And yes, I do give to the poor, I am against unjust wars, and I am against the death penalty. It is the teaching of the Catholic Church that in our modern time with maximum security prisons the death penalty is no longer necessary. But the death penalty is not an intrinsic evil like abortion is. That is the teaching of my Church and I agree with it.

That's your belief not mine. I have different beliefs than yours. I believe children should be nurtured so that they feel safe and are thereby able to realize God. If a woman is in a position that prevents her from being able to nurture her child she should abort before it reaches consciousness. Uncared for children suffer tremendously. Since this is basically a religious issue, it should not be legislated and every woman should have a right to choose.

Abortion is NOT a religious issue as you would like it to be, abortion is a civil rights issue. Science has proven that life starts at conception, it is a human being in the womb. Where are the rights of the unborn person? You don't know what the future of the unborn child would be, and it is very arrogant to think that the child would be better off dead. Do you believe that consciousness is what gives a person their human dignity and rights?

Abortion is a religious issue. What you believe about the soul may be different than what I believe. What does it mean to sanctify human life? Why do we protect each other by making laws against murder? I believe as a community we protect each other in these ways so that we can feel safe and realize our greatest potentials--and realize God. But an unconscious being has not yet hoped for a future, doesn't worry about it's safety. Civil rights don't begin at conception--yet.

Most mentally handicapped ARE conscious and, although, their consciousness may be limited in some respects, they do have their dreams and hopes and self-awareness. If they don't and are nothing more than a vegetable, then I say in that case it ought to be up to the family who may be attached to them and who has to care for them.

I really hope you answered that way just because you didn't want to admit the fault of your argument, and not because that is how you truly feel. This is the danger when we play God and try to decide who has the right to life and who does not.
