Hi Rob, your tutorial worked, i had to put in the password to open my files, but after i closed it, my password wasnt needed anymore and it was back to being opened by anyone. I checked that no 'save password' or anything was ticked
Question. if someone gets on your computer and say, they go to SPOTLIGHT and they search the entire mac for jpeg photos. Will all your photos still show up? Basically my question is, does Spotlight give them a preview of files even if they are stored in your protected folder?
mmm....but after you open it once with the password and close it, you can open it without the password from then on. How do you make it so you have to enter the password every time to access the file?
Thanks for trying robdavie, but anyone with admin privileges can change the permission to "read and write for all" any anyone using the computer can open it without the specific password.
i'm just in the middle of changing a large file into an image etc, etc... Umm, when its done (i changed the setting before hand to "read/write") so that means i will still be able to add files onto image file, no?
i got it to work, but then i tried "being my brother" and i typed in wrong passwords. after the third try, the file opened itself! how do you fix that?
what are you supposed to do with the unencrypted folder? Will people not have access to the folder that's not encrypted? If i delete the unencrypted folder, will it affect the files in the disk image?
@michelespiritlevel hey if you want to change the icons i recommend candy bar which lets you change the icons for applications files and documents get back to me if you need any more help
i did it but i need it that when it is even open on the desktop to still have the password box up, that's what i thought this meant that every time you click on it the password box would come up and ask you to put the password in, not just when your opening the disk image,
thank you so much, this was perfect, easy to follow, although a bit fast, didn't realize u'd started until you were on disk utility! :p thanks a million though, was very helpfull :)
incredibly helpful, the visual and conversation elements were much appreciated. as opposed to some computer-head drone, you were as charming as the geico gecko to listen to!
Thanks let me ask you if by any chance do you know how i can protect a dmg file for that any windows or mac external or internal Hard Drive can not get? like not asking me for the password but to say error this can't be done. Because this friend gave me a expensive program and a windows friend want's it but he don't even have a mac so it's really suspicions and i don't wan't that program to be on any other computer because not to get my friend in trouble! if anything happens!! Help!! Any any One
Thank u soo much for the vid! there is but one comment i must make. Not being able to add or subtract files from the password protected folder defeated the purpose of even having it (in my case). so I did a little more searching and all u need to do is.. instead of going to File<New<Blank disc image, just click on the "New Image" icon and go through the same steps. then add the files and to ur password protected file and u will be able to READ AND WRITE.
honestly, your talking about your wall paper. do you have any consideration for other people's time?

...or just search .jpg or .wmv/.mp4 etc. and everythings still there lol Good tutorial but sempt pointless to me.

could someone just delete the dmg file?
condw93 4 months ago
@condw93 I was able to copy it and delete the copy without writing any passwords so... yeah.
Doesn't seem to be the best solution after all because it even looks more important thing as an disk image.
Chronon88 4 months ago
@condw93 not if you lock it

isn't there a way to JUST password protect a folder so I can add files to it without having to do all this disk utility crap?
linkfan22 1 year ago
@linkfan22 before you select the encryption, change the compressed option to read/write. Then you'd be able to add stuff in.
