  • Happy Birthday, and God bless Les Paul! June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009

  • "Whats your name?" "Its on your guitar" *Gets mind fucked*

  • excellent doc. thanks for posting.

  • That commercial is awesome..."what´s your name? It´s in your guitar"...how many can say that?

  • just got a 1950s lespaul studio tribute in heritage cherry sunburst. limited run for 2010. 2 soapbar p 90s man it is sweeeet. i cherish that thing, without the les paul and with out les paul the music industry just wouldnt be the same

  • What did Epi Do nothing?

  • It's funny, but listening to all these old shows from the 50's I'm overwhelmed with this feeling that their music is the epitome of modernity. It's more modern than the music that's being made now.

  • thank you les paul thank you

  • 0:08. Learn how to pronounce words before you make a fool of yourself next time! "WAUKESHA!"

  • I went to see him play last august and i'm glad i did.R.I.P. Les.

  • Les Paul did not invent the electric guitar. He designed the second most popular mass produced solid-bodied electric guitar. The first and most popular solid-bodied electric guitars were designed by Leo Fender. However there were electric guitars being produced as early as the 30's, mostly

    Hawiian Lap-steels.

  • You've got it confused. Yes, he designed the second popular solid body electric guitar that was commercially available, but he had been shopping those designs to Gibson for ten years. They were disbelievers in the concept until the Fender came out and was successful, and only then were his designs bought, but he invented it independently and had been refining the concept for years.

  • You have got the word "invented" confused son. Even though Les' "Log predates the first commercially available fender broadcasters, that doesn't mean he invented the electric guitar. Rickenbacker put out the first commercially available, not retrofitted, electric guitars in 1931 when Les was 16 years old.

  • Thanks for remembering Mr Sunburst.

His exhibit at the RnR HoF was a favorite.

  • Dear Paul, the great band in heaven is now complete! Wish we could se and hear that jamsession!

  • rest in peace lester william polifus

  • A name that will live forever. A bigger influence on modern music than maybe anybody.

  • RIP

  • Rest In Peace Lester William Polifus...Vaya Con Dios...

  • les paul was the real deal praise God.

  • Les Paul godfather of Steve Miller R.I.P.

  • if lespaul hadn't invented the rerecording technique and multitracks recording systems we have probably never listen to the gem from Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly who used the lespaul technic. Rest in peace

  • Hope You're Jammin' with David Carradine right now! Your amazing guitars changed my musical life!!! Peace, Love & Blessings to You...

  • Thanks, Les, for your contributions to music and recording.

  • RIP, music will never be the same

  • Musicians and music lovers alike thank Les for his creative energies. Without his vision, the musical landscape would be very, very different. Again, thank you Les. The world of music will always hold you dear to our hearts. Rest in Peace.......

  • RIP the world will be a quieter place without you

  • RIP Les Paul... thanks for Rock n Roll!!

  • rest in peace

  • He's alive and kickin...plays every week still!

  • God I love this man!!!

    Les Paul is the man!

  • ahha ace is so fucked up

  • is he still alive

  • he is

  • The best of the best LES PAUL!!!

  • amazing! its weird seeing a guitar thats a normal standard way back then being played in a 1950s show... It looks strange even though its the reverse around and its the guitar now thats vintage and was big back then...

  • How can you thank somebody for something as monumental as the electric guitar. It's like thanking Edison for the light bulb; we take it all for granted and can't imagine a lifestyle without these things.

  • Simply a living legend!

  • My hero at 2:45!

  • real legend

  • he taught steve miller playing guitar. stve miller wrote THE JOKER

  • Sittin' in with Les tonight at the Iridium

    Steve Adelson

  • Just a couple days ago I interviewed him for a project, he is a really funny guy. he is incredibly nice!

  • you interviewed him for a project?

  • last year I met him in NYC. He is a funny guy .....Les Paul...thanks.....

  • Wow he's amazing.

  • A TRUE Genius who was years ahead of his time....he has paved the road for EVERYBODY since.........i simply bow in front of GREATNESS........Much love and respect for the grand old man of the guitar........ Les if you read this.....

    Xavier

  • Keep your pants on dude.

  • i have not all understand but with wikipédia complement i find this video very interessent this men is a monunument

    sorry for my english

  • Also, I read somewhere, a jazz guy made an electric guitar in the early 20's with telephone parts!!

  • AS much as I respect the miestro. He did not invent multitrack recording, overdubbing or reverb! Even before tape, they were over dubbing with disks, in the late 20's. Also, they had 2 (stereo is multti track), 3 and 4 track machines around and he just asked Ampex to make him an 8 track, it took a while and money but ampex made it not Les. And reverb chambers were around for ages, just a big echoey room with a speaker and a mike.

  • A true guitar legend!!

    Lester William Paul

  • Just to clarify. LP's hometown is pronounced WALK-A-SHA. I grew up there also, so I had to throw in my 2 cents.

  • I'm a fan, since the fifties, when his first record (how high the moon) came to France...This guy is a giant, he is at the end of something, and at the beguining of something else...the way he plays guitar is very influenced by Django Reinhardt, don't forget it...

  • les paul is awsome!!

  • Excellent love it !!!

  • The funny thing is Les Paul is STILL BETTER than all of the so called guitarists shown in this video.

  • Les played a concert in Milwaukee in June. He opened an exhibit on his life, times and historic achievements. What an awesome individual!

  • He is not only alive, but at 93, he plays every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club in NYC.

  • ya but this was made in 2005....

  • he still does it i saw him last week!

  • is he still alive?

  • yup i think he is 91

  • he is 93

  • Say the name of the city right you bitch. Its waukesha

  • nice !!

  • Excellent love it !!!

  • JVC funny commercial:

JVC - you're not the thinnest around any more

    (copy to youtube search field)

  • It's funny seeing Zakk Wylde in this vid!!!^_^

  • G'DAMN! Ace is looking rough! I know he's old, but g'DAMN!

  • Les Paul is a great guitar player and inventor, but he DID NOT invent the electric guitar

  • A wonderful clever man - but no one person can truly be said to have invented the "electric " guitar. Mention has to be made of Leo Fender, Rickenbacker and several other pioneers

  • yes yes. He was one of the first to experiment with solid body electric guitars. First with microphones and later he invented the "log guitar". Les paul all the way. I have a cheap stratocaster copy at home, but what I really want is either the brian may "red special" or more probably the gibson les paul model :D

  • He didn't invent the electric guitar. He invented the "solid body" electric guitar as a way to get rid of the feedback that occurred with the electric arch-top guitars of the time.

    He also created multi-track recording.

  • who did ?

  • If its not at the store well then you just have to make one! Love it!

  • lol i loved the commercial

  • Too bad the narrator didn't ask someone how to pronounce "Waukesha".

  • i have a les paul 1957 for sale..in venezuela see my video..EDUARDOERD..

  • i have a les paul 1957 for sale..in venezuela see my video..EDUARDOERD..

  • The last line is kind of mean.

  • We Wouldn't have the great Ace Frehley without Les Paul!

  • you are cat poop!

  • you are cow poop!

  • you are rabbit poop

  • Go sit on a penny.

  • Great video, very clever man Les Paul.

  • is he alive??? someone knows???

  • hes alive. hes 92

  • Amazing. What would the world of music be like if it weren't for him? Wonder what would have become of Jimmy Page? It's possible that things could have just skipped by for who knows how long, without Les Paul.

  • Yes. The guy changed the world, didn't he.

  • its a great vid but its kind of quiet.

  • Great video - thanks for sharing it.

  • The narrator pronounces Waukesha wrong!

  • haha i thought i was the only one who noticed, i guess anyone who is not from wisconsin wouldnt know, they never seem to anyways xD

oh how i miss wisconsin so, that place is fuckin awesome!

  • I think the sound is unbeatable for jazz. As big an influence on music generally as the atom bomb was on world wars. And a great beer ad! They should run it again.

  • They should. Agreed!

  • i <3 LP

nyone know how much a cheap les paul costs?

  • gibson les paul standard is about 2200.

epiphone les paul standard is about 400.

  • 2200 for an LP stantard? my friend, you got gipped. BIG time.

  • cheap one costs about 1100

  • sry it has to be a epiphone Les Paul but gibson is a little better

  • actually, the epiphone elist guitars are better than most gibsons. the only difference is the cheaper epiphones are made in korea.

  • omg, you have the robot!!!!!!!

    it's so awesome self-tuning!

    lucky.

  • never saw that coors commercial before, its awsome!!!

  • my hero

  • i am the biggest les paul fenatic!!! i have 3 lp studios,1 supream 5 standards, 1 58 reissue, and i recently bought the all new robot les paul for $4500.00

  • how minted are you?

  • are the normal les pauls like $200,000!?

  • No, I think they're usually priced at 2000-3000$

  • It's actually pronounced wa-kesh-shaw.

  • that smile at 7:11 so awesome

  • the only problem with him is that he wouldnt let gibson put his name on the "sg" because he didnt like it and he said it wouldnt sell.

  • Hate to correct the voiceover, but it's pronounced WAU-KEE-SHAW.

  • gibson changed the design and called it the New Les Paul... but Les Paul asked them not to sell it. Gibson just changed the name to SG for Solid Guitar

  • Correct. Gibson needed a guitar to compete whth the fender stratocaster.

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhh LES PAUL¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ thanks for the gibson Les Paul¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • dolmakeyourselfclear im sorry but you are mistaken. les p[aul created the electric guitar the guitarsa before where just an acoustic with a pickup. but les masde the first ALL electric

  • you are a first class prick les paul is the best!!

  • i believe that he chose railroad track for his electric guitar

  • The price of a sunburst = The cost of wedding ceremonies with two hotties. :) LOL

  • whoa....the orange sunburst les paul guitar:$200,000!!

    holy crap

  • i never even knew! thanks !!

  • For a true grasp of what Les Paul did for music as we know it (specifically recording techniques) do a little research into the origins of multi-tracking. Even if he had never picked up a guitar, he would still be a legend. In fact, having his name on one of the best known guitars directs many people in perhaps the wrong direction when finding out about the man.

  • he didn't invent reverb or the electric guitar.

  • Um.. Adolph Rickenbacker invented the electric guitar in 1937. Les paul built the log in 1941. He wasn't the first.

  • les paul is amazing! i hope he lives another 90 years!

  • WOW!

This woman has the least enthusiastic voice ever!

  • How can you mention Les Paul and John Denver in the same breath!! Country boy John Denver was good, but he does not compare to the Legendary LES PAUL!!

  • that is great!!!! good job on the film!

  • omfg u are such a dumbass, you dont need to go on leno or letterman to be famouse, also he was even more famous than letterman and leno before they were born. he was one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived ur probably are not old enough to know or u are such a retard not to know or even read up on les paul.

  • dude you are fucking dumbass john denver is good but he nothing compared to les paul the invented the best guitar out retard

  • Les Paul have my deepest respect. He is a fantastic inventor and yes, the world would have been very different without him.

  • i drool over all the les paul i see...=P

  • multi track recording

    reverb

    and most important:

    THE LES PAUL!

GOD BLESS YOU, LESTER!! i'll give my life to shake his hand and say THANK YOU directly to him

  • They said Waukesha in a weird way. And I live right by Waukesha. In Wauwatosa to be exact.

  • Great Job!!

  • YEA LES PAULS!!!!!

  • Poor Fender!

  • i own several models of guitars.. Les Paul gibson is the BEST.. SERIOUSLY BETTER THAN THE FENDER OR THE IBANEZ

    SERIOUSLY

  • Beautiful...Go Les Go !!

  • Leo Fender is better

  • Except for the fact that he couldn't play the guitar.

  • leo fender didnt even know how to play the guitar

  • THE INVENTOR OF "SOUND ON SOUND" AND "MULTITRACK" RECORDING!!

    Yes Man.

  • Les Paul is living legend!!

  • While I realize that Les Paul didn't actually design the Gibson Les Paul (I think he preferred a flat-top electric with low-impedence pickups), I have stand in awe at all the wonderful inventions he made. Recording and playing would never be as varied and wonderful as they are now without his great contributions. Bravo! Thank you

Mr. polfus, without you I'd probably not enjoy playing the way I do.

  • Folks, just think most of the greatest rock heroes were not only great musicians they were sound alchemists.. Hendrix, Van Halen etc.. they were musical inventors in there own way.. much in vein with Les. Check out in detail les's playing he is WAY up there folks. A true American Genius. If you ever went to one of his shows you can go over and talk to Les no problem too!

  • I remember that Coors ad... I loved it!!!!!!

  • the guitars kick ass! cause they are the best

  • Thank you Les Paul for inventing the greatest instrument Of all time

  • DAMN RIGHT! I was born in Madison, and now live in Mt. Horeb. I'm glad that such a famous guy is from Wisconsin.

  • "happy birthday les paul... the world would be alot quieter place without you"... even though i know this means that the world will loose some music without les paul, somehow, that didnt sound right.....

  • what's your name?

    -look at your guitar xD

  • les is a genius! he made the best rock n roll guitar ever. no guitar will ever come close to the gibson les paul!

  • Les you are the living proof that we should all think out of the box no matter whom might say;

    "you can't do it." Thanks

  • The man is phenomenal. Saw him when he was much younger, like 80. Wonderful.

  • I am not a big G and R fan but slash freeking rocks!!!!
