  • This is amazing! Levi Stubbs was peerless. This version really shows the gospel roots of Motown--so poignant. I already loved this song, but I now I can't get enough of it.

  • Beautiful, you can really hear the emotion without the music.

  • May he,and all of doowop singers, still here an not,RIP it should be like that now,it was the best.Really cool times:

  • Yeah their good

  • UNDERRATED as a singer: What the HELL" are these people talking about? Thinking about! This aint no "basket ball game! They think that the money of Elvis, Mick Jagger, means they were better?? They don't know nothing, but want to say something! The TOPS, THE TEMPS, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Roy Hamilton & all the rest were rated by the Gods. Not some tin eared mortal.

  • Simply magic. Levi Stubbs was so underrated as a singer/performer. A true professional who could have gone solo but remained true to his childhood friends. RIP, Levi

  • Your not alone. You are loved

  • So Beautiful..xx..

  • The Andantes' voices are hauntingly smooth..........

  • What a voice this man had. Fabulous Four Tops, simply the BEST male group of all time.

  • I was manager of a 47 person call center of what I like to call "my kids" half of them are fb family and every Saturday night I sit here and post MUSIC to my fb page. I post all motown music and give them a message. If you even just reach one person to educate them on this music you will have taught then more than you know. This music is about love, compassion, respect for each other. Things they will not learn listening to the so called "music" of today!

  • @knoxie152 Artists today have no clue of what real music is nor do they write it!

  • Help!!...I am a confirmed Motown addict, still discovering songs in the 2000's!

  • what a voice, what a song, what an era, i so want to go back in time and live through the motown period.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • There's no beatitude for the lonesome. The BOOK don't say they're blessed."_Street preacher from MIDNIGHT COWBOY

  • just pure magic!

  • what 5 jerks did not like this song ??? levi was amazing and thank you

  • @MegaPoland123 They are the ones who tried out for a spot in The Four Tops, but didn't make the cut.

  • MOST MOTOWN SONGS LIKE THIS REMINDS ME OF MY HUSBAND...HE'S FROM DETROIT AND KNEW ALOT OF THESE GUYS..RIP LEVI STUBBS

  • God Bless the Voice .....He's now in Gods Choir .....Rip Mr Stubbs

  • This is the definition of True Talent ...... No computerized technical help!

Nothing can compare! Once again I thank you for posting it

  • I met my husband when this song first came out. He's now deceased. :(

  • such a gift !! THANK YOU...

  • This is one of the most beautiful ballads the Tops ever made..It's a really touching song!

  • Top This !

  • hi! thanks for the comment and you have great taste in music!! My husband is a musician(he is 64 and i am 63)and he backed up and played with some of the older soul singers like ben e. king, johnny winters, the shirelles and some others) and is now chair of the fine arts department and music professor at a local college here. i played classical violin until college and i now sound like a first grader. my husband wanted me to tell you he loved this post!! thanks again for posting!!!!!

  • THANK YOU, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL BRINGS TEARS THIS ERA IN MUSIC IS ONE OF KIND THESE PEOPLE HAD NATURAL GOD GIVEN TALENT. AS A CHILD 3 YEARS OLD I REMEMBER MY MOTHER PLAYING THESE SONGS. I WAS BORN IN 1964 AND I WISH I WERE BORN A LITTLE EARLIER TO ENJOY THE THESE GROUPS, THE CONCERTS, DANCES, AND EVEN FALLING IN LOVE. OR JUST HAVING THE ILLUSION YOUR IN LOVE WHEN LISTENING WOW WHAT AN ERA TODAY MY CHILDREN DON'T HAVE THE APPRECIATION FOR THESE WONDERFUL YEARS. THANK YOU

  • Singing acapella no doubt displays and let's you hear the real quality in a singer's voice without the music to carry to it.

  • If man had never made an instrument, voice alone would have been enough to communicate music. This is proof of it.

  • wow! thats all i can say

  • Simply AMAZING. Furthermore, remember that analog technology had just been introduced a few years earlier, and many recordings were still were still made using true Old School "linear" technology. What this means is that the ENTIRE group had to sing this song perfectly, from start to finish, in ONE TAKE and with no mistakes, or else they'd have to start over from the beginning.

Very few in today's music scene can sing a capella with this type of quality, much less get it 100% right in 1 take.

  • Of all the classic soul singers only MarvinJunior of the Dells could come close to Levi's pipes and he didn't have Levi's range but more power. I tell people all the time that of all the Mowton Singers Levi could've sung opera with ease had he chosen to. Without a doubt.

    Worf

  • My favorite all time Tops song of their many, many great tunes, and hearing it acapella just made it more precious. Thanks for this posting of one of music's most classic voices, and thank you once again, Levi.

  • this is the vocal track, but can pass for acapella because of all the harmony. This is to showcase their harmony and great lead by Levi Stubbs. So it is an acapella in that sense, just enjoy the music, and stop talking about acapella this or acapella that

  • So pure and innocent, So romantic and honest. I wish lyrics these days were clean and sensative like they were back then, they left something for the imagination and a song from that era could really make your heart pitter patter for sombody. When I hear the Four Tops my heart pitter patters.

  • People cannot sing like this anymore. Why??? Thanks so much for posting such a beautiful tribute to Levi B. This video clearly demonstrates how great he is. Rest in Peace Brother. Amen.

  • WOW HE DIED THE SAME YEAR AND MONTH AS MY SOULMATE......MY LOVE DIED ON THE 6TH OF OCTOBER.....WHICH IS ALSO MY BDAY MONTH....VERY SAD

  • beautiful

  • Happy 75th Birthday, Levi ! (June 6th)

  • Look, I love the Tops, but this is not an a' Capella version. This is a studio track with the background singers and the Tops on3 different tracks without the music

  • r u kidding me - this talent is so pure - it is on another planet - rip levi stubbs -

  • Amazing, never heard this before. Song of all songs and the one of the greatest singers that has ever been. Thank you for the privilege of hearing this version

  • WOW!..What a voice!...what a singer!! Just so beautiful. This song always gives me the chills. Thank you Levi..you was a Supremo of a singer!!

  • Wonderful.

  • Amazing, he didn't say a word about revenge, killin, B's & H's. Bring Soul Music back. It raised ppl up OUTTA the gutter, it didn't celebrate it. Bless you , Levi!

  • Further proof that Levi Stubbs is in the top echelon of great lead singers from that era. I know a lot of people are late to the party, as far as discovering him, but better late than never.

  • I am - a fan forever. I miss my friends! NOw Ow i know...what it means to be lonley. Jesus is Christ!

  • ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And our poor youth...Subjected to today's violent and vulgar "rap crap"!

  • @mrob75 A MILLION THUMBS UP!

    From a Detroiter

  • oh my! this is so good it hurts!

  • That is Awesome, nothing else to say

  • OMGosh, what a magnificent voice. RIP Levi. WE miss you.

  • awesome, rip levi.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Man, what a voice. R.I.P Levi.xx

  • I miss my friends!

  • YES I DO KNOW THE HURT AND PAIN.....SEEMS LIKE THE NIGHT WILL NEVER END...I'M WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO BRING MY NIGHT INTO DAY.

  • I'am a big Temps fan from back in the day. But some years ago the tops opened for them, and were the better group. Ask the lonley my all time fav. Levi & the fellas still put that swelling in my heart. Wow , thanks

  • This is my anthem.

  • This and the instrumental tracks version are must listens for anyone interested in the art of pop music production.

  • Four Tops made live more real, more deep , more rich and more spiritual. God Blessed their music!

  • We all know Levi had a strong and beautiful voice, but without the music i realize just how good the Tops are singing backup for Levi.

  • @theintruder42 The Tops and Andantes on background vocals.

  • Thank you for the trip down memory lane.. they just dont make them like this anymore..

  • for deweydell They never do!

    merlymush

  • Wow, no kidding about the chills. That is amazing. No one is singing like that today.

  • Absolutely stunning acapella version by Levi....to hear this I wish more material had been recorded with Levi where his voice came out so strong and compelling. WOW !!

  • @panhandleshagclub Check out my channel, there's plenty of this material alot of people, unfortunately have never heard!!

  • Brings me to tears. Thanks for posting this beautiful version...

  • What a beautiful voice. He was a role model for Teddy Pendergrass!

  • it's me again. i'm playing this for my husband who just got home from work as a music professor and chair of the fine art's department at st. phillip's college. i am 62 and he is 63. in his many years as a musician{sax, flute, keyboard, singer}he has done backup, opened up for and played with some great soul singers and groups. he also was with edgar winter for a while. he is just blown away by this version of this song. we think this is the best acapella ever. my husband thanx you too!!!!

  • @dogcat126

You are both so welcome, I'm just really pleased that you enjoy the video. Levi Stubbs was amazing and the Four Tops also.

    Merry Christmas to you both

    Debz

  • @esmereldatitswallop > Levi Stubbs WAS amazing ! His voice penetrated my soul ! Four Tops Fourever !!!!

  • @dogcat126 m-.m-m...have Mercy! Thanku I remember growing up in St. Louis and hearing the acapella singers under the street lamps in the summer. Excitement ruled the day as we wondered if Kenny and 'nem would sing that nite. The neighborhood would quiet down @ about 10p..the porch lites turned off and we would listen in silence for the concert to start.. You would hear those first notes..out -of -this- world harmonies and be carried to another world. Those were the days (nites).

  • @kamillianne THANK FOR THE FLASHBACKS WHAT YOU DESCRIBE I'VE ONLY SEEN ON TV.. ON THE STREET CORNER ..UNDER THE STREET LAMP BY THE EXITS ..

  • @dogcat126 I generally prefer Smokey, Marvin, and the Tempts to the Tops, but this song, with Levi's gut bucket soul laments counterpointed by the high end harmonies, really gets next to me. It has a haunting quality that taps something universal in the human experience (loss), and makes us feel less lonesome about it. This material is a little before my time, but I will sample it with my own students in Personality Theories, along with Coltrane, Hendrix, Billie, et al. You have good taste!

  • oh, thanks for posting!!!!! they were sososo great. this is really beautiful!

  • Wow My alltime favorite male singer of alltime the Late great Levi Stubbs, there will never be another like him his voice was a gift from God.

  • I think it was Smokey Robinson said that if you can take Levi Stubb's voice and make it into a picture, it would hang in the finest museum in Europe. I agree.

  • 10/24/10 ... Wow1 My favorite group of the 6os absolutly the best and they will never be matched!

  • The music to this song doe snot do justice these masterful vocals.

  • The Four Tops are so wrapped up in the joy of my high school dancing experiences and 45rpm listening experiences. We did appreciate them...and love them. We danced our hearts out to their music. I still don't think we knew the talented greatness that surrounded us back then. We do now! Thank you so much! xxx, ooo

  • I was lucky to see The Tops 4 times, and they never failed to amaze, what a voice Levi had, there will never be another group like these,it was a sad day when the world lost Levi

  • A very powerful voice. He could sing!!!!!

  • Wow! Levi, the Tops and the Andantes. It does not get any better.

  • It doesn't get any better.....

  • Not only the best singer to come out of Motown, one of the best singers period.

  • HOLY SHIT thats a voice

  • My very first concert at the Forum in Inglewood. I was 14. My boyfriend took me. He is now my husband. Our song is Can't help myself (SugarPie, Honeybunch). This group is one of the best ever.

  • This is real singing....I had not heard this version and it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I'm amost speechless...they were so good! Nothing synthetic and phony about this group. One of my favs.

  • No changes in lead singers. No changes in back up vocalist. Only sickness and death could change the personal of the FOUR TOPS. No Motown group exemplified unity and brotherhood like The Four Tops

  • such power and grace. so it was with Levi. this is my mood right now. my wife of 35 years died last month. we're both from Detroit. we saw the Tops back in the day at the Michigan Palace downtown. right now, im the lonliest one you'll see. i lost a love i'll never regain.

  • My deepest, heart-felt sympathies to you. I know no words can ease the pain of loss. If there is any consolation to be found, believe she is in a better place, protected from the ills of this world, waiting patiently for you, a smile on her face and love in her heart. For now, as long as you keep her in your heart she will always be there. Peace.

  • AND I THANK YOU.

  • @tenkgent I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I hope you are doing at least some better than when you posted this one year ago.

  • What a beautiful version of that great classic song! These guys really had the right sound for the 1960's & beyond. Few groups today can approach them in quality or in the number of hits produced...

  • Levi Stubbs had a stroke in 2000, never performing again after that. Earth's loss is Heaven's gain, and the Heavenly Choir became soulful on October 17, 2008.
