As for speaking in public, he spoke and the riots in Birmingham ended. That was a decent outcome, a decent intervention. I personally think his words were worth their weight in gold. No politician could have had that impact.
Did he want to shut off the world and just curl up at home with his family and cry - I have little doubt he did. Did he force himself to confront the world and try to make a difference despite the hurt inside? One can only guess, but have an educated guess...
