No sir, this is not a violin. The fingerboard scale is completely different, the tuning is completely different, and it has frets. That classifies it as completely different instrument. Just because Jimmy Page took a bow to a guitar in the 60's doesn't all of a sudden make his guitar a violin because its being bowed. The gentleman that created this instrument in the 80's, I personally know and he never called it a violin either.
your incorrect it is an electric violin if you research them they are completly experimental and sometimes come with extra string, frets, and can be tuned differntly jsut like guitars can. they ares till violins, thats liek saying because a 12 string guitar has more then 6 strings it isnt a guitar, or the same with slide, thats are aloud to be differnt
No it's not even remotely close to the same comparison as a 6 string guitar versus a 12 string guitar. In order to be apart of the violin family, the instrument MUST NOT have any frets of any like or kind. That is the most basic rule to designating the violin family of instruments. This instrument can't even pass that first most basic rule and there are many many others. Being electric, has nothing to do with it. Having frets does.
Furthermore, I've been involved with violin making and playing for twice as long as your age and I always get a kick out of someone trying to correct me such as yourself.
You're working with a very american classification. The fact of the matter is the the violin is classified on a modern stance by these:
Range
Bowed Instrument
Also, range in the modern eyes is usually something that is not a defining characteristic. The classification system used international is called Hornbostel-Sachs which has nothing to do with specific names of instruments but there true classification. Also the violin came out of a larger family including the viol and viola-de-gamba.
Not to step into it, but frets are not the main classifier. I play a 16.5" Viola and Woods **violins** is having a custom 6 string made for me. Their are string instruments that have fret's on the fingerboard. Such as the Viol.
Personally I don't care what people call it. I only hope they enjoy what we can do with it.
No, frets aren't the ONLY classifier. The tuning is another classifier. Just because its shaped like a violin, which this isn't, and you use a bow doesn't mean its a violin.
It always seems to be people of an impoverished country or the poor of the world that know it all. That must be the reason some don't develop and just stay stagnant.
Being stagnant and stating a fact that this is not a violin, have nothing to do with one another. You don't have a clue what you are even talking about. How bout you shut your fat face.
Now your not being nice, But because I want to understand from such a pro builder as yourself.... If I get a 5 string Viper (you can get them between 4 and 7 strings), and I tune it in 5ths (which most do) to the same harmonics as the Violin and Viola (Viola's C,Shared G,Shared D,Shared A,Violins E) and I don't get the frets, wouldn't you classify it as an electric violin?
AWESOME! I love how his passion works the crowd. With the current state of the music industry and the number of manufactured artists, it is great to see such musicianship in the marketplace!

That's not true. Frets have been an early element of the violin family with the violin precursors such as versions of the Rebab and Rebec.

That's not a violin. Its not even tuned like one.

no matter what you say, that thing is a violin that wants to be a guitar.

No matter what I say? lol. I'm a luthier and you're telling me what an instrument is called?

You speak of staying stagnant and you are too narrow minded to accept an unconventional experimental design for a violin? Hypocrite.
