I personally find the American Version better, but I think it's only that way because of all that time it spent being polished in the UK. I mean the first few episodes were pretty bad, but as time went on and the games got better, so did the show. If the show started in the US then moved over to the UK, then the UK version would probably be better with the first few American seasons looking bad.
Regarding the US vs. British WLIIA argument: I think it's pointless to argue (and in some cases insult) over which show is better. The British is the original concept with the US is the adaptation best thought suited for American audiences/standards. We're each going to have our favorites and opinions on which is the better show. All of us have a right to our opinion. While none have the right to say someone else's opinion is wrong. Let's just try to agree that WLIIA as a whole is hysterical
@neocelestia You're absolutely right. I don't think there is anyone better than the other, I like the American one for the childish fun and games approach of it, while the British often is more witty and dry (which I find hilarious). Arguing won't change a thing so if there is one show that is not your taste, then don't go watch it on youtube and whine about what you get to see.
Where can I find the one where Clive was looking for a nursury rhyme, and someone screamed out "Lesbians." They ended up going with Little Miss Muffet, but they made various lesbian references in the game.
Looking at both series i can tell YOU that you have other issues to deal with."Silly ones"? It's comedy you gibbering idiot. As for your comment that Americans only find physical humor funny, why don't you ask your countrymen about Benny Hill, Are You Being Served, The Carry On series, etc. As for the one trick pony bs, tell how does it feel to have eyesight and still be blind?
The actual humor is the same in both shows, nobody cares who the host is. I doubt you've even watched much of the US version, as you refer to Wayne as 'amateurish'.
The US show ran from 1998 to 2006, but the episodes that aired from 2005 on were old footage from previously unaired stuff. So, it could also be true to say it ran from 1998 to 2004.
If I recall correctly, the most recent recordings of the American version of Whose Line was November 2001. They taped years worth of stuff in advance.
I think this sketch perfectly illustrates the differences between US and UK humour (at least in terms of WLIIA). Ryan and Colin make use of their manic energy, physical presence and over-exaggerate their movements, taking them to a hyperactive comedic level. Stephen and Josie, meanwhile, focus on character, wordplay and irony. Nothing "good" or "bad" about either approach - just different.
Except of course, in the UK series, the audience doesn't whoop every time someone alludes to sexuality :)
Great points lordhaku - plus back in the golden Ch4 days of UK WL, a team player could also swear if they chose to, without fear of being beeped out or censored. Stephen Fry saying "get your hand of my fucking knee!" is simply hilarious. But this would never have been allowed on the US show.
eh, it would just be censored. the guys purposely cursed sometimes on the us version. it's not like you dont know what they're saying though. all good. personally i think a pure comic can be just as funny without saying anything like that. colin and ryan are both naturally very expessive and energetic, and often times they dont even have to talk to be funny, so it works for them. lordhaku had a great point between us & uk comedy here. though it's not always the case of course. i enjoy both ^_^
the uk audience can be just as whoopy as the us audience sometimes. i'm sure actually being in the audience is a very different feeling that watching from a screen. can't blame them. *sigh* i wish they'd have a whose line reunion with everyone from both versions. that'd be awesome :D
In my opinion i think it was steven that screamed but ryan opened his mouth as if to say oh god, and just after the scream steven looks like he is laughing. its sounds like steven too, it would have been better if it was ryan tho haha :)
I was only replying to your comment, as you did his -- "Hi stagneabt- what a stupid thing to say considering ... etc." I admit that I pounced on what you said in an overreactionary way and I apologize, I've just gotten annoyed with the cashed reply to idiotic comments about the US show being better, being the equally cashed "well it started in UK! ... blah blah." And also, I admit it's very easy to forget your manners on YouTube. You're right, it does make sense, and I'm sorry.
if you want to leave him with a scalding and bitter retort, you have to write a comment as a reply to his, otherwise he won't read it. however, my point is that yours is irrelevent. Just because the US show came from the UK show, it's not automatically worse than its predecessor-it's all opinion and preference. besides, what in the US didn't at some point come from the UK? and "advanced?" what do you even mean? ok, you prefer the english one, thats the only thing you said that makes sense.
really? hm, I don't completely agree. I think that in certain games yes, it's clear that they're grabbing for easy laughs, but with Colin especially, there are times when I'm just in awe of his acting. Perhaps Ryan was sharper in the UK show, but he and Colin still maintain such a wicked chemistry and do so well together - I think the overall hype of the US show might detract a little, but their performances, at least in my opinion, are still great. i know what you mean though.
i love this clip and is most probably my fave out of the UK version of the show as i prefer the US version. i love Ryan Stiles & Colin Mocherie. "I used the Cat" that is most probably the highlight of the whole clip.
haha, moron, the US Version overused Colin and Ryan, and Drew Carey was a horribly unfunny presenter and his segments were always terrible, and the audience laughed at every tiny thing and made the whole thing horribly unwatchable
it's true that Clive is perhaps wittier than Drew, but I do favor Drew as the presenter because he allows the actors to do a better job half the time, i think. Clive has a tendency to cut them off too soon or reveal answers to things theyre supposed to guess, etc, and put a damper on the comedic timing of most of the games. As for Colin and Ryan, yes, they were the regulars, but you HAVE to admit that they are fantastic on the show. They are simply funny.
"This show would suck if it weren't for Ryan and Colin" EXCUSE me? The US version (and Ryan and Colin's big showbiz break) wouldn't even EXIST without the original UK version!!!
Can your tiny brain even understand that basic fact? Obviously not.
hey, none of that now-no one's arguing that. besides, that makes no difference either way. even if ryan and colin hadnt gone on to a US version, it in no way negates the fact that they shined in the UK version-they did. They're hilarious in both. the guy just doesn't like the UK version as much, doesn't mean he has a tiny brain. I mean, I love british humor, but I do prefer the US show b/c I think the acting is often better, not because my tiny brain cant understand that basic fact.
Do you think that maybe that cat thing was where Colin got the whole "The Cat" bit in the improbable mission in the us version. Maybe not conciously though. Just a thought!

Well, on the original Radio Episodes, Stephen Fry and John Sessions were the Regulars, although I've never actually heard them. I do agree that Fry should have been on the TV Version more. He's so much fun. :)
xxxbelindamayxxx, I have annual calendars within my personal psyche (mind, if you're a bit confused). I am actually a beholder of useless information. For example, if you were to give me your date of birth, the day, month and year, I could work out what day of the week you were born on in a maximum of about 2 minutes.
xxxbelindamayxxx, I have no problem whatsoever with explaining things like this to anyone. It's just me doing what I do and it's nice to know that there's someone around about my age from my country, who I can talk to about these things. I, myself, am from England and am 17 on the 16th of July 2008. I was born on a Tuesday. And, who keeps "dissing" my comments? Am I that despised on youtube? Someone explain.
Well, it is and it isn't. On the plus side it is because it's something that not many people can do. On the minus side, everyone hates it... could it be jealousy probably? I don't know, but anyway, it's a useless talent I just happen to have. I can also spell out any word or name in numbers based on where the letters come in the alphabet - another pointless talent.
I am not autistic. Saying that, you are basically referring to me as mentally retarded. Calling me autistic, you mean I am stupid - wrong! I'm bright enough to get onto the BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science at College - which isn't easy, I can tell you!
I'm not calling them stupid. I'm saying that you are implying that I am stupid. And, of course, when you say autistic to me, with regards to the above comment, you are basically implying that I am stupid and horrible... "they are lovely... well some". Doesn't mean me. I'm not autistic. I hope you mean something else, that isn't referring to autism.
See, this is why I fear YouTube. It's like escalation central.
Dear, you're not autistic nor stupid. You are however trying to draw unnecessary focus upon yourself by pulling off those birth date wheelies while no one asked for them.
You clearly wanted attention, so it's rather silly to complain that it's the bad kind.
Not always. There are some on my course who have only got on them because they having to re-do their GCSE's. Some others did actually apply for the BTEC but didn't get the required grades so they have to do a First Diploma. It must be different in Crewe, that's where I go.
"Gotta love Stephen Fry," I agree. Isn't he adorable? Mind you, so are Colin and Ryan. I'll tell you what would be a good episode: in order of age - Paul Merton, Tuesday the 9th of July 1957; Stephen Fry, Saturday the 24th of August 1957; Colin Mochrie, Saturday the 30th of November 1957 and Ryan Stiles, Wednesday the 22nd of April 1959. Let me know if you agree.
I personally find the American Version better, but I think it's only that way because of all that time it spent being polished in the UK. I mean the first few episodes were pretty bad, but as time went on and the games got better, so did the show. If the show started in the US then moved over to the UK, then the UK version would probably be better with the first few American seasons looking bad.

rancid4eva 4 years ago 15
Agreed. it's so sad Stephen didn't do more episodes.
droog69 4 years ago 11
Yeah, he is really helarious.
And absolutly great in impro.
Would love to see him more doing that!

Well, on the original Radio Episodes, Stephen Fry and John Sessions were the Regulars, although I've never actually heard them. I do agree that Fry should have been on the TV Version more. He's so much fun. :)

Dave only has the rights to series 5-8 and this is series 9 so unless they get the rights to it, they won't show it.

Nothing. This was from before Drew was on the show. The guy at the desk is Clive Anderson.

Now that's a dream team: Stephen, Josie, Ryan, and Colin! This is probably the best thing I love about the UK Whose line.

xxxbelindamayxxx, I have annual calendars within my personal psyche (mind, if you're a bit confused). I am actually a beholder of useless information. For example, if you were to give me your date of birth, the day, month and year, I could work out what day of the week you were born on in a maximum of about 2 minutes.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
cool. Thanks for explaining, I was a bit confused
xxxbelindamayxxx 4 years ago
xxxbelindamayxxx, I have no problem whatsoever with explaining things like this to anyone. Someone explain.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
i think it's a great thing you can be able to work out the day somone was born in like 2 min.
smelypenny 4 years ago
Well, it is and it isn't. On the plus side it is because it's something that not many people can do. On the minus side, everyone hates it... could it be jealousy probably? I don't know, but anyway, it's a useless talent I just happen to have. I can also spell out any word or name in numbers based on where the letters come in the alphabet - another pointless talent.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
basically your autistic ;p
cavemeister 4 years ago
I am not autistic. Saying that, you are basically referring to me as mentally retarded. Calling me autistic, you mean I am stupid - wrong! I'm bright enough to get onto the BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science at College - which isn't easy, I can tell you!
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
Autistic people are far from stupid. I know autistic people they are lovely..... well some
cavemeister 4 years ago 3
I'm not calling them stupid. I'm saying that you are implying that I am stupid. And, of course, when you say autistic to me, with regards to the above comment, you are basically implying that I am stupid and horrible... "they are lovely... well some". Doesn't mean me. I'm not autistic. I hope you mean something else, that isn't referring to autism.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
woah calm down dear it was only a comment. sheesh AND I JUST SAID AUTISTIC PEOPLE ARE FAR FROM STUPID SO DON'T SAY I IMPLYED THEY WERE :)
cavemeister 4 years ago
See, this is why I fear YouTube. It's like escalation central.
Dear, you're not autistic nor stupid. You are however trying to draw unnecessary focus upon yourself by pulling off those birth date wheelies while no one asked for them.
You clearly wanted attention, so it's rather silly to complain that it's the bad kind.
SterlingSaint 4 years ago 2
you replied to me not "mrspaulmertoniwish"
cavemeister 4 years ago
I'm not drawing attention to myself. I'm just giving some useless information people might like to know, thanks. Although, useless, you never know!
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
Really? I thought BTEC National Diplomas were dead easy to get onto.
phlupple 4 years ago
Not always. There are some on my course who have only got on them because they having to re-do their GCSE's. Some others did actually apply for the BTEC but didn't get the required grades so they have to do a First Diploma. It must be different in Crewe, that's where I go.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago
They are no harder or easier than A levels to gte on to, im doing a business one.
MattSharpe95th 4 years ago
"Gotta love Stephen Fry," I agree. Isn't he adorable? Mind you, so are Colin and Ryan. I'll tell you what would be a good episode: in order of age - Paul Merton, Tuesday the 9th of July 1957; Stephen Fry, Saturday the 24th of August 1957; Colin Mochrie, Saturday the 30th of November 1957 and Ryan Stiles, Wednesday the 22nd of April 1959. Let me know if you agree.
mrspaulmertoniwish 4 years ago 4
How the hell did you work out the EXACT day that they were born. I knew their dates of birth but i didn't know the actual DAYS
xxxbelindamayxxx 4 years ago
Spot-on, my friend.
