Yeah - the first two open rings are the hardest. I had to do about a dozen attempts to get two on camera for this tutorial.
Keep trying! Once you get the chain started, it's much easier. And, as I noted in the vid, you can always make it longer than you need for your current project so you can detach the extra section and keep it for starting the weave again in the future.

Try using larger rings. If that doesn't work, try full persian to get a feel for this type of weave.
