Because northern han were mixed with northern tribes and northern ethnics during the long time war and chaos. That is one of the reasons why western ppl call official chinese mandarin, which represents Manchurian official language. One example is, for some ancient poems, it's quite hard to get the rhyme with mandarin, but very easy with Cantonese and other southern dialects

@chonkhongduocnick the second mistake u made is the concept of china and chinese. To many western ppl, Chinese only means Han, which is soooo wrong. Chinese(華夏) includes many ethnics, like Zhang i just mentioned above, and Han is only one of them (the biggest one though). Thus, it's quite stupid to say YUE or Zhuang is not Chinese. And China, which is the name of a country, how can u say hongkong, a city in this country, is not China's? It's as absurd as to say Hawaii isnot USA's

@chonkhongduocnick NOT IS, but WAS part of China, and they ARE NOT, but they WERE Chinese, in Qin n Han dynasty at least. Then they became tributary. And in Ming dynasty, again, China ruled Viet. In Qing, Viet became tributary again until French conquered Viet. That is why vietnamese use alphabet, if think, because they had no time to creat their own characters. And if u look the photos of vietnamese officers which was taken in 19s, u can c it's the same as officer uniform in Ming dynasty

While US based agencies each have their policical leanings and bias towards the left or right wing of goverment, none are "goverment run" unlike the government run/controlled news agencies in China such as Xinhua for example. They control which topics could potentially cause poltical unrest which is basically any story that they do not like or does not portray China in a perfect light.
