  • love the work here

  • Awesome Chunk

  • Such a beautiful spread. I used to cast net after school and I used a simpler method that wasnt as good but got the job done. I used to catch a lot of tilapia in the lake near where I lived. I would love to pick up a net again and try this technique.

  • Good video...showed good technique and a simple cast

  • That was an excellent video. I envy your ability to open the net to a perfect pancake. I'm sure it took lots of practice. I appreciate you taking the time to make the video. I liked that you explained everything as you went and then showed several angles of you throwing it. It helped me a lot. Thanks again!

  • This video is cool!!!!!!!!!

  • what is the easyest way to do this for some one learning on an 8ft net

  • Hey I'm selling a 10' cast net on eBay for $10 look up 10' cast net my eBay is edcarms

  • Was thr realy that many times you had to slow mo. But any way great vid:)

  • @xXxjo5hyxXx The slow motion is so you can see how the net gets triggered as it's released. Youtube does not have a slow motion setting to slow videos down while you watch. I showed slow mo from several angles.

  • Cool vid

  • thank u sir

  • is it easy for them nets get tangled?

  • Thank you very much, this was so very helpful!

  • Thaks Alot I Just learnede how to throw a cast net

  • Thanks.this video helped a lot of fisherman

  • @yakupkadri7278 I APPRECIATE THAT BUDDY, THANKS! stay safe on the water!

  • Thanks... seems a lot easier this way then all the other vids on youtube

  • is it legal to use cast net in california or what?

  • that would be awsome to live in tha t house at 2:58

  • im still trying to do it cos im left handed and my co-ordination is all good but when getting instructions from a rightie im clumsy as hell

  • im looking for a decent mullet net, what ft radius should i get and what spread per foot?

  • @Diablosleonheart The WEST COAST Mullet net is awesome. It is a huge 1-1/4" mesh(less parachuting) and sinks super fast. There are 3 models; Magnum-1lb per ft./ True Spread- 1-1/4lb per ft/ Classic1-1/2lb per ft. I use True Spreads. I use a 10ft because I am most comfortable with it. As far as you picking your size, it's up to your ability, a 6ft. is a good learning net, but 8 may suit you better long-term. Check out my " How to cast net Menhaden video" it has some good info in it. THANKS! MIKE

  • Pimpin shoes mate ;)

  • @michelleywelly1000 THANKS! no laces or clips keeps the net from getting caught on my feet all day!- Mike

  • cool

  • Awesome dude. That technique will helps me and my partners. Tanx.

  • sure did but now where do i get a freakin net lol

  • @Wangiwa420 westcoastnetscom or boatersworldcom

  • @Wangiwa420 i got a 5 ft net at wal mart. haha

  • Who sings the song that is playing in the video?

  • @bradbo165 It's called "Lay me down" by my old band "Mama Tribe" (I played drums). I have a live video of it on You Tube at Mamatribeband channel. If you email me or text me your address I'll send you a free cd with a mess of original songs on it. Glad you dug it! THANKS! Mike tmsmedley@hotmail.com 919-215-6848

  • ive never used this way, but i will definitly try it next time im out fishing, i usually throw an 8 foot, the way i do it is just the normal way i guess, i take it, wrap up the rope, grab the swivel then take about half the net and just get a pinch and grab a pinch with your left and cast, never heard about the elbow, i dont think i can explan it good though, peace, joey

  • Awesome cast..

    By the way..

What kind of cast net are you using..

  • @Elementgod12 West Coast True Spread- check out my " how to cast net Menhaden video" it may help.

    THANKS!-Mike

  • Easiest, quickest, and probably most accurate way to throw a cast net, thanks for the vid man!

  • Comment removed

  • If you have to start backwards,,,would'nt be harder to keep a eye on the bait? Good vid tho.

  • @gotncmudd It's a small inconvenience, but you get used to it.

  • ok...god

  • ''cuban style''

    lol

  • ahaha thats cool all i have is a little 6ft net and i can get pretty good spreads out of it

is it harder with a bigger net ?????????

  • thank u men

  • u said it was a ten inc (10 ") net at the biggening

  • VERY GOOD INFO,THANKS

  • This was beautiful great video. I'll practice now i the back yard to take it to the river here an a few weeks thanks man

  • i use a 4 foot net but in florida there is way to much obstruction

  • mmmmmmmm

  • great style bro... hope i will make it...

  • They are all the same high grade mono, but the magnum is 1lb, true sread is 1/12lb and classic is 2lb. The Classic will KILL you at this size. I use the True Spread for everything.

  • That is a big net what size is it

  • 10 ft Radius West Coast True Spread 1 1/2 lb per foot 3/8 mesh.

  • that net is like 10 foot

  • Wat Do You catch For bait Man

  • thanks bro

  • how much are the nets? I just buy wal mart brands...

  • They range from around 90 - 250. I use the True-Spread, it is the middle level net. The weight is the only difference between the 3. It runs around $150> Bass Pro now has them. The entry level is the Magnum, The middle is the True-Spread, and the highest end is the Pro series. The entry level Magnum Is WAY better than any Betts Walmart brand. The Pro is super heavy. Mike

  • Soak a mono net in liquid fabric softener mixed with water. (cup to 5 gallons of water. Soak for an hour or so before you go. It will spread better and will be limp like it was made of thread.

  • I have used MANY nets, and a West Coast Net CANNOT be beat on quality or price. The net in this video has turned brown from so much use in clay-stained water. I pulled up a shopping cart once.

    Mike

  • omg thats my prob im a righty and been having the rope in my right hand and heres how i do it

Step one put rope on RIGHT hand and coil it like you did here

step 2 grab hand link down on the neck of the net

step 3 take left hand grab the weight to the left

step 4 twist back and follow threw and cast

best iv got is a half open net but got 6 minnows and one is a 5 inch minnow but i would love a full open net

  • you roooooooock

  • This is a good old time style! bravo

    FAKO

  • yes that makes perfect sense...thank you very much

  • so the bottom of the net closes as u pull it up...???...Do u have to pull it really fast in order to seal the bottom before the fish escapes or how does this work...???...i love fishing and this looks like a lot of fun...i would appreciate and answer...thank you...

  • Steeve and Night, As the net sinks it "parachutes" under water making the outside perimitter of the net smaller and smaller as it sinks. In 30 feet of water a 10ft radius net (20ft wide overall) may only equal a 5 or 6 foot net by the time it gets down that far. The smaller the mesh size-the more "parachuting". You don't half to pull the net very fast as the "parachuting' actually helps encapsulate the bait. Hope this makes sense.--Mike

  • night if u pull up fast u will let the fish out u have to pull up slow

  • slow, keep the lead draggin the bottom...when it gets close to you hold your hand around it this will help close it up

  • excellent man, am just started an my net is very small compared to the one you are throwin here... i would love some advice on retreivin the net so i dont lose too many fish ( such as the when i should retrieve an wat type of net i should use for certain depths of water)

your a great help to all begginers man... thanks again

  • thanks a lot man... helped me loads

  • GREAT!- I will be doing another video on selecting the correct net, as well as a video on youth instructions. We are all getting older, and it helps when you can have your Son do the dirty work!-I'm glad it helped out, Mike.

  • fu==FUCKING SWEET!!!!!!!!PRICELESS!!!!!!!

  • Hey Mike, great video. What net size would you recommend for someone who is learning to throw the larger nets?

  • A West Coast 8 footer is the best way to transition to a bigger net. I use 10-12 foot Weast Coast Nets. Remember, the bigger you get,THE HEAVIER YOU GET. The 10 footer is the best overall size for me. Start with an 8, then move to a 10. The mesh should match the bait that you are catching. Go with the biggest mesh you can get< but not to big for the bait your catching. Some bait can swim through a big mesh< or get gill netted, and killed. A tiny mesh will sink slower< and "parachute" more.

  • can this method work on a 25 foot net aswell?

  • I think you mean a 12 foot radius? A 12 footer will open to 24 foot. Yes this will work with a 12 footer< although, I usually use the Cuban style for 12 footers.

    Mike

  • ahh. yes me and my buddy just learned to throw an 8 foot. we are still not perfect at it but we are gitting the hang of it. its not a perfect circle but im gussing a perfect circle isent always needed to catch mullet/shiners am i right?

and one more thing. how should you do the rotation when throwing a net? is it draw back slow come foward fast and relese mid section hight or chest hight?(8 foot fine mesh net)

  • You don't HAVE to have a perfect circle all the time, but if you learn to throw consistently, you will have great success. The release is very simple. Back to your target, rotate while slowly speeding up, and your hand are higher than your starting point as you release.

  • My nets been getting destroyed by rocks and random logs.

  • Mike, Thanks for making life easier!

  • nice

  • I love that this video helped you guys out. Stay in touch, let me know what everybody is catching on their live bait . My 10 year old Son throws a 5ft net like this, hopefully he will be up to a 10 footer by 14 years old!

    Mike

  • I love the explanation about the effects caused by grabbing the net closer too or further from the lead line. Never knew that. Great video and good instruction, thanks!

  • This probably the best way to cast a cast net, the technic can use for large or small net.

  • great video

i have a 12ft betts i can throw it off of the bridges with noproblem but i havent had any kid of luck being able to throw it off the boat

  • deffinitely added to 'favorites'!

  • I am right handed...I bunch everything in my right hand up to the half way point...reach down and grab the weighted part of the net and lay it over everything that is bunched in my right hand up to my wrist...inside out...then reach down again and grab the weighted end again with my left hand as far as my arms will spread..I toss the whole net to my left ...overhanded..letting go with my right hand 1st...pulling tension with my left hand, I let go of my left hand last...this way I stay dry

  • çakal

  • hey man very good throwing, you gave me some good tips. you should check out my vid of me throwin my 14ft ., just click on my name., its a knew video so please rate., thanks,,

  • This technique suits me best. I have been practising this throwing thing a while now with a small 6' net here in Trinidad and Tobago and I think this one suits me. I'm finally getting my net to open. Have a way to go till I get it opening like you, but it's a definite improvement. Also, it reminds me of how my grandfather used to do it. Cheers and Thanks!

  • Hey Mike, great vid.

I gotta ask you...what the sound track you're playing? I love it!!!

  • Greg, Glad you dig it. That song is from my old band "Mama Tribe" from Raleigh N.C. I played drums. I'm putting a Ytube channel together with videos. I'll let you know when it's up. If you know of a way for me to get you a full cd's worth of music, just tell me how to do it. I really just fish, and play drums, I'm not that great with a pc.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • Doint thats shit with your teath is the redneck way its dumb

  • Very interesting technique... Very simular to what my grandpa taught me. Always go with the momentum of the net. Much better technique compared to those idiots with the lead line in their mouths.

  • I have a 3.5 renegade cast net and a 10 ft super spreader series net

  • I let go with both hands at the exact same time. The line pops off pinky on its own. The pinky isnt that important, as long as you can get a handful of net.

    Mike

  • beautiful...

  • Great Technique, especially for big nets

  • YOUR THE FUKN MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice vid i have an 6 foot cracker net and i tried your way and it worked

  • Hey, Mike. I just found this method video. I have been using the Cuban method you showed me for about a year now. I tried this in the yard with my 12 foot menhadden net and made a perfect circle every time. I think this method will get me less wet but I'm not putting the Grundens away just yet! Thanks again,

    Jaybee

  • did you catch anything when you threw it out?

  • I thought this was guna be REALLY HARD to attempt but IT OPENEN TO THE MAX PERCECT CIRCLE first try to Im in love witht his method and i can CAST OUT WAYYYY Further than i could before Thanks for BEING AWSOME MAN!

  • That's Great man. I'm glad it works for you!

    Mike

  • You're the man! You make that 10 footer look like nothing. I throw an 8 ft. for shrimp and it wears me out!

  • Ok I never use one, but I found a cast net so I will try use it to get baitfish, mine is much smaller but I want to thank you for a nice guide.

  • too much work to throw a 10 foot net..ill stick to my 6ft

  • heyya mike, its ash again.

just wondering if u have given my way a go and the results u got with it.

wat sort of bait and fish are u catching in america. anyways ill talk to u soon.

    Tight Lines!:)

    Ash

  • Hey Ash, Sorry, I have not thrown a net in a little while. It's very Hot here right now, so we are trolling Umbrella Rigs. I start with live bait again in November through June. We catch several kinds of bait here; Gizzard Shad, Threadfin Shad, Blue back as well as Alwive Herring in fresh water. In salt we catch Bunker (Menhaden, pogies). and some mullet. How bout you? Mike

  • This has to be the best way to throw a net! We had a storm come through a few nights ago, the tide was really high a couple nights before and I did pretty well catching shrimp!

I'm still watching the video to try and perfect it. I can't get my net to open all the way. Maybe I'm not throwing hard enough?

    Great Video!

  • That's great Sam, make sure that when you turn to throw the net out, you let go with both hands at the same time. It's very common to want to pull, spin,or twist the net. Just throw it out. Mike

  • im in cairns, which is in far north queesland austrailia. at the moment i am cleaning up on the average sized banana prawns and of course the sardines and mullet fishing offshore isnt going very well at the moment. it is very windy but inshore there is lots of mangrove jack barra queenies bream and grunter around these are pretty good fighting fish but beacuause of the rain we r catching them in the channels chasing bait that is about it through soft plastics are working well wat about you?

  • yeah it does. but it works for the smaller nets aswell.

im 14, but ive been casting for 8 years now.

so ive basically mastered the technique and i can use it from 6 footers to 14 footers.

thanks for the comments back i wasnt sure u were going to comment me back

    cheers - ash

  • Ash, Let me know what is going on down there. What are you catching, what bait are you using? I have also taught my son to throw a net, he has been doing it for 3 years now, and he is 10. I'm getting old and cranky, so I need him to take over some of the hard work!

    Mike

  • yes, thats correct. im sorry i cannot put a video of me casting at the moment as i havent got my computer im using a dfferent one to which has got my videos on it.

i am doing all the same things as u r. but just intead of a pinch of lead over ur elbow i put half of the lead and grab the inside.

i am sorry again if u do not get it.

i will post a message next when i get my computer back

    thanks - ash

  • Ash, Cool, I think I got it. That sounds like it might work better for a bigger net, since more of the lead is over your elbow.

I'll give it a try. Thanks,

    Mike

  • hey mate, i like ur technique of casting and its about time that someone actually knows how to throw a net on utube:)

i live in far north queensland and of corse you just have to know how to cast.

i again have a different technique.

i grab it a half way then i seperate the lead sinckers at half way. i put half over my elbow and grab the inside line. i like the way that u presented this technique

please write back to me saying wat u think about mine

    thanks.

  • That sounds similar to my way, but you are putting more lead over your elbow right? I'm not sure I totally understand, can you make a video, or maybe a step by step? This way works pretty easily, but it is hard to use with nets 12 foot and up. With bigger nets I prefer the Cuban style. Thanks for your comment. Mike

  • I guess this must be 12 feets nets,I'm using 14 feets nets, anyway you are good caster!!

  • Crikey, i didnt think throwing out a cast net was so complicated.

But great video anyways, easy to follow instructions and good quality.

  • the easyst way iv found so far is the way i was taught... puting the weights between my teeth but i think that only works for small nets

  • nah it works for the big nets too but when you put it between your teeth you have to split the net in half then throw

  • oh yeah and what westcoast net series has lead weight not plastic-coated steel.

  • West Coast Ballyhoo 12"

  • whats the best live bait to catch stripers

  • Chesapeake; EELS,SPOT

    New York; CLAMS, BUNKER

    Montauk; BUNKER, EELS, SMALL MACKREL.

  • Wow thanks! I used to use the same throw 2 years ago but I tried yesterday for the first time since and forgot how to throw it. Thanks to this video I remember now.

  • How big of a net can you throw this way?

  • At a pound and a half per foot,(a good net), A 10 footer is about the max. At one pound per foot,(a cheap net) A 14 footer is about max. If you are throwing a good 12 footer, this method will hurt you. When I use a 12 footer, I always use the Cuban style. 10 and below, I use the Old school Style. 1 cool trick: I have a 12 foot West Coast Ballyhoo net, it has super high quality netting and rigging, but HEAVY as HELL! It's heavier than I need, so I used big pruners to cut off every 3rd weight!

  • This removed 1/3rd of the weight, and it still opens great, without killing me. Just get the pruners as close to the lead line as possible without cutting it, then spread the lead weight apart. Just make sure your net has lead weights, some West coast nets have plastic-coated steel. And DON"T CUT YOURSELF! Also Big PVC pipe Ratchet cutters work too.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

  • Yeah I'm throwing an 11 footer with 1.6 lbs per foot, it's a bear, but I'm going to check out cuban style.

    Thanks for the help

  • I use my teeth, lol

  • hey man i saw your discussion with matthewsanchez and would like to say that it would be awesone if you would make a video on how you repair your cast nets because mine get torn all the time

  • I'll do it soon.

  • nice throwing! i never threw anything bigger than a 5' net

  • What song is that?

  • Lay me down, By my old band- Mama Tribe.

    Mike

  • Dude you can throw a net

  • Thanks Guys, Check out the Cast net Menhaden video to see it getting bait.

  • those are some very nice spreads you got there!

  • Way to go ,Mike. You Rock! That thing looks like a flhying saucer coming at the camera boat.
