  • "A world that doesn't give a damn about us" well dogs are domesticated to have affections for humans. We also have families. But I get the core of what he's saying

  • hahahahaha this is great

  • videos cul

  • that was great.

  • wow, depressing...

  • There is no You. There is a body, and thoughts, and feelings; but there is no You. Never was, never will be. It's not a philosophy, it's absolute truth. Look and see.

How can life be given to you, when there was no one for whom to give the life?

You just are, look. There is no You.

  • @HylianSpirit ok, you just really really really scared me for a couple seconds there. I didnt exist. dude, wtf.

  • @ncripzx You exist, of course. Just not in the format you might've imagined.

Reality isn't You + Everything else. You were fundamentally woven in to the very fabric of reality, down to the most microcosmic instance. You can't be apart from reality.

There can't be a singular entity to say "I am This." while rejecting every single other thing as "Not me."

You aren't sitting back watching this movie. You're IN the movie. The movie is in the movie. There can't be an audience.

  • @HylianSpirit wow, dude this is hitting me HARD. All these years of suffering for me... and I simply exist AS the senses!... I've always seen myself as this thing between my ears who is separate from the body. Appreciate your reply, today has been the biggest transformation ever. It kind of replicates my mdma experience where nothing seems so solid anymore... everything seems see through when i look around like i am it and ive been around for infinity. Thanks man

  • @ncripzx Seems like you've seen it!

That thing between your ears is "observable" (or at least think-able). It can be stood away from and seen. IF that were you, that would be like a finger pointing at itself. It's impossible.

So what is observing the observation? What is experience happening to, outside the experience itself. Where is the center to life to which these things occur?

What stands behind the camera of perception? I can't find a thing, other than a thought of a thing.

  • @HylianSpirit there's just an emptiness, but even that could be a thought. It almost feels like there is no experiencer, just experience and I am the pure potentiality of that experience. If that makes sense

  • @ncripzx Just so! Life has no center. Behind it all, a big potential space. The present moment. No future, only thought of future in the present. No past, only thoughts of it in the present. No self, only thought of self in present. An ever flowing wave of experience with no experiencer; since you, yourself, were conceived as transitory experience. Thoughts happen to themselves, and your perception sees life entirely. Other lives see you too.

    We're life living itself.

  • @HylianSpirit aaah its so easy once you know that thought actually takes place in the present!

  • clip lacks a "punchline"(wisedom) ;)

    nice animations thx

  • @SzamanPsychedeliczny

This. This video lacks a proper ending, and leaves you hanging.

I recommend reading "I am a Strange Loop" by Douglas Hofstadter for some great advice on this subject.

  • @adamskibobs no are you?

  • Landmark Education uses some of these ideas in their seminars, as probably do a lot of other people. Very useful thoughts, to destroy the "I" (ego), or at least relieve it of its primal place

  • haha, funny and inspiring :)

  • Alan Watts is pointing to how rediculous the story of "i" is.

  • @iamgoateater I dont understand what I was supposed to get out of this either.

  • @adamskibobs

Alan was actually more of a libertarian.

  • I love forests and ecosystems. They may be dumb, but they make me feel good.

  • No he was a free thinker I think...

there are 2 alan watts...one is alan watts the other is allan watt

the one with the s is the one that i am familiar with

he passed away in the 70s. the other may still be alive i dont know. george norry had him on his show. he may be a commi pinko i dont know

  • Alan Watts book: The Wisdom of Insecurity, is a great book if anyone is interested. it's a small paperback. anyway. Alan Watts Rocks!!!

  • I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together...

  • @newsworthyable yes! the light through the beatless hehe =p

  • my feet hands and teeth are a part of MYself, and i am myself

  • @marpoq Your feet and hands are simply atoms 'playing along' for the duration of your life. You flow, a bit like a river, giving you the feeling you're really there at all. There are no 'real' objects at all in physical reality, only processes :)

  • Qrqrqrqr. I'm afriad you have the point wrong. He said the world doesn't give a damn. Although he is stating that that's not true.

When I hear and read things such as this I find it more fruitful to our minds(their I got calling it "mine") to ask what we believe on the subject and simply use his discussions to give us something to think about.

  • Brilliant idea to animate using watts' voice over. Love it !

  • yayaya watts is my hero!

  • this isn't depressing he's not telling you that this is a world that doesn't give a damn about us, he's saying that people naturally think that its true but its isn't.

  • Comment removed

  • @wakefulness I'm new to Watts. In what way does he think the world gives a damn about us? That's easy for privileged people like us to say, but how does the world give a damn about, say, the people who die every second of every day from starvation or malnutrition?

  • @qrqrqrqr1 We are the world. Do you care for yourself?

Ask yourself that and you don't need to be asking questions.

  • @qrqrqrqr1 ya you are new to watts. listen to some of his whole lectures not just lil tid bits and your questions will be answered. Don't assume that everyone on You Tube is priviledged just becuase they aren't dying from starvation, everyone suffers its just some people more than others.

  • Great how it ends on a closed-ended down note.

  • 1:30 hahahaha

  • All this time identifing with my body and my feelings. It's no wonder misery loves company. It's the only time people can ever relate with others, at least where I live. Where do I find others with this knowing.

  • Wow.

  • great.

  • I once was somewhat depressed by Watts but once your perspective changes and you listen to him more it makes absolute sense. I love some Alan Watts Philosophy. Buy his audio lectures online, Very very good

  • @manimalqb

where can i get those? to play on a European cd player or something in that category

  • @manimalqb Yea, I cant tell you how aligned this video is, with what I needed to hear at this exact moment. He is right...the ego is to blame, but to continue to blame it for everything is where some folks go wrong.

  • @manimalqb I couldn't agree with you more. I too found Watts depressing and somewhat frightening...but now, he lectures bring me great joy.

  • Brilliant, and so true :)

  • yeah, i agree with 2TheDeath

  • alan is Great!! but this video is a little offishly depressing :/

  • Really would l.o.v.e. to see part 2, 3 and 4 ;o)

Not depressing for me - rather... inspiring and reassuring :o)

  • That's kind of depressing. Does he go on to make a further point? I'd like to hear the rest if you can tell me where I can hear it. Thanks.
