evil.
Damn, that's cold. Practical, but cold. I agree with VendavalEste about Ryuuken being a dick, but I never considered the "keeping a trained buttmonkey" angle regarding Jagi. Makes me think that Ryuuken was the biggest bastard to begin with, since his decisions indirectly led to a lot of the character development of the brothers later on.
nah, don't blame ryuuken, it's hokuto shinken's tradition.... it's been like this for 2000 years... why change tradition? even though, ryuuken as a kid was kind of a total dick, back when his name was kasumi ramon.
Yeah it was first supposed to be Raoh, then Ryuken saw that Toki had way more potential than Raoh and was ready to name his as the successor but luckily for Kenshiro, Toki got sick and couldn't reach his full potential.
I doubt he planned to kill the ones who did not inherit the title. He was just going to take their knowledge of Hokuto Shinken away, and most likely their memories too. This way they would have still lived worthwhile lives, while keeping the tradition of only one successor.
According to Jagi Gaiden (if you consider it canon), Jagi was actually Ryuken's FIRST adopted son. He later adopted Raoh, Toki, and Kenshiro without the intention of teaching Jagi the art of Hokuto Shinken. He told Jagi to his face that he would always be his son, but never his student. It wasn't until Jagi took on a rival martial artist seeking to challenge Ryuken and barely beat him that Ryuken decided to train him in Hokuto Shinken.
I like to think that though Ryuken considered all four of the Hokuto brothers his sons, Jagi was closest to his heart, and that's why he didn't want Jagi getting tangled up in the brutal legacy of Hokuto Shinken. Jagi, of course, misinterpreted this concern as an indictment of weakness, so he threw himself into practicing the art all to please Ryuken.
In my opinion, If HNK was a more light-hearted anime/manga series, a character like kid Jagi would have ended up the successor of Hokuto Shinken, kinda like Kid Muscle from Ultimate Muscle.
In one of the supplementary booklets, it's said that Ryuuken kept Jagi so the successor would have someone evil to overcome. This makes sense, since Ryuuken implies that Kenshiro was foolish not to kill Jagi in their sparring fight.
He always was considering he was the black sheep of the Hokuto brothers usually depending on weapons and cheap tactics than using actual fighting techniques...
Senpuu1440: In regards to Kenshiro, Jagi was ALWAYS a dick to him, but had come to respect Raoh and Toki. In fact, Jagi tried to (JAGI GAIDEN SPOILER) choke Kenshiro to death when they first met (END SPOILER). Jagi had so much hatred for Kenshiro that (JAGI GAIDEN SPOILER) he actually attacked Kenshiro in the past when Ken tried to help his girlfriend Anna, whom was looking for Jagi for help after being literally raped to death by a evil biker gang (END SPOILER).
@senpuu1440 A good time before this. It was Jagi that influenced Shin to battle Ken and take Yuria against her will. He tried to convince Shin that Ken was naive, and to a certain degree he was right. But we see the beast Ken is today as a result of it.
I liked how it didn't go as far to show Kenshiro dodging bullets, it rather showed him pre-empting Jagi's attack and crossing that distance before Jagi knew what to do.
no offense but im tired of people comparing these remakes to the old movie what about the actual series that the old movie is based on it's way fucking better than any of the god damn movies, ovas, or remakes dammitt check it out hokuto no ken on youtube theres 109 episodes!
I actually like how ken was protrayed here very disciplined and did not attack jagi until he threatened his life. As for Raoh he had white hair in his original manga form
To me, Jagi was a Machiavelian strategist that got in over his head. If he wanted to be the Hokuto Shinken grand master so badly, he should have laid low for some time, but used his cronies to keep tabs on Kenshiro. Eventually, Kenshiro and Raoh would have fought to the death, killing each other in the process, and Toki would have eventually died from the radiation poisoning, making Jagi the last surviving practitioner of Hokuto Shinken.
Yeah, me, too. If it were up to me, Jagi wouldn't have appeared until near the end of the series. He would have used his Machiavelian ways to screw more people over, and would have picked up more moves. He would have fought Ken before Ken took on Raoh at Hokuto Renkitouza, explaining to Ken that he was the cause of everything that went wrong in Ken's life since Yuria was taken from him, making the fight more interesting.
On a similar note, I don't think Jagi was ALWAYS evil. I think he was swayed by the power of knowing Hokuto Shinken and Raoh's ambition. In the original anime series, as a kid, he seemed to have trained as hard as his Hokuto brothers did. He even had the balls to spar with Raoh. But as Kenshiro said in the HNK movie dub by Streamline Pictures, "Damn. What a waste."
I really wish there was something that showed Jagi's roots, as we saw Raoh and Toki as children together, what would have persuaded Ryuuken to take him on? I wonder why Jagi is such a favourite of mine, probably because he's such a bastard and manages to be likeable at the same time.
That brings me to my next question: if Jagi was SO bad at Hokuto Shinken and evil, wouldn't it have made sense to eliminate him from the Hokuto Shinken school a long time ago?
I think Ryuuken was a dick in general, lol. I don't imagine Jagi displayed much evil as a kid, and I wonder how good he is at Hokuto Shinken, but that was never displayed. You'd be right in guessing he was probably the worst practitioner, but even then he's a deadly force.
I guess it's just one of the many loose ends Buronson and Tetsuo Hara forgot to wrap up. The HNK series is notorious for that as well as plot holes and retcons.
I think Ken's rage would have erupted if Jagi told him all that and thus Jagi would have been fucked, lol. I've got a little What-If in my head in which Jagi is the only surviving Hokuto brother, I don't know what he would have done about the battle Ken and Raoh at the end of the series, it would be typical of him to hide a good distance away and assassinate one of them with a sniper rifle after the fight.
Sounds like a good HNK fan fiction. I seriously doubt a bullet from a sniper rifle would actually hurt either Kenshiro or Raoh; mastering Hokuto Shinken practically makes you a human god, so most conventional weapons wouldn't really have that much effect on them. In the 1986 HNK movie, Ken got hit point blank in the chest with an arrow, and he pulled it out like it was nothing.
What I was thinking about the bullet hitting them was that they wouldn't know, so they'd catch it from shock. The many times Ken takes arrows in the series, I'd say he's braced himself for those.
Still, I really don't think bullets would have any effect on neither Kenshiro nor Raoh. Jagi hit Kenshiro with a stone pillar and it didn't even phase Ken, and Raoh fell several stories to the ground because of Rihaku's trap, and it didn't even really hurt him.
Now that I think about it, Jagi pulling the gun on Kenshiro would have been useless, as Hokuto Shinken can make the human body literally stronger than steel.
Loader2k1 you are correct that if Jagi had laid low for awhile he could have ended up a lot better off. But he stoped caring about wanting to be the successor after Kenshiro deformed him. After that he wanted nothing but to ruin Kenshiro's reputation and watch him die.
But even then if all the Hokuto masters croaked there were still Nanto peeps stronger than him. He still would have never been able to beat Souther or Juuza and it is unlikely even Rei, Shuu or Juda.
True. Rei and possibly Shuu would have came for him eventually. However, I can see Jagi joining forces with Yuda and Souther, forming a Legion of Doom-style army, except with Hokuto and Nanto reunited in evil. And thus, Falco would have to come and give all three a Gento beatdown.
hmmm. Souther vs Falco. That one Ken-oh met him, they knew it was going to be a draw. Still, it would be an interesting match. Maybe just like trying to figure out which technique Juuza would use against the Fang Clan leader and his iron body technique. :)
Thanks. The thumbs down probably came from some guy(along with his cheerleading group)that I got into a debate with concerning the words "anime" and "cartoon".
It was upgraded in every way, but they took out and abridged too much important stuff to make it like good. Why can't they just copy the original but with the improvements?
Very disapointing. I loved the manga and the TV series, but they could have done a better job with these remakes. The animation and quality is not up to today's standard and seems to lacky at times.
Well, I guess it helps to understand a forgein language so that way you don't have to read the subtitles to understand what they're saying. But then again, if you know the story by heart, then you'll know exactly what's going on.
If you've seen the original series or so, you'll probably have a basic understanding. Jagi is pissed that Kenshiro is the successor and he fears that they will lose their memories.
i wish i knew what they were saying

Guys, why did they remake this? The art is worse, the voices are really weak, the animation is your average TV show level of quality at best.

Eventually, Kenshiro and Raoh would have fought to the death, killing each other in the process, and Toki would have eventually died from the radiation poisoning, making Jagi the last surviving practitioner of Hokuto Shinken.

That's pretty awesome and I like to think of the guy as some evil king after that, unfortunately, he was a dumbass.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
Yeah, me, too. If it were up to me, Jagi wouldn't have appeared until near the end of the series. He would have used his Machiavelian ways to screw more people over, and would have picked up more moves. He would have fought Ken before Ken took on Raoh at Hokuto Renkitouza, explaining to Ken that he was the cause of everything that went wrong in Ken's life since Yuria was taken from him, making the fight more interesting.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
On a similar note, I don't think Jagi was ALWAYS evil. I think he was swayed by the power of knowing Hokuto Shinken and Raoh's ambition. In the original anime series, as a kid, he seemed to have trained as hard as his Hokuto brothers did. He even had the balls to spar with Raoh. But as Kenshiro said in the HNK movie dub by Streamline Pictures, "Damn. What a waste."
Loader2K1 3 years ago
I really wish there was something that showed Jagi's roots, as we saw Raoh and Toki as children together, what would have persuaded Ryuuken to take him on? I wonder why Jagi is such a favourite of mine, probably because he's such a bastard and manages to be likeable at the same time.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
That brings me to my next question: if Jagi was SO bad at Hokuto Shinken and evil, wouldn't it have made sense to eliminate him from the Hokuto Shinken school a long time ago?
Loader2K1 3 years ago
I think Ryuuken was a dick in general, lol. I don't imagine Jagi displayed much evil as a kid, and I wonder how good he is at Hokuto Shinken, but that was never displayed. You'd be right in guessing he was probably the worst practitioner, but even then he's a deadly force.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
You know what sucks? Even Yuda has been treated better than Jagi in the series, and HE FUCKING KILLED MAMIYA'S PARENTS!!! RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER!!!
Loader2K1 3 years ago
*Runs off to the bigger evil bastard*.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
I forgot to add that he also kidnapped and tortured Mamiya as well.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
Jagi did?
VendavalEste 3 years ago
No. Yuda did.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
Where did Yuda come in to this? o_o
VendavalEste 3 years ago
I guess it's just one of the many loose ends Buronson and Tetsuo Hara forgot to wrap up. The HNK series is notorious for that as well as plot holes and retcons.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
I think Ken's rage would have erupted if Jagi told him all that and thus Jagi would have been fucked, lol. I've got a little What-If in my head in which Jagi is the only surviving Hokuto brother, I don't know what he would have done about the battle Ken and Raoh at the end of the series, it would be typical of him to hide a good distance away and assassinate one of them with a sniper rifle after the fight.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
Sounds like a good HNK fan fiction. I seriously doubt a bullet from a sniper rifle would actually hurt either Kenshiro or Raoh; mastering Hokuto Shinken practically makes you a human god, so most conventional weapons wouldn't really have that much effect on them. In the 1986 HNK movie, Ken got hit point blank in the chest with an arrow, and he pulled it out like it was nothing.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
What I was thinking about the bullet hitting them was that they wouldn't know, so they'd catch it from shock. The many times Ken takes arrows in the series, I'd say he's braced himself for those.
VendavalEste 3 years ago
Still, I really don't think bullets would have any effect on neither Kenshiro nor Raoh. Jagi hit Kenshiro with a stone pillar and it didn't even phase Ken, and Raoh fell several stories to the ground because of Rihaku's trap, and it didn't even really hurt him.
Now that I think about it, Jagi pulling the gun on Kenshiro would have been useless, as Hokuto Shinken can make the human body literally stronger than steel.
Loader2K1 3 years ago
Loader2k1 you are correct that if Jagi had laid low for awhile he could have ended up a lot better off. But he stoped caring about wanting to be the successor after Kenshiro deformed him. After that he wanted nothing but to ruin Kenshiro's reputation and watch him die.
But even then if all the Hokuto masters croaked there were still Nanto peeps stronger than him. He still would have never been able to beat Souther or Juuza and it is unlikely even Rei, Shuu or Juda.
BernardBluth 2 years ago
Loader2K1 2 years ago
hmmm. Souther vs Falco. That one Ken-oh met him, they knew it was going to be a draw. Still, it would be an interesting match. Maybe just like trying to figure out which technique Juuza would use against the Fang Clan leader and his iron body technique. :)

My money is on Falco.

the animation sucks, it's awful. the series and old movie was better.

i agree man whoever thumbs down on you has obviously never experienced the original series.
GorillaBastards 3 years ago
Thanks. The thumbs down probably came from some guy(along with his cheerleading group)that I got into a debate with concerning the words "anime" and "cartoon".
jemidar 3 years ago
i prefer the manga over the old series. And this remake its good for me...
Izanagi1990 2 years ago
It was upgraded in every way, but they took out and abridged too much important stuff to make it like good. Why can't they just copy the original but with the improvements?

He originally did have white hair; it was turned black for the first anime.

jasemac88 4 years ago
Very disapointing. I loved the manga and the TV series, but they could have done a better job with these remakes. The animation and quality is not up to today's standard and seems to lacky at times.

original version is MUCH better
cromcruac 4 years ago
Well, I guess it helps to understand a forgein language so that way you don't have to read the subtitles to understand what they're saying. But then again, if you know the story by heart, then you'll know exactly what's going on.
MDthornton83 4 years ago
The voice acting ain't the same though. It's kinda watered down. I Couldn't feel the rage.

miami179 4 years ago
por tano bruto! decir que el diseño es choto es un insulto... no esta mejor que el manga, pero si mejor que la serie vieja
Izanagi1990 2 years ago
English subtitles would have been nice, but nice video.
Loader2K1 4 years ago
If you've seen the original series or so, you'll probably have a basic understanding. Jagi is pissed that Kenshiro is the successor and he fears that they will lose their memories.

I know.

Or become a vegetable.
lycurgus33 4 years ago
And that younger brothers are inferior. Just like in Royalty, he thinks that he deserves to be successor, just because hes older.
