  • Awesome!

  • dutch television

  • I love your version......

  • I've been a fan of Tony joe after seeing him on TV with Kenny Rogers and the First Edition , when i was 14. This has always been one of my favorite songs, and Tony Joe's version has always been my favorite of 'em all.. He knocks it out the park!

  • Good stuff TJW!

  • this "version" captures a completely wonderful beauty possible within the song

  • Fantastic depth and quality. Wonderful voice and guitar. Took too long to hear the original version!

  • he JUST iZ! THE ROCK OF THE BLOCK!

  • I had a chance to see TJW a few months ago in Australia and didn't make it ... I'm probably not going to forgive myself for the oversight , what a talent.

  • Brilliant Again.

  • I JUST SHIT IN MY PANTS

  • The original man never gets the credit due. This is a great song have loved it all my life.

  • He does do an interesting take on the song. I could never do that well. Thank you so much for sharing this Al, "Rainy Night In Georgia" is a great tune. Thank you. Sincerely - Gayle

  • Great song love it :))

  • midnight stuff...

  • great, we love this song...

    Max & Lenny

  • I'm sure Brooke gave him a big hug for this one... really touches me.

  • First heard this on WLS /AM, via 'skip,' but then I'm probably showing my age! Great to hear how our friend has matured and endured..

  • goose bumps..... lovin' it!!!

  • 14 morons, hate to be so negative but...14 huge morons

  • Simple raw soul. I see there are 14 people who have NO soul.

  • WOW

  • Hey Tony, if you're watching, Thanks!!

The silent majority know that this is real music.

BTW, love the harp subing for the original bridge :)

  • artists like this are disappearing quickly one of the greats.

  • As you say it's your opinion but for me he does the most soulful version.Try the Sam Moore/Conway Twitty version. That's also really good.

  • @xwtfdji 5* the best....agree

  • As you say it's your opinion but for me he does the most soulful version.Try the Sam Moore/Conway Twitty version. That's also really good.

  • I love this version. Although TJW wrote and recorded it, I don't think he had the chops to make it as expressive as Brook Benton or David Ruffin.

    Just my opinion.

  • I saw him live opening Waylon Jeniings In at EKU in Richmond KY back In the 80's. The acoustics suck in that building for concerts but this was a great experience just getting to see two of my favorite artist on one ticket! It was awesome!

  • The best rendition of "rainy night in Georgia"

I have heard, most no not have the deep

vocal as this singer does, which makes the song.

  • @fourtrains The original version.... :)

  • I lovew thiws version of the song. It takes me back to a time when times were hard but life was good. I love the was he gently carresses this song. I'll be playing this to death!

  • Well he could have lead a band called "TJ's Swamp Devils" but he went it alone,or maybe have wore sequined suits in pastel colours with high collars but he had his reasons.

  • Outstanding TJW.

  • Veeery nice Tony Joe!

  • What can I say? I feel good hearing this, He made the World!

  • he stones me

  • T J Rules

  • Man, does it get any better than that?

  • real music from a real musician....i seen him couple times here in australia...one of the best live acts ive seen...hope i get to see his show again..

  • Mmmmmm!xxx

  • TJW is a true blue blues artist! Fair Dinkum! Cheers Cheryl, South Australia! Spread the Word Folks!x

  • A conversation between the man, his old Strat, and his harmonica.

    Simply wonderful. And wonderfully simple.

  • Excellent !

    French Fan !

  • Been listening to this guy on maximum rotate since the early 1970s - his music keeps doing it. Live, he's awesome. When he gets into a full groove - just him and a drummer sitting behind him - Tony Joe fills the room. I don't know how he does it: with one guitar he's lead, rhythm and bass all at one. Brilliant guy.

  • This man is amazing...he is off key some but the song is so good it doesn't matter

  • Wow!!! Blows me up!!!!!!!!!

  • This is such a haunting performance. This is the guy who made Poke Salad Annie so famous - of course when he was much younger...Tony Joe White. This is from Dutch television and it's just so wonderfully melancholy - especially shot in daylight, with commuter trains running behind him. One of my all time favorite performances.

  • 8.54 In Holland. Great song to start the day with.

  • sure wish i could find the original recording of this song-i think it was on the flipside of the polk salad 45

  • goshdamn. this one video just about justifies the existence of the internet.

  • @originaltbyrd Dem's pretty strong words dere, otb ??

  • Is there a dvd of this television broadcast?

I've seen just one time on satellite...

  • Did not know he wrote this- - a great tune, I humbly cover it myself

  • @NLisi55 Ask Tina Turner who he's...

  • Bad ass Dude !

  • @13lael

    new TJW ALBUM 28/09

  • fantastique !!

  • That is when you had singers & songwriters what an era

  • Best Guitar Strap I have ever seen!!!

  • The most understated song writer of his generation.

Listen to Tina Turner, 'Silent Wings', another song he wrote.

  • The Father of Swamp Rock

  • ultraaaaa coooollllll.........aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh

  • Wow that was mesmerising

  • I fuckin love this song. Ray Charle's version of this is most amazing though I think.

  • Seriously people, Tony Joe White wrote the song. Go look up the info on the song, He is given the copy write for the lyrics along with the original music to go with the song, Brook Benton who signed to the Label that Tony Joe was on, asked for permission and was allowed to do his version of the song. And now you know.

  • @nox0underling Another interesting fact is Tony claimed Bobbie Gentry and her Ode to BillieJoe as an influence for him to write songs about his beloved South.

  • eric72265, you need to check your facts before you post, tjw did write this song and many many others, and if you don't like his music, then keep listing to what the critic's tell you to, but don't post till you have the fact's. just saw him in b'ham ala this guy has been around a coon's age, i hope he will be around another, and by the way brooke can't hold a candle to TONY JOE WHITE, don't like it, don't listen but don't criticize

  • @rmorris1001 - I just can't argue witha word you say.He is so underrated. His music is so different, really unique to him. He's got many true fans - you've only got to read some of the comments on YouTube - just a pity he isn't recognised more for his talent and originality.

  • I saw this broadcast. I was really impressed with this guy. Just that voice, a guitar and some harmonica. I only knew Polk Salad Annie and Gonna Look Good In Blues from him, I only knew Randy Crawford's Rainy Night In Georgia.

  • When he sings you can almost feel being in Georgia on a rainy night..... amazing. give me goosebumps.

  • this has to be the worst lyrics to such a great song. Brook Benton would be rolling over in his grave.; dude, please!

  • that's whtlife brings sometimes. You have to deal with it.

  • This is the original version and it was written by Tony Joe White.

  • @peppertree5706 Absolutely my friend!!! Jesus some people :P

  • I love this version of Rainy Night in Georgia could not get any better.

  • @SuperJudith1

This is the original version of the song.

    He also wrote it.

  • @peppertree5706 He did not wrute this song, Brooke Benton wrote it back in 1969

  • @eric72265 Tony Joe White wrote the song. you are only 180 degrees off.

  • the brother is half cherokee

  • I just heard this on radio and had to come look for it, now I'm one great songwriter richer.

  • I LOVE IT

  • After all, he DID write the song, of course it's great.

  • he's written so many fantastic, totally different, songs - pity is most people have never heard them - no room in this world for individuals with principles

  • wasnt aware he was such a great song writer

  • @xwtfdji

Fisrt heard him in 1975. Been a fan of his even since but I agree that he is not the legend he should be. Why is that? I have often wondered.

  • @Mrsaliyah2010

too independant.won't conform, won't even attempt to fit the mould.stays true to what he feels is right.can you imagine a politician doing that?what a better place the world would be.

  • Really?...didnt know that.Thanks

  • Without a doubt ,one of life's most overlooked musical geniuses!

  • Yeah his rendition is the best.. Last comment sent in error.

  • Ray Charles: Georgia On My Mind

  • I am underwelmed by these comments (but not surprised.). This is legend original American swamp music.

But then again I think lederhosen are gay.

  • Hmmm i think TJW is on a completely different level, so much deeper, its his own song, no one does it better than the original artist!!

Plus he plays a strat and harmonica, thatsa deep combination lol

  • @allofmyllife - While that is usually true, I have to say Johnny Cash's remake of NIN - Hurt is much better than the original.

I LOVE this song. I also love the Boozou Bajou Remix (TJW has done at least one other song with them called Keep Going).

  • Another great version is Conway Twitty & Sam Moore.Well worth watching & viewing.

  • Nice song made memorable by Ray Charles.

  • tony joe white a true talent made a ton of money when brook benton recorded his song aside from polk salad annie he had some great album cuts in the mid seventies like lustful earl and the married woman ,and takin time to love which was one of the most country rock blue eyed soul songs you would ever hear anywhere..

  • just check out the man's albums.from 1969 till today.some amazing songs.try - "mother earth"/"closer to the truth"/"always the song"/"vegetarian shuffle"(so so funny & funky)

  • I agree.........what a great version of Rainy Night In Georgia

  • This man is a genius, a treasure........

  • Many years ago I had a version of this from a UK BBC 2 show called words and music - he came in and sung the song live as he did here. Talked about how he came to write the song and so on. Stunningly beautiful. Still.

  • Love it..;-)

  • it dosent get any better than that give's me chills beautiful song

  • Beautiful haunting tune thank you

  • A beautiful song...

  • awesome song!

and we do not have yellow trains in Atlanta, according to the info, this was shot at a Dutch tv station, although, Rainy Night (and days) in Georgia could have been our theme last week :(

  • When did he record this and is the original on an album I can get? lol from Hooksy in OZ.

  • Polk.....................................salad.

  • Tony joe is it

  • You might also like Ted Hawkins voice if you like Ton-Jo

  • Can't believe he wrote this great song! Randy Crawford and Eva Cassidy do beautiful versions of this song too, check them out, you won't be dissapointed!!

  • great version indeed but I Like Brook Bentons the best, this guy wrote a tremendous song. I sure this jam put his kids thru college

  • he was only a teenager when he wrote this song.

  • My #2 fave TJW,after what does it take

  • It appears this setting is along the R/R tracks in Atlanta.

  • not the downtown connector????

  • bless all troubadars and troubadors.

    in no particular order,

    Paul

  • beautiful and true

  • brilliant

  • Actually Tony Joe White wrote this in 1962. If you google the title the info comes right up. Glad to see a homeboy from Louisiana still hangin.

  • Is it an accident that he is "hovering" by his suitcase? Is the cat alive that wrote this song? TJW was a dumptruck driver for the state when he wrote this. Was he thinking about taking a sharp turn at 70 with a load maybe? I love the guy...used to listen to this song (brooks benton version) when I was a kid. Is the heavy part about it the above mentioned? Yeah, it's raining all over the world, but the strong keep going...broken hearts and all.

  • This is my brother........

  • i know it's weird, but i never really understood some people's attraction to the blues- till i heard this.

i think i get it now.

jesus. this guy kills. a true legend.

  • I know what you mean, the best.

  • Kan iemand mij helpen aan deze video beelden

  • I've had BB's version in my head for, what, 30 years? And favorited here for some time. Let me just say, never having heard this, I'm floored - wish it was longer.

  • You might want to listen to Brooke Benton singing it, too. Tony Joe wrote it and he performs it so differently from Benton, but both renditions are stupendous.

  • The song is in D harmonica is G

  • can anyone tell me what kind and or key of harmonica tony plays?

  • Great stuff, looks like a Blues Deville amp, and the tone is perfect for this song. GREAT post.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Much appreciated.

  • This guy is a real class act, one in a million. No BS, just a master songwriter/musician. Thanks for posting this, I sure enjoyed it.

  • @toterola451 im good friends with tony's son and grandson. his granson is my cousin, they live in north arkansas and upkeep tony joe's farm that joins them. good bunch of people.

  • Great writer, one of a kind voice. Thanks for this treasured memory.

  • Yes, very nice.....

    JohnJ

  • COOL !!

  • great song

  • What Amp does he use?

  • Probably Fender 57 Twin amp, 57 Deluxe, Blues Deluxe or Blues Deville

  • The guitar outro sounds kind of like the wings song "band on the run". The mama part.

  • there is great remix of this song by boozoo bajou,it's on the compilation juke joint 2

  • Don't matter anyway who did what and in what year. The fact is that this is the real deal and this is what the young folks should see and learn from.... Dank je Diederik voor het uploaden...

  • Yes Tony Joe White did record it in 1969 but Elvis was suppose to record it in 1977.

  • He really did write it for elvis in the January 1977 sessions in Nashville. You can look it up.

  • No he didnt.........he recorded it himself in 1969.....get your facts right matey

  • WoW, could this be any more comforting!!? sound of his harmonica touches my soul

  • Didn't know he wrote this-

Big props for the detailed lyrics-

Grew up on Brooks version -so thanks for posting!!

  • Bet you didn't know he wrote the song for Elvis to do in his January 1977 sessions but because Elvis canceled the session and by him dying he never got a chance to record it. Elvis would have killed it!!!

  • Hey Gang: Brook Benton had a million seller with this song in early 1970. Dunno if Presley was intended for this song, it's the first time I've ever heard of that.Presley did do "Polk Salad Annie" live and record "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" both written by Tony Joe. But I think it's a bit deciving to say it was written for Elvis in 1977. Perhaps you meant something else. :-) Dave

  • how could he have wrote it for elvis in 1977 when he recorded it himself in 1969????!!!!

  • simply amazing

  • Great song! covered by many artists...and still, no one does it better than the man who wrote it! Tony Joe rules!

  • heck can't the Fox grow a little older

  • Tony you still got it pal I'm so glad to see you . We miss you and L Looking forward to geting together again. love KennyG

  • I saw Tony Joe White in 1969 at the Texas International Pop Festival, Locally known as the Lewisville Pop Festival. Just like a good wine it gets better with age

  • Twins of Alabama. No one artist! Friends and fans of TJW.

  • Talk about the real deal..

  • I saw Tony two years ago at Blue Note in Ghent (Belgium). He's the best! Hope he'll be back soon over here.

  • you took my comment the wrong way,I am one of Tony Joe's biggest fans in fact I found his Austin city limits video on e-bay,and it plays constantly ,I just meant I want to see the expressions on his face and be as spunky as he was singing his swamp rap song I really do think he is wonderfuland I really do love this mans music, and think he is the best all around entertainer there is because he not only writes his music he plays the guitar and harmonica and sings..

  • Thanks for sharing that.

  • now this is soul( i was reading that somebody)

was saying he could not sing it well...

this is real soul, pain, hope, love and a new

future in the way he does it

  • Saw TJW in Donostia, Spain, at the Jazz Festival: was GREAT.
