you cant choose your weapon..your assigned a rifle for a certain type of weapon. but for some situations you take a M40A1 or a 50 cal..depending on the difficulty of the mission.because if your far enough away then you probably need a 50 cal. since a M40A1 can't reach everywhere..or it depends on what your target is but you never really know until your target is in your sights.

It's a muzzle brake. What it does is redirect gasses so the barrel doesn't jump from recoil. I guess it also affects recoil against the shoulder somewhat, but Marines shouldn't worry about that much. The guys that make it through sniper school are made out of rock anyways.

The rifle depicted is The Barrett M-82A1 SASR... and you are correct in that the muzzle brake redirects gases, but the genius of this particular rifle is that the barrel is spring loaded and retracts upon firing to eat further recoil... beyond that, there is minimal drop in pitch on the stock of the rifle, so all remaining recoil goes directly into the shoulder rather than at an angle...
