  • Hooray for serious injuries!!

  • A few years later, the Giants knocked Joe Montana out of the NFC title game... and he was never the same again.

  • @StukInBuf Most people seem to remember the Leonard Marshall hit from the 90 game but I remember this one more. What a blowout this game was 49-3 I believe it was. And Montana was out from that Burt hit.

  • remember the raider, patriot playoff game ? was that fixed ????

  • NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS, BABY. READY 9'ers???

  • @CrazzzzzzzzyLarry Can't wait.

  • Even today that would be a legal hit. He got there as the ball was released and he did not hit him in the knees or the helmet. Had James Harrison been in that game. The dumbass would have launched himself (helmet first) into Joe's face mask.

But, back in those days an offensive lineman would have made sure that Harrison would be carted off before the game ended though. Not standing around looking scared like the Cleveland Browns do.

  • With the Pat Summerall voice " NO FLAGS.. TOUCHDOWN..."

  • LT was right they kicked there ass that day! The greatest linebacker in history! !!!!!

  • Giants Niners... See you next week!

  • Montana aka greatest of all time.

  • @MrRobdini i agree and an all star human being to boot

  • When the 49ers signed burt, some reporters were interviewing him and Boom !Joe Montana runs into him. All the reporters and me were lauging our asses off i wish someone would post it.

  • POW! right in the kisser.

  • I have this game on video VHS and I throw it on once in a while to get a good laugh.

  • Must have been the worst loss for the Niners with Montana as a starter. Beating the Walsh era Niners by 46 points anywhere is quite an accomplishment.

  • Epic hit by one of the biggest beasts to ever play defensive line. He hurried up Montana, caused a pick 6 and knocked him out of the game. Now Suh could learn from this guy.

As John Madden would say, "Now that's football!"

A then ringless 2nd year Jerry Rice trailing Taylor after the INT. He must have been the intended target of Montana's pass. The Niners were no whiners, and they only got better after '86 winning two more Super Bowls with Montana as their starter.

  • best play in NY Giants history.

  • Awesome.

  • Who cares about an athletes personal life some if you sound kinda gay and should be watching days of our lives, I'm a skins fan but l.t. Was the shit. End of story

  • @brklynsown well I always thought Pat Fisher was the cat's ass and I'm a Giants fan

  • Was this in the playoffs????

  • @DallasCowboyFan95 yes, it wad the playoffs. it was the same season montana came back from his back surgery so everybody was freaked out that it was his back that got reinjured. He started and ended the season the same way....painfully

  • Does anybody remember how long he was lights out? Just briefly, or for a few minutes

  • might be one of the best hits on a qb.

  • they should have buried Montana next to Hoffa...

  • @tallbuildings

    Too Funny!

  • Yeah well we paid them back with a 44-10 drubbing thanks to Rickey Watters.

  • @benji2261 you gave my giants too much credit...it was 44-3 LOL

  • @benji2261 Who cares? Simms and LT were playing their final game and Marshall (the guy who killed Montana the final time) was already gone, so was Bavaro, Banks, and most of the guys on offense.

If it helps you sleep better at night, go right ahead.

  • What a faker cry baby, walk it off you little girl.

  • The biggest play of this game may have been when Jerry Rice caught a bomb from Montana and was running into the end zone untouched when he inexplicably fumbled and the Giants got the ball for a touchback. Maybe it would not have mattered at all but it sure was an ominous sign for the 9ers that day.

  • GOT DAMN... looks like Montana died out there

  • Montana is the greatest quarterback that ever lived period

  • LT was a great football player who was not mentally or emotionally able to function in society. Everyone seems to have overlooked these things all of his life, because of his football ability. Now that he is no longer any use to the NCAA or NFL, he's on his own; with predictable results.

  • @jln55

I think in the grand scheme of things, L.T. still wins over you.

  • Wow i wonder why brady manning are not getting those hits..... joe might won a couple of extra rings

  • Hits like this is unfortunately why you have rules today such as "late hit" and "roughing the passer".

  • @LivingWorstNightmare

    exactly!

  • Carl Banks said that they (the NY Giants) had an unwritten and/or unspoken rule that if someone took out one of their players with a cheap shot they were to return the favor and who better to take out than the opposing (and offending) team's star quarterback?

So, even IF (and that is a big "IF") Marshall's hit on Montana was cheap and/or illegal, the 49ers brought this on themselves for intentionally trying to injure Giants QB Jeff Hoffstetler's knee earlier in the game. Justice was served!

  • Ying and yang. Now the law is giving LT an ass whipping.

  • Montana got revenge against the Giants the next year in Giants Stadium when he threw the winning 78 yard TD to Jerry Rice. The crowd was going crazy right before Joe released the ball and when it landed in Rice's hands and he cruised into the end zone, you could hear a pin drop

  • My brother was lucky enough to be at this game. He said that the overhead PA paged a Dr. SoandSo to the 49er locker room a short while after Montana was assisted back there and everybody in the stands were worried there was some serious damage to him. He left by ambulance shortly after the half only got people more convinced he was seriously F'd up.

  • The Only Mistake Jerry Rice made of his career, the fumble running into the endzone OPENED the flood gates. He scores, this game is A LOT DIFFERENT!

  • Lawrence Taylor = child molester

  • @jordan23tonysoprano

a 16 yr old prostitute is hardly a 'child'. I'm sure no virtue was lost in her encounter with LT.

  • That hit almost put montana in to retirement, The 49ers are my team and I never really minded the Giants but when the 9ers played them I hated them. They were tough well coached and always prepared. And they always seemed to land the bigest shots on Montana, Don't forget about the Marshall shot in the 90's play offs.

  • Easily the hardest hit an interior d-lineman has EVER put on a qb

  • The Niners got off to a quick start in that game too. On one of the 1st plays of the game, Rice caught a pass and looked like it was going to be a 49er td. Just before getting to the endzone, Rice lost control of the ball and squirted loose. Giants recovered it in the endzone and the Niners came unglued after that.

  • oh my bad, sorry qukariz, please forgive me sometimes I'm slow.

  • 49ers beat the Giants in '81, and '84 in the playoffs...the Giants beat the 49ers 3 times in the postseason--'85, '86, and '90, twice when San Fran was the defending champs. It was a great rivalry back then. Joe admitted those games against the Giants were the hardest he's ever been hit

  • Never the same? Are you kidding ME?!?! They won the super bowl in '89 on a last minute drive and absolutely DESTROYED everybody on their way to the super bowl in 1990. Montana played his best football ever that season. Ironically, it was a big hit by the Giant's Leonard Marshall that knocked Montana out and ended that run 1991.

  • Montana was never the same after this.

  • look at lt burnin jerry rice priceless

  • hey look i swear i saw a bag of crack fall out of lt pants! fuckin cokehead!

  • Hahahaha, 49-3. That's just sad.

  • @Jikk Hahahaha 44-3 in 93. That's just sad.

  • The Giants and 49ers played in some classic games back then.

The Giants are one the best teams in the NFL today and the 9ers are looking good.

It would be nice if both teams could make the kind of memories again like they did in the 1980's.

    Go Giants!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • The Giants & 49ers had a great Inter Conference Rivalry in the 1980's & early 1990's. Be nice if they could bring that back.

  • I thought he was dead and Jim Burt would have gone to jail LOL!!!!!!

  • This one makes me smile every time I see it. :)

  • Remember kids, in football it's considered "part of the game" to maim you opponent's best player with a blow to the head.

  • grow some balls.

  • Maximont- Go fuck yourself.

  • which hit is harder marshall or burt

  • I'd say Marshall. He almost killed him.

  • actually the niners beat the Giants twice in the playoffs (1981, 1984) and Montana's record against them all time, including the playoffs was 7-4. But the hit by Burt on Montana in '86 was the most savage that I've ever seen. And then later Burt joined Montana and the Niners and picked up a ring with them in 1989

  • cocaine is a hell of a drug!!!

  • So stupid, you guys don't even know how many times the 49ers and Giants played in the 80's post seasons. Don't forget 81 when the Giants got pounded. Giants didn't end Joe's career. He missed two seasons because his throwing tendon detached in 91 pre-season game in Germany knuckle heads. Remember the 78 yarder in '88 to win on the bomb in NY? Montana and Rice owned the Giants. Marshall was a fat cheap shot artist.

  • Denile ain't a river in Egypt.

I remember the Giants giving the team of the 80's all they could handle. The Giants beat the niners in the playoffs 3 times. Not to mention the MNF game when Ronnie Lott and 5 others were dragged by Bavaro for 30 yards. Two great teams. Don't ruin it by crying about imaginary cheap shots. You can cheer for the niners, just ...uh...don't act so.....San Franciscan :)

  • 3 out of 4 games in the POST SEASON....case dismissed!!!

  • The only way to beat the Montana led 49ers was to take out Montana....no other way to beat the 49ers but injure him, the Giants did just that and the Giants owned the 49ers in the post season during the 1980s....Under Parcells, the Giants won 3 out of 4 games vs the 49ers....The Giants had the recipe to stop the West Coast way before anyone did, destroy the QB and have good LBs....that is what the Giants had!

  • Nowadays, that hit is roughing the passer. I guess the NFL didn't like the way the Giants beat-up on poster boy Joe Montana.

  • omg yea, leonard marshall with that hit on montana in the 90 nfc championship.

  • fuckin giants wrecked montana's 49er career

  • how can you say the giants wrecked montanas career...montana won 4 sb titles...he returned after the injuries he sustained and made the chiefs valuable contenters...thats like me saying the niners wrecked lawrence taylors career when we kicked their asses 44-3 ,during his final game.he cried on the sidelines while ricky watters danced all over them for 5 td scores...1993 was the year,do your homework on it...lmao

  • i was referring to the 1990 leonard marshall hit. that cost him the 1991 and 1992 season when steve young took over, then montana had to go to the schottenheimer chiefs where he was doomed to always lose in the playoffs. so, the giants took away 4 seasons of opportunities to win 4 or even six superbowls with the 49ers and play his entire career in san fran. dumbass

  • That hit did break his hand, ribs, seperated his shoulder but that wasn't the cause for him missing almost 2 seasons. It was the elbow injury in the off season that made him miss those two seasons. Still, that hit did have an affect on everyone the 49ers, Montana, and Young.

  • Anybody remember when Kevin Nealon played Brent Musberger on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE 3 weeks later after this game? Walter Payton and Joe Montana were hosting (pretty funny show) and the parody was Brent Musberger kept on saying YOU'RE LOOKING LIVE. ON SEEBEEESS of JIM BURT TACKLING JOE MONTANA over and over , and Joe Montana was pretending to be pissed.

  • Check out an interview with New York Giants football icon Leonard Marshall live Saturday January 17th,2009 10:30amEST on The Mass Appeal sports talk radio show on WBTR..Google 'Jay reelz' for all archived shows..More guests every week..Call-in number is 718-664-9020..Live from N.Y.C

  • nobody knocked Montana around like the Giants did...G-Men took him out of the playoffs a couple of times

  • When I see Taylor making that comment at the end of that game, all I can think about is that guy was so full of coke at that time. I am really really happy he got his life turned around, saved his own life.

  • @twhessler1 Bro, look at the situation LT is currently in, and look at Montana. Both known as the greatest at their positions, yet one guy is looked upon with disgust, contempt, and pity. The truth always comes out with pro athletes when they leave the game, then they have to live their lives in the real world, and the true colors of a savage like LT comes out

  • @rbm90

You are right. Now if only someone could take out Big Ben's knees, we can catch him in the act of his NEXT (3rd) rape after he retires. Oh but it's Big Ben, so, he must be innocent. You are so transparent your first name should is probably Saran.

  • @twhessler1 L.T. turned his life around so well that he is now awaiting trial for raping an underrage girl.

yeah, I bet you're real happy.

  • @rayjr62

But what you will see by the time this season's Superbowl is played, is the power of winning 2 Superbowls. It got Big Ben off, and it will get L.T. off too. Like it or not. She will be payed off faster than you can say "I play for Dan Rooney".

  • @drbayoms You're probably right about this, but I'd like to see the court system make an example of L.T..

  • @twhessler1

Saved his own life? He just raped a little girl and has had many relapses and may be going to jail for a long time. What the hell are you talking about?

  • @bnegs521 -He didn't Rape a girl , if she was 6 months older it would be a 300$ fine Max , I worked the Door at lots of Clubs, the Difference between 16.1/2 and 21 is Sometimes VERY Hard to See.

  • @bnegs521 shut your mouth right now you ignorant bastard. he did not rape a little girl, he had sex with a 16 year old prostitue who told him that she was 19. He will be getting no prison time and he ended up only being brought up on two misdemeanors, one for patronizing a prostitute,

  • @gridironmaster27

Why don't you make me shut my mouth you sorry piece of crap. He ended up with no time because he is a celebrity of sorts. He had sex with a little 16 year old girl and only a piece of crap like you would defend that. How many times has LT been in trouble with the law? Huh? Too many to count. He will never get a job again because he is a criminal. Nobody would ever even touch him again. He is a loser and so are YOU.

  • @bnegs521

You are probably thinking "damn I had my eye on that 16 year old down the street, but I am not a 2x SuperBowl Champion, HOFamer and Greatest Linebacker of all time who has 2 very powerful and influential New York families to help me out" (the Mara's and Tisch's). What's sick (about you), is that I am not sure if you envy his inappropriate behavior with the girl or his career. Know what I think? I think (secretly), you envy both.

  • @drbayoms Nope I ain't down wqith sixteen year old girls like you buddy. When he was on the field he redefined the position but so what he is a piece of poop. And I would never envy a piece of living breathing poop like him or yourself.

  • You're crazy to say Montana is a prick, stupid. The guy's a warrior and a gamer. Burt's hit was straight up; Marshall's hit was a cheap shot, legal or not. 1st thing Burt did was go to the hospital and visit Montana after the game. Pure class. What was cheap about Marshall's hit was he INTENTIONALLY BROKE Montana's throwing hand while on the ground. He bent it backward and wouldn't let go. Only time at a football game I thought the crowd would be justified to storm field and go midevil.

  • @twhessler1

You sound like a bitter little bitch. Both hits were clean. Marshall did not bend his hand back. So Burt's hit was good and Marshall's hit was cheap, huh? You sound a little suspect. Gee I wonder what you REALLY mean, but are too scared to say.

  • @twhessler1 how did he intentionally do it? you're a dumbass watch the tape.

  • @twhessler1 I just watched that Marshall hit, and you couldn't be more full of shit.

  • @twhessler1 What ever, Giants won that game fair and square. The 49ers were yelling three-peat the whole game... till Joe got knocked out!!!

  • @ironwork92000

Yep, and knocking Joe out was the best chance the Giants had to win, because had he stayed in the Giants were going home empty-handed.

  • @AllPro777 Crybabies. Got DAMN you 49ers fans all sing the same tired song. Even Bill Walsh admitted that the Giants were the 49ers only peer in the mid-late 80s.

  • @TheEsquire212

I'm not a 49er fan. I just speak the reality. That's the NFL's greatest QB, and arguably the most clutch playoff QB of all time. What reason do I have NOT to think the 49ers would've won if Montana stayed in?

  • @AllPro777 Because the score was 28-3 at that point IIRC. The Giants were already rolling that day. Rice fumbled with NO ONE NEAR HIM early on that could have been a TD and the Niners never got on track.

  • @BigKahuna13

Yeah, but Montana had brought his team back from big deficits like that before. Montana's whole legacy was built on comebacks.

  • @AllPro777 Totally understand but I was there at that game. It was the Giants day already, they were unstoppable that year and they were crushing the 49ers in that game. When Rice just let the ball slip out of his hands with no one near him while running for a touchdown it was one of the most bizarre plays I'd ever seen. If it wasn't Jerry Rice I'd swear the game was fixed. Montana was great, one of my favorites but that game was over after that play regardless if Joe Cool stayed in.

  • @BigKahuna13

"If it wasn't Jerry Rice I'd swear the game was fixed"

If there are people out there with the power to "fix" games (and you and I both know there are). Why would you place Jerry Rice above being part of something like that? He is just a man. A man who played for Eddie Debartolo

  • @AllPro777 Montana could never beat the Giants in the playoffs. After the first two times, they owned him. Re: 85, this game, and 90.

  • @fatmanfiftythousand

He only lost the '90 game because he got knocked out, and even after that the 49ers would've won had Roger Craig not fumbled. That said, it doesn't matter because Montana still got his rings.

  • @AllPro777 The Parcells Giants had their number.

  • @AllPro777 It wasn't gonna happen that game.

  • @AllPro777 At least Montana took that beating like a man. You'd be wise to learn from him. Shut up and quit your whining. Not once did Joe complain. You shouldn't either. That's why many, many people (foes and friends alike) respects the shit out of him, and defends him as the best QB ever. This is coming from a Giants fan.

  • @optimus2g

Smh. Shut up, you sorry little bitch.

  • @AllPro777 lol. Joe certainly did.

  • Nature 2-0 in Super Bowls

Nuture boys 4-0 in Super Bowls in the 80's

I want to be a nuture boy.

  • And then Burt joined the 49ers and slammed the Giants left, right and center.

He got paid back in 1990.

  • That was the worst hit I've EVER seen on a QB. But Montana, as always, got even the following year at the Meadowlands with that dramatic 78 yarder for the winner to Rice in front of the cheering 49er sideline. And then Burt became a 49er

  • yeah lawrence taylor the best linebacker of all time

  • I don't think he's the best all time he's the best pass rushing linebacker of all time but what about Jack Ham, or Lambert, Dick Butkis.

  • mmm all linbackers are best: jack ham #59 jack lambert #58 mike singletarry #50 dick butkis #51 dereck thomas #58... but lawrence taylor is the king of the linebackers

  • Burt hit him in the throwing arm.

  • Marshall went for his back and then his arm,he aimed for his back.I know its a legal play,I'm not saying that its not,all I'm saying is that it was a cheap shot.

  • LT must have taken steroids that day. They should have tested the whole fuckin giants' team for steriods.

  • The 49ers were stunned after Joe went to sleep. I don't know if anyone remembers the pre-game show, but Brent and Jimmy "the Greek" were discussing how if you give Bill Walsh two weeks to prepare, the 49ers win. There was a graphic listing the perfect record with the two SB wins and the 1981, 1983 and 1984 divisional round wins. Even Jimmy "the Greeks" prediction was simply "Wershing" and a San Francisco 27 NY Giants 24 final score prediction.

Andy Rooney predicted a Giants blowout.

  • he hit him under the chin, that was a cheap shot, good thing the league cracked down on stuff like that, you can knock the shit out of soembody without trying to hurt him,and you can tell that they were trying to hurt him,and that's coming from a Giants fan

  • Are you out your mind, that was a legal hit and I'm not a Giants fan. Even if he did hit him in the head they would called a penalty back then. What's next you going to say the Leonard Marshall hit was dirty too.

  • Did you see his helmet knock his chin? I saw the crystal clear. Looked like it hurt like hell to me.

  • under the chin is a legal hit,are you serious,if thats the case then hitting someone in the throat is fair game. The Leonard Marshall hit was legal but it was a cheap shot,he was trying to injure Montana, you can tackle someone FROM BEHIND without aiming your helmet for their shoulder, thats dirty

  • He put his helmet right between his shoulder blade,he knew what he was doing.Even Madden said"we knew about Montana's back"The Giants knew about his back too,he was trying to injure Montana,it was a legal hit.Look how big Marshall was,he could've just jumped on Montana's back and easily take him to the ground, but no, he decided to place his helmet directly in his back and injure him.

  • I'm a Giants fan and I'm saying that hit was dirty,I'm glad we won the game but that was still a dirty play,it was legal, but still dirty or slick

  • There's no rule with using your helmet and hands to hit a player unless you go head first which is illegally. Second, you had Jerry Markbreit who did these two games as referee. This guy is one of the most famous and well-known NFL referees in history and also did a lot of Super Bowls and NFC championship games. He knows what he's doing and second with Marshall's hit he also went for his arm which was a caused fumble. Marshall did go for the hit and fumble which is a legal play.

  • Dont mention a referee because they all suck and they all make bad calls.I'm not blaiming the ref,I'm not saying he should've thrown his flag,I'm saying it was a legal hit,but a cheap shot,he placed his helmet in Montana's back,he placed it directly between his shoulder blades,it was a legal play but it was a cheap shot,he was trying to hurt Montana, you can go for the fumble by grabbing him from behind without putting your helmet in his back

  • A guy like Jerry Markbreit who did refed 4 Super Bowls and the Giants first one that year and doing numerous playoffs doesn't suck. Its not a cheap shot if you do it legally. Hell, with Marshall's hit, Montana was like a golf ball on a tee. He was just screaming to get hit from behind. Also with Montana he got injured so much during his career, you might as well touch him and he could get injured.

  • Montana had a bad back you genius, that's why he got injured.Guys were trying to hurt him, they always tried to knock the shit out of Montana,he took the worst pounding of any quarterback in the 80's.

  • It was still a cheap shot,he placed his helmet between his shoulder blades,if a guy has a bad back and you aim for his back, that is a cheap shot even though its a legal hit.

  • He did go head first,he placed his helmet into his back.

  • Yeah and he used his arm to cause the Montana fumble which is legal. That was just a great play by Marshall beating two blocks and running from the other side of the field to get him. Should he have been fined, No, should there be a penalty, no. He did his job at the expense of Montana getting hurt. Well about Jim Burt, don't you think that was a cheap shot when he went for Hostletler's legs? Yes and no but Hostelter didn't suffer the type of injuries that Montana did.

  • Yeah but Hostetler never took the kind of shots that Montana took or the amount of shots that Montana took.He shouldn't have been fined and it wasnt a penalty,I'm just saying he was trying to hurt Joe and he did

  • That's just part of football and if you can't take those hits then don't play QB.

  • always nice to see the 9ers get theirs, lol!!! replay baby, replay!!!

  • i met this guy burt i take football and baseball leasons from his son

  • the hit could of killed montana!!!

  • so it was a legal hit.

  • Now THAT'S how you treat the other team's quarterback!

  • yeah, but the Niners still have 5 rings.

  • Technically the Giants have 7 dating back to pre-super bowl era.

  • yeah the packers have many titles also but those don't count.1. 49ers 2.cowboys 3.steelers.

  • Those titles count. They are NFL championships....They should count. Packers have 12. Bears have 10. Giants have 7. Cowboys 9ers, and Steelers all have 5....Including super bowls and NFL championships.

The Vikings have 1 NFL championship too but that is after the merger so that doesn'

count because it was AFL vs NFL for the World Championship

  • Yeah but the Giants ruined their chance of a 3peat,do you remember that day?

  • yeah but the niners still have 5 rings.

  • Yeah but they are horrible today.

  • yeah but they still have 5 rings

  • Yeah that's true and even though I'm a giants fan I hope the 49ers can become a powerhouse once again cause I miss those Giants/49ers battles.

  • That's the beauty of winning championships because no matter what anyone says no one can take those away from you.

  • You'd be fined and penalized for that hit today. LOLZ!

  • ny giants dirty

     motherfuckers!!!

  • How is a hit in the chest dirty?

  • They need to show the part where they go to the sideline reporter who reports that the SF trainers asked Joe "where does it hurt" and Joe replied "everywhere."

  • Yakuza, that was from the 1990 NFC championship, when the sideline reported to Pat Summerall that "everything hurts"

But Burt's hit was just as bad (ironically, Burt was on the 49ers in 1990)

  • great day. So glad the arrogant prick montana got his. What a game that was, we(the giants crowd) were louder then ever that day and our boys were our to put the niners in the hospital. GIANTS!!!
