  • Jimmy said that the black-light litebrite pegs wouldn't do well in managerial positions.

  • Oh yeah less commercials too. Only 2 or 3 per time out. And they didn't try to stuff the SAME ONES IN YOUR FACE BACK to BACK like they do today. Every time the head coach digs his nose there's another time out and you get more commercial time than game time. I want to kill the gecko, and those idiots who screw up the "like a good neighbor" song. "Do the jingle!" Shut up or I'll kill you. I need to fast forward all that shit. TEVO TIME!

  • The 70s and 80s were a magic time in the NFL. I used to wake up early with anticipation and turn on the TV and listen to this music. High end graphics or bells & whistles were not needed at all. Just a cool memorable theme song and Brent and the gang. talking to you calmly like a friend and not arguing with or interrupting each other like the idiot analysts do today. And football didn't have so many sissy type penalties for tackling too high, too low, with helmet, or tuck rules. Miss those days!

  • 1970's & 1980's football was in my opinion the BEST time for NFL football. Hard to explain to my kids. Thank you to all videos on YouTube!

  • I loved both this theme song (I still consider it to be the best one they ever had) plus the crew of Brent Mussberger, Irv Cross, Phyllis George, and Jayne Kennedy. I watched a lot of NFL football back then - far more than I do now. Ahh... those were the days.... Thanks You Tube and thanks htownlion

Most games in the 70s and 80s were still played outside in the elements and you actually had football dynastys and powerhouses (no "parity" rules) plus good solid defense and hard hitting.

  • @theskeptic2010 Cant 4get Jimmy "The Greek" hate em or love em, he was a big part of NFL Pregame viewing

  • lite brite graphics : )

  • Wow, this is in pristine quality. Must've come from the master tapes.

  • I remember waking up on Sunday morning as a young boy and loving to hear Brent Musburger saying "You are looking live at Texas Stadium where The Cowboys will take on -----..." and so on. Now pre- game shows are full of garbage and old information I hear on the ESPN the night before.

  • Wow....does THIS bring back MEMORIES, or what? That music used to send chills up my ten-year-old spine back in the early '80s.

  • Man Damn it seems just like yesterday I remember those Sundays so well NFL on CBS it was the real deal shit I'n the 80's just like the 9ers baby unstoppable!!!!

  • 8 years old in Westchester IL just starting to get an appriciation for football. Brent Musberger saying You are looking live at Soldier Field in Chicago where the Bears are set to face the____________ Now its a laugh fest for an hour and I dont even watch pregame anymore. In the 80's it was a half hour that got you jacked up for the games! Now its corporate AND STUPID!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, I loved CBS football back then. NFL today was the sh*t

  • Holy S***!!! memories of when I was 7 years old!!!

  • Holy S***!!! memories of when I was 7 years old!!!

  • Those were the days

  • I get a heart on when I hear this music

  • Considiring this was in the early 80's this is a good intro

  • Don't forget Irv Cross! CBS should roll the throwback music from this era just once!

  • They would put Phyllis George's name next to a placekicker. No offense to her, she was a crucial member of the NFL Today team, but punter/kicker is about the only position she could have played in the NFL.

  • "You are looking live..."

  • where is irv cross?

  • memories man watching this intro when i was 9 years old rooting like i am today for my beloved j-e-t-s and other games man where have thses years gone 28 years ago

  • Personality people,...! Personality and character was what T.V. and those who worked in it had!! This short opening segment is so much more spirited then what we are given today! Hey,....I want to confess that watching Phyllis George and Jane Kennedy cover football was SEXYYYY as it came! WHY,......cant they do the same today!!

  • Ohhh man, youth today. My good sir, that is NOT John Elway at :019! That is footage from Superbowl XII, January 1978!!!. It is QB Craig Morton getting crushed by rushing Cowboy player Ed "Too Tall Jones". Dallas won this Superbowl 27-10. The bronco uniforms is the style that was used in the 70's and 80's, and indeed Elway wore this same style uniform when he entered the league in 1983. Please PLEASE do some studying on the history of the NFL, it DID actually exist before the 1990's!!!

  • Classic Tv...

    I remember it well...

  • I remember this from the 1982 NFC Championship game,Redskins beat Cowboys 31-17.

  • This opening sucks! The one they used a few years before this was better.

  • I remember that. In the late 1970s,as part of the into was a highlight of Sir Walter going up top at the goalline against,I believe,Green Bay.

  • Search for the late '70's open--its on youtube and its great to see it again!

  • Awesome! I miss those days. Things were more simpler then.

  • The salary cap has ruined the sport. It's not parity it's bad football. There was plenty of parity back then but the owners are greedy and they sell us this.

  • The salary cap didn't ruined the NFL, the small market team like the Steelers, Packers, Ravens, and the Colts gotten better and win more. Baseball doesn't have a salary cap because team like the Yankees, Redsox, Dodgers, Mets, and Cibs win every year.

  • ??? The Steelers won 4 SB's in the 70's, GB won the first two as well as numerous NFL titles, the Ravens were the Colts. No team from today could even come close to a pre 94 good team. The Bills wouldn't lose four straight. Frank Reich would have been a starter.

As far baseball the only one of those teams that have won recently are the Yankees (first in 9 years) and the Sox (first one since 1918), Cubs last won in 1908, Dodgers 88 and the Mets 86?

  • great quality

  • no fun league

  • Wrong it's, Not For Losers.

  • I always felt CBS was the more conservative of the two networks in their approach to viewing NFL Football and analyst. NBC had more style and flair to their program. Even the music themes between the two networks were drastically different. They both were great at what they did though. No one was actually better than the other as far as I was concerned.

  • 1982 is when the NFL had a lonnnnnnnnnnng 9 week strike.

  • Say, who composed this theme?

  • I truly feel bad for NFL fans who were too young to see the NFL in the 70's and early 80's...they missed the very best of the game. And they don't realize how badly the game has deteriorated into an individual self-worship fest where the concept of team is lost and obscene money and stardom come first. Really sad.

  • Yeah, I know, I remember the football games from the 1970's and it was a different, yet better time. I guess being from Pittsburgh helps, I'm a Steelers fan. B-)

  • I totally agree. My kids just don't understand how much better it used to be.

  • early 80s not individual self-worship fest? ya mean not including the mark gastineau sack dance? i wish i would've been around to see the nfl back in the steelers, raiders & 49ers heydays, but honestly, i think the nfl is good these days too.

  • @idster7 Then, Gastineau's antics were the exception. Now, they're the rule.

  • @campaigner111 -- amen nfl football during the mid 70's to 80's was the best time

  • @campaigner111

Can I get a witness! You hit the nail squarely on the head campaigner. Same's true for Major League Baseball. NFL is still a good product, but not nearly as "big" as it was during its heyday of the 1970s & into the 1980s. While I am ok w/the 12 team playoff format & 4 divisions, I hate the bye week, hate games in Europe & hate playoff games starting at 8pm. Never used to be nearly as many dang commercials either. My kingdom for a time machine!

  • @campaigner111 AMEN. It use to be so entertaining, watching the greatness of the game every week back then. No money issues, no self worship crap...all the nonsense of today's game. Saw the first Monday night game, Johnny Unitas, what a show. Dandy Don, Howard Cosell, and of course Frank Gifford. Its so different today, what a waste it is anymore.

  • @campaigner111 Every 3 years, each team has an almost complete turnover of personnel. Just that alone is enough to give the NFL the middle finger. I hadn't watched a game for many years, until I tuned in for one Super Bowl only because one particular player was from my hometown. The game's atmosphere was so THICK with corporate advertisement that I felt that I was wearing a straightjacket!

  • @campaigner111 campaigner.... you said it. I don't like the changes and attitudes either.. esp CBS having the AFL and that awful ditty that play over and over at each break in the play.

  • I grew up with the NFL of the 1970's and 80's. This was when it was about the TEAM GAME OF FOOTBALL, and not a three-hour rap video and self-worship!!!! MattArchives said it best, "the business of football, and not sportainment".

  • campaigner i AGREE THE GAME HAS DEFINANTLY CHANGED, ITS BECAOME A BUSINESS INSTEAD OF A TEAM SPORT, I MISS THE DYNASTIES OF THE 70S, 80S AND 90S

  • This is when the NFL was in the business of Football and not sportainment.

  • What a nostalgic intro...I have a sudden urge to buy a Lite Brite!

  • Gotta love the porn music guitar wonk wonk wonk

  • "THE NFL TODAY is sponsored by Budweiser--this Bud's for you...by Smith Barney--they make money the old fashioned way, they earn it...by Ford Motor Company--look out world, here comes Ford...and by Federal Express--when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight."

  • you are looking live . i rem that one

  • old school is were its at

  • old school is were its at

  • "You are looking LIVE at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia ..."

  • Hahaha..I was sayin the same friggin thing in my head...hahaha..too funny..I miss when Pat Summeral used to open up with that

  • Actually, it was Brent Musberger. :-)

  • Oh no I meant when Pat used to open up with it on Fox or what ever channel him and Madden were on..I know that one was Brent

  • How did you get your hands on that intro? The theme is excellent and the video quality is immaculate.

  • this takes me back when the NFC was dominate in the 80's the niners, giants redskins, bears

  • Aww man. This brings back memories of my childhood. This is the first theme I watched when I began watching football. 27 years ago. This is the best one CBS had.

  • Oh yeah! I'm 9 years old again!! Thanks!

  • fellas i'm lovin the oldschool nfl theme songs keep em coming

  • Really a great theme and still is. Old school stuff you can't go wrong!

  • Hell, it wouldn't be a bad idea if they went back to these intro's.

  • GOTTA LOVE THAT GUITAR......Chicka waka chicka waka waka

  • ahhhh...such great memories!

  • that is awesome!

  • Jimmy 'The Greek' lol. I doubt you could get away with stuff like that nowadays!

  • yeah and he got fired for making racist comments, too!!

  • that don't surprise me! lol

  • yea i remember that, why blacks are faster than whites, "cuz they were raised on cotton farms and developed over time superior leg muscles"! Even in evolutionary terms that would mean a minimum of 4,000 years plus to make that big of a difference...Jimmy the Greek, luv ya dumbass.

  • >>>>>>>>"Jimmy the Greek, luv ya dumbass."

That's impossible, you idiot! You can't love someone who's a dumbass. It makes no sense whatsoever! Geez, when will people start using common sense?!?

*immediately destroys TxTechRox123's idiotic self with a grenade launcher*

  • We be talking old school with that! I don't care if it is a little outdated, it kicks ass!

  • Complete with super-black key signal!!!

  • God they should go back to this immediately

  • Wow! In high quality!

  • This is excellent. Good bridge between late 70's and mid 80's
