  • Wow one step at a time we are figuring out that we a just really smart monkeys. That's funny.

  • I agree, they should make shoes with super thin rubber or something on the bottom because you cant go barefoot at school

  • @gr4ntster They do! There called[ Vibram Five Fingers ]. Check them out they are sweet.

  • Somebody should make socks with rough soles so your feet get toughened walking around in what looks normal shoes (when you have to wear them).

  • if you try this on the k2 then im impressed :D

  • now in the winter

  • Your ankles look really strong and stable. Kudos!

  • u r modern day hobbits. i salute u.

  • Im always barefooted around the house and I hate shoes but I have to wear them. I hiked once barefoot and it feels so much better, more grip and energy

  • what a sound

  • @barefooted The best part about Summiting Whitney - well besides that you've successfully Sumitted Whitney - are Dougs pancakes at the Portal Store. I can't decide between his pancakes the day before, or a beer and a burger on the way down. I always times it to get down before the Portal Store closes. Nothing beats it!

  • how do you deal with sharp stones?

  • dudddeeeee, i'd be dying!!!! you see all those rocks they walked on!?

  • @Nuggetams once you get used to not wearing shoes, it is actually preferable to go without them

  • @randomvideosn0where how long does it take to get use to it???

  • @Nuggetams about a month...just take it slow, start out by going around the block and work your way up

  • I climbed it three days ago, but there was some snow. Maybe that's why i didnt see any barefoot hikers :P Did anyone else read about the people who got lost and those who got stuck there?

  • got blisters?

  • it's not hard to hike barefoot... just takes a little time to tuff up the feet first...

  • First worlders think this is novel while most of the third world is forced to live without shoes

  • oh , that looks like SO much fun ! I have't done anything like that in years .

  • Interesting

  • Cool video.

  • Why does every hiking video i see need to have some kind of deliverance type of banjo music playing in the background. Is this seriously the only music backpacking makes us think of?

  • @iamtheryan because people tend to be sheep and they copy everything they see and hear.

  • Barefoot Ted has calves like Popeye. (Not a bad thing)

  • @LuckyPsion

If you ran ultra's in barefeet you would have popeye calves too.

  • I am guessing after a while the bottom of your feet must have developed a tough exterior, right? ...is this true?

  • Have you ever seen/tried Vibram five fingers? I know its not the same, but I guess it would be a transition towards barefooting...

  • @ChanimalCrackers I'm going to try it in Vibrams Fivefingers at the end of July. I'll let you know how it goes. I've never barefoot hiked before, but I wear sandals a lot and have done some minor trail running barefoot. Certainly not an expert at going barefoot.

  • just wondering what inspired you to start barefooting different things? And what has happened to the bottom of your feet? Im assuming they dont feel much pain or cold/heat?

  • Novel idea, you define the term "kickin' it old-school"

  • I've hiked up Whitney three times, but I would never do it barefooted! You've got some tough feet!!!

  • haha wow. i just came back from summit to mt whitney. first time hiking and i did it!! wasnt too hard at all. very worth it

  • I think I saw some hiking boots sticking out of his pack. Try doing that totally nude.

  • Quite a few people used to do that in the Swiss Alps, but it's banned now.

  • @steveo72990 banned? That is just impossible to believe. Must have been a lot of folks getting themselves in danger? But banned seems really harsh and restrictive. Hmm.

  • @barefootted

I guess I should have indicated that my comment was in reply to dowhatyoufear's comment about people hiking nude in the Swiss Alps, which has been banned. You can hike barefoot there if you feel like it.

  • Oh, got it. I did read about that. Thanks for the clarification.

  • @dowhatyoufear i didn't see any hiking boots but he could have had some KSO Treks in his backpack

  • @ChildSlayer on his blog he said that he came back down in Vibram Fivefingers. Didn't say which one.

  • is it ok to run bare foot on the treadmill?

  • yea, its ok to run barefoot anywhere

  • I've actually found that treadmills aren't great for bare footing since the moving surface can rub the foot as the foot lands, which can cause hot spots and blisters. As long as the treadmill isn't running too fast for you, it shouldn't be too bad though.

  • i'm so jealous. i love barefooting, but the only place to go is a creek behind my property...and i'm only 16 so that makes travel almost impossible!

  • wow!!! thats cool! i never seen barefoot hiking ! i've been hiking in the mountains in the yosemite but never like this!

  • nice. I've been hiking barefoot for years...it's so much better than wearing shoes!

  • it is so nice to see that I'm not the only barefoot adventurer in north America...

  • I think it is a growing trend...as people reconnect to their feet and the potential that exists within themselves.

  • You know what? I'm 43 and just started discovering barefooting. I went a week ago, hiking, all over my town and the pavement was hot and I got a blister right in the metatarsal- that area between the toes and the ball of my feet, and it was sensitive for awhile, but now they're better. I went jogging 3 miles today and it felt great, but I got a little blister on my toe. I don't care, cause I know my feet will toughen up. But, I really like it and I'm getting good at it. :)

  • Howdy ...nice vid.

A quicky question; can you get the same benefits from using 'vibram fivefingers'...? I run along cliff paths in Cornwall - usually in trainers - I don't want to go bearfoot, but like the idea of the 'vibrams'. Also, do you not twist/sprain your ankles/feet often - if no, how do you avoid this happening??

  • Yes, the Vibram FiveFingers are great hiking shoes. Great grip and great for balance...think of the sherpas on Everest...often barefoot.

Twisted ankles are far more likely in a boot or shoe with a heel.

    BFT

  • I agree. I've never twisted my ankle while barefoot...it has only happened while wearing shoes. Also, going barefoot makes your ankles and several muscles in your legs and feet stronger. Shoes cause atrophy, injury, and skin problems (feet should not be soft and easy to damage). Feet also help to cool your body in hot weather...wearing shoes makes the whole body uncomfortable as a result.

  • an intelligent post on youtube, rare, but appreciated, thanks.

  • Ya, way to go BFT! Livin life. I hope to have calves as strong as yours one day! God speed!

  • incredible. your nuts. But in a good way don't take it the wrong way. Cheers bro.

  • hey BFT, obviously you're feet and calves are super strong but do you think that this is from running in general or go you think there is more growth with the barefooted style? thx

    -Zach

  • Good question.

I do think that it is a combination of genetics, training and growth. Naturally, if you go barefoot, your feet and legs are going to get stronger. At least that is what I have found.

    BFT

  • By the way, the soundtrack that you hear repeated ad nauseum is something I made with Apple's Soundtrack software.

  • great stuff guys...!
