tweedlededeedee - speak for yourself. i saw springsteen three times in the late 70's and once in 84. i have never seen him since. once he made the "nebraska" album , for me it was over. bruce is about the futility of being the underdog and his fame as a rocker contrasted with his loneliness and longing for those pissed on by the "meanness in this world".
After seeing him a few times and having most of his albums, the album version of this song always takes me from surprise. It's so quiet compared to his live versions, so laid back, and so raw. It's clear to see how he takes this song and amplifies it up to the proportions you see on stage.
I'd say this album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and Born to Run are the three best sets of songwriting he's ever done (in no particular order). Born to Run's more anthemic, Darkness is more raw and angry, but Nebraska is probably his best storytelling. This song, Atlantic City, Nebraska, Reason to Believe, My Father's House, Highway Patrolman...there really isn't a bad song on the album.
I totally agree, powerful, but in a subtle way.Power is in the quality of the music, and this whole album is incredible,so laid back..It sounds like Bruce playing in his house,or something, and he produces one of the best ever albums, stripped to bare acoustic excellence by a genius of rock
@cudafishx As you say, his best album. My god it's like watching a film, his lyrical peak, the songs intertwine, the mood changes... The watermark of his career, IMHO.

@MrBirchmoor33 And it sounds like a beautiful Martin guitar throughout the whole record, too.

@ GreenGreenGrasOfHome I'll give you that! Nebraska IS a masterpiece! The best of his solo, acoustic albums...

"The auto plant in Mahwah" was a real place. It was a Ford Motor Company assembly plant in Mahwah, New Jersey that opened in 1953 and closed in 1980.

@MrUnidyne Thanks, writers usually write what surrounds them, but 1980 is just to much, great writer of the struggles in this world!

I guess you like it. I think "powerful" is the right word to discribe it. Do you know the whole "Nebraska" album?
