I doubt it. If you have played the piano and guitar for forty years, which I have, writing melodies to any lyrics instantly is actually very easy. Mine are only half decent which isn't good enough for a hit.
Writing classic songs on the other hand is incredibly difficult, you just have to be lucky. or in the case of Elton John, very very very lucky.
He was brought up using the chords to beautiful hymns, which partly explains how he can write such beautiful melodies.
@Via1tunes your not born gay stupid ass. your born male or female and sometimes both and depending on your parents if your black or white or whatever . the only thing you have to do is eat drink and die you dont have to have sex . So mr or miss science, sex is a choice your never born a killer or a child-molester, you chose to be
@Rorywalters : Actually, if you read any psychology book, you'll find that it's not just that cut and dry. Sure, there are those that choose that lifestyle for various reasons (it's cool, hip) but there is also evidence to suggest that some are born with genetics that make them feel like they are in the wrong body or might give them an attraction to the same sex. This would most likely be some kind of mental disorder if it weren't for society accepting homosexuality as "normal behavior".
@Siphonoglyph A man talks of speaking to a person up in the sky, an invisible person who seemingly follows him around and knows everything he does. A "person" capable of doing miraculous things.
Normally, this person would be considered suffering from delusions and mental instability. Yet, if you replace this invisible person with Jesus, its found to be completely acceptable.
I disagree with your last sentence; an abnormality is only considered a disorder if it causes severe stress for the subject in question. Homosexuality isn't a mental disorder because people who are gay do not suffer inherently due to their sexuality, but rather because of discrimination at the hands of others .
@Rorywalters Not to mention it should even matter what his choice as saying someone is bad because they're gay is like saying someones bad because they're jewish.
It's easy for things to build on themselves once they get started, the genius here is the first 5 or 6 chords he plays. He just instinctively and immediately starts off in the right direction. Amazing!
He did the same thing on the Parkinson show but for some reason it has been taken of youtube. Doe anybody knows where i can find this? That was brilliant to! Or could someone put it back on youtube?? Thank:)
@delightfuldipso No that one is not from the parkinson show. It was called: Influences and instant songwriting, as far as i can remember. It was a really cool song he played on the parkinson show in 2000. can't find it anywhere. To bad! Hope that still someone has it!
@delightfuldipso The oven song was on a programme on ITV's 'An audience With Elton John'.
His instantly witten song on Parkinson (BBC) was even more amazing. Parkinson was actually laughing he was so amazed. I think the over protective Beeb may have had it pulled , becaue it used to be on Youtube, which is quite disgusting as the BBC are paid for by the public and we should therefore own the copyright to all their programmes.
I love this. Probably one of his best performances! If you like real music, please visit my video, a cover of Elton John's Border Song. Please comment! Lets keep the good music alive! /watch?v=dPtXGmXPSU4

Clever but no genius IMHO. I bet he's done that party trick a thousand times over the years. Really simple chords under the cod-operetta twiddling.

Sir Elton John means the same for music as Albert Einstein for physics. A pure genius. And excellent sense of humor by the way

Being born with the wrong physical gender is essentially a "disorder", but sexuality is an entirely different thing.
