  • @MichaelHansenFUN. no The Beatles didn't cover it.

  • That's right King689. On The Beatles Anthology documentary, McCartney also says Mohair Sam was one of The Beatles big songs of that time.

  • @DavidLPeel did they 'cover' it?

  • Yes Charlie Rich

  • Best song he ever did.

  • Awesome song - when it came out I thought it was just the hippest song of them all. Found the single for my jukebox at home, and I think this has the highest play of them all - and the Wurlitzer is loaded with some mighty competition from Atlantic, Motown... in some ways these hits that brushed the top 30 have lasted better than the Number Ones that have been thrashed to death over the past 40 years. Twin Spin... Ramsey Lewis "In Crowd.'

  • Try sitting perfectly STILL during this song. YOU CAN'T!

  • Great song and great voice. I can see why Elvis wanted to play this single over and over.

  • Actually, Charlie went Sun/Phillips International, Groove (RCA imprint), Smash, Hi, Epic, United Artists, Elektra, and finally Sire. This was his 1st single for Smash, making the top 25 (his only hit until then was "Lonely Weekends"). This became his last Hot 100 hit until "Behind Closed Doors" in 1973 (though "July 12,1939," 1970, also made the chart). This was just like anything else he did; a lot of feeling and great quality! R.I.P. 12/14/32-7/25/95. Oh, someone has never heard of Mohair Sam.

  • Elvis dug it.

  • @hnksnw That's probably true. Elvis played Mohair Sam the whole evening on his jukebox when The Beatles visited him in 1965.

  • @robin14669 good one-its in a book? i had this record as a child...

  • Charlie Rich was just too versatile to be pigeonholed into one style of music...the man could do it all......better yet hiswife put it this way..."Don't you dare call him country"!!!!!!

  • i have a weird story about this

isnt Charlie Rich supposed to be a country performer

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen Not at the time. He was a rockabilly artist with Sun Records.

  • @John1948TwoC True. But he'd left Sun for Smash when he cut this.

  • @MrDagwoodBumstead Yes, that's right. The first single for Smash was "Mohair Sam," an R&B-inflected novelty-rock number, and it became a Top 30 pop hit. Then he moved to Hi Records where he did some soul and some country. I think he really made the jump to country when he signed with Epic Records in 1967, There was a huge amount over crossover in the early days of rock / rockabilly so it's very hard to pin down.

  • @John1948TwoC He also did a version of Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" for RCA's Groove subsidiary.

  • @John1948TwoC I had a copy of this with LITTLE GREEN APPLES on the other side by another artist...

  • Charlie Rich-----The Silver Fox ------ before he went silver.

  • I had to look this up because Paul McCartney said this was the song Elvis was playing on his bass when the Beatles met him for the first time. Never heard this one before. Cool song!

  • @King689 me too.

  • @King689 This was all over the radio in 1965. I did not hear about Charlie Rich until I got into high school and heard his biggist hit "The most Beautiful girl"

  • @King689 thats exactly why i came here as well!

  • @King689 I think the Beatles copied this bass line in one of their songs.

  • We all wanted to be Mohair Sam. - - - even though we had no idea what mohair was...

  • How many remember when Charlie Rich hit the top 40 pop charts with this song in the mid 60's? Thank You so much for sharing this recording .... been years since I last heard it!

  • I love this song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great Song From Charlie and Thanks for Posting !
