  • I sort of grew up with Crawford singing Phantom, so I find it hard to prefer anyone else. But there's no denying Warlow's a tremendously gifted singer!

  • wow, that's a lot of fog! haha. bravo warlow! :D

  • The best Phan ever!

  • Gerard Butler shouted this role and never ever mention him in the same breath as Crawford or Warlow. NEVER. EVER. EVER> ever ? Okay ? EVER !!

  • @dabermanator I agree, but you are a hypocrite. You just mention them in the same sentence, which counts as an online breath.

  • He looks like Shaun Micallif here rofl

  • Can anyone tell me why some of the lyrics are different from the original when Michael Crawford sang it?

  • @doogix He probably ad-libbed some changes, or the composer of this particular arrangement (which might have been himself, I honestly don't know) decided to switch the words around a bit. Folks tend to do that in music, which I personally don't mind too much.

  • @doogix The lyrics were changed after the Original London Cast Recording. Largely, actually, because Crawford found some of the words hard to pronounce properly when he was in make-up.

  • I just found out Mr. Warlow lost his hair to cancer so my earlier comment was from ignorance.

  • @audiesgirl

    me too !!

  • 1:09 = shaun micalef

  • That's fantastic! What a voice! And he's becoming better and better by now

  • 好厲害

  • I have sat in the front row at a concert and he has the bluest eyes you have ever seen He is the best

  • One of the best of all I've listened to. He deserved a role as the Phantom!

  • The BEST fabulous Anthony

  • LOL, POTO's nothing without the mist. But this is too much mist for one stage.

    bless Anthony Warlow. He's great.

  • Splendid, den bästa Fantomen, perfekt !!..snyft..mycket fint och starkt och känsligt !!

  • Wow! This is the first version I've heard that I can actually compare to MC's. I love that both of their voices can seem so soft and gentle, yet powerful at the same time

  • The best version of this song I've ever heard is from young baritone singer Rhydian Roberts!

He sang this song at Lord L.Webber's 60th Birthday Party in Hyde Park and was personally chosen by Lord himself to sing it!

  • wow he's magnificant!!!! there aren't many people that can pull this song off. but the only person i would say is better would be hugh panaro..that's just my perspective though...

  • amazing..

  • It seems sad to diss either - they're both wonderful in my view. Later versions show how much development there has been in Anthony's voice. He was so good here but so much better now, in my view.

  • i dont think it is a direct insult to prefer another performer over another its a personal choice.

  • Anthony is great as Michael is! When was this Video shot?

  • is there anywhere i can get an mp3 of this? i don't like anyone else singing this.

  • He had hair!

  • ZOMG. I know, right?? Anthony Warlow + hair...how strange...

  • He's the best Phantom.

  • YES YES YES!!!

  • @mithol agreed. he's just amazing, his voice is haunting.

  • hahaha gerard was great at shouting and wen he managed to sing there was no control and he wasnt singing LIVE

    warlow kicks ass

  • Gerard himself said he had no idea why he was cast, so that's a moot point. We all know he can act but can't sing worth crap.

But this video is of Anthony Warlow. Who is way better than all of them. Well, Brad Little is a close second, in my opinion (though that may be because he was the phantom when I saw it).

  • Butler doesn't compare to Warlow or Michael Crawford "Emibabe716"! The movie fans are sooooo jealous that they diss Michael and compare him to Butler on a video that is about Anthony. Like this version of this song by Warlow. he does a good job. I wish the baby movie fans would get over there jealousy of Michael who is my favorite Phantom and deserves the title of living legend for this role. By the way "profairguitar"... Mike captured the anger and romantic/ sensual side of the Phantom PERFECT

  • he looks a bit like michael crawford and earl carpenter combined

  • Anthony is FREAKING GREAT!!!

But i thonk John Owen Jones is the BEST PHANTOM!!

  • Agreed!!! I am a huge fan of Anthony and think he is a gift from god with a incredible voice and stage presence and in many circumstances consider him the "best" as i do love him as the phantom, voice, interpretation pf character, but i personally think the greatest man that ever played the phantom would John Owen Jones

  • wow....even thoguh i prefer michael crawford, he's very good....and i thoguht he did a good enjolras, but his better suited to this part!

  • I love Anthony Warlow, have done since early 90's have all his albums, strangely enough though, I've never liked this song whoever sings it. Anthony is THE BEST, check out his album 'Midnight Dreaming', It's one I never put away, but ALL his albums are great, Love you Ant.....................................

  • pefection!!

  • As phantom... WARLOW IS THE BEST! NO ONE COMES CLOSE!,

If you actually study the character of the Phantom you should understand that the character is much darker and truer to the composer's intent when Warlow does it. MC is still brilliant, but Warlow takes the cake!

  • totally agree with you.

people don't realise, till they actually think about it properly, and really see what he does to the character.

HE IS LEGEND! LEGEND. LEGEND. LEGEND!

  • he's good but michael crawford captures the essence of phantom very very well, and IMO makes him the best phantom

  • To think that before I saw Anthony, I thought Gerard did a good job..SO BLIND.

He's married to my aunt's best friend!

    SQUEE!!!

Unfortunately they're not close...but I'm still begging her to let me meet him

    I live in hope..

  • HE HAS HAIR!!! lol

    I Love Anthony Warlow :)

    xxx

  • not gonna lie, and i know this isnt him. but i never really liked any video of michael crawford singing phantom, just not for me

  • man once anone listens to anthony warlow its hard to go back to anything else

  • I actually love and appreciate both men's talent. For me, personally, Anthony can't come close to Michael in bringing the role of the Phantom to life (and no, not just because he was the first or original - it was the way he performed the character). But Anthony does have a stronger, more operatic-type voice than he does and he still is a wonderful actor in his own right. Nothing wrong with loving both men.

  • They're both really good. I, personally, prefer Michael Crawford... but at least they're better than Gerard Butler. >:]

  • uuurgh. Gerard was revolting. lets be fair.

  • excuse me? I've heard some people prefer Gerard to Micheal..the only reason I don't is the fact that film is much different than stage. Gerard Butler captured the anger of the phantom fantastically, Micheal was more romantic, and Anthony is a perfect merger of the two.

  • dude i think gerard was ebtter than michael. gerard just brought something to the music michael couldn't

  • @Emibabe716 lol like a complete lack of musical talent!!!!!

  • Gerard was AMAZING. He captured him perfectly. So you need to be fair.

  • actually no i dont think he did. his interpretation was quite acceptable, but nothing compares to Anthony, and remember Gerard had what...600 takes to get each of those scenes to the best of his ability..how long does Anthony have -on stage?...2 hours...big difference. should be taken into consideration.

  • Saw this opening night in Melbourne, was amazing

  • great voice....♫♫♪♫♪♪

  • i saw Anthony when he was in phantom in Melbourne it was the best show i have ever seen in my life and with out a doubt he is the best phantom i have ever seen and heard yea

  • The best phantom i've ever heard.

  • Unfortunatly I have lost some interest in Anthony Warlow because of the bitter and uncalled for remarks by a "few of his fans" against Michael Crawford who has nothing but respect for Mr. Warlow and everybody else who has donned the mask after him. To the person who said Michael and Sarahs singing teacher should be ashamed of himself and skip town...well you got your wish! Ian Adam went one better...he passed away. Hope that makes your day. Can we respect both guys. They both are talented.

  • Actually,it is not Warlow's fault that some of his fans are rude, nor does he have any way of stopping them. Instead of being greater than they are and ignoring their posts, you not only take the time to respond, you also state that you like the artist less! This is a ghastly thing. I love Henk Poort's phantom the most (though sadly, he did it in Dutch),Then Michael Crawford's and then Warlow's,but still,Warlow is AMAZING. I will watch his stuff regardless of his fans' behaviour. You should too.

  • I would also love to see people quite trashing other artists wether they like them or not. It doesn't make your favorite look any better by being a jerk towards someone elses. I like Warlow and Crawford! I admit I like Michaels Phantom better after having seen AW and MC and watching there videos but I will not degrade Warlows talent, singing or call the man sarcastic names or disrespect him the way his fans do Michael. MCS multiple awards, amazing box office and legendary status speak for itself

  • My question is..."Why wasn´t Warlow the Phantom of the film?!?!?" (well...why wasn´t any of the GOOD singers the phantom) Imagine if Webber dind´t sayd that he wanted actors to really sing the songs...BAH!!!

  • gerard butler got the part because he could act, though he is not the most talented singer his voice carried the emotion through alot more than warlow can, even though warlow far surpasses him with singing ability. even in this video his face is plain with a sligth smile the whole time, no emotion whatsoever comes out, and im sure this is not how webber wants it

  • Honestly, Butler's voice is nothing to praise. I do acknowledge his acting talents and I won't slam him for being chosen to play the role -- after all, it wasn't his fault he was miscast. A high calibre singing voice just wasn't on Schumacher's priorities list, I suppose. XD

    Also...

  • Seeing Anthony *as* the Phantom rather than just *singing* Phantom is a different kettle of fish. Many a night he drives himself to the point of tears. You won't be disappointed with lack of emotion.

  • dont tell me anthony warlow cant act, hav u seen him perform this live? un-fricken-believable! i dont no how he sings so perfectly after putting so much emotion into the screaming! hes brilliant absolutely brilliant. he plays a completely different phantom to that of the movie character.

  • I wince when he screams. Can't be good for the voice! Ah well, the immense effort he puts into it; that's why we love him.

I'm also curious as to who gave me bad rep for stating a fact. Schumacher said he wanted a "young cast". He was primarily going for acting ability and looks, relying on technology to smooth out any kinks in the voice. Now I'm not condemning Butler -- he did act the part well! -- but be reasonable, Gerry fans: his voice cannot rival stage Phantoms' such as Anthony's.

  • absolutely agree with the wincing lol im like gahhhhh and yet hes still brilliant vocally afterwards - now thats technique hes one of the greatest vocallists and performers

  • Funny thing is, he wasn't doing that high-pitched, "Damn you! Curse you!" scream until the end of the Melbourne run -- he pulled it out for the last couple of shows and now it seems to have stuck. He also plays with Christine's hair in Final Lair, mouths the croaking along with Carlotta... It's so interesting to see how all the performers have evolved over the last year. I never tire of it.

Then again, I may just be mental. XD

  • lol yeh i no waht u mean haha not mental, just passionate- its quite admirable hehe i can relate

  • yeah i really think you have to see him live to evaluate his acting. here, he is only singing a song from the phantom of the opera, not trying to convey the phantom himself. I saw him when he had influenza during his Melbourne tour, an experience i will never forget.

  • That's one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard.

  • Anthony is just like a good wine. Imagine how good he is now after maturing for 17 years.

Even back then he has such beautiful, seductive hands...

    *~sign~*

  • Sorry "colino72" but this is not a dull song, in my opinon. It's beautiful. But yes, Warlow sings it brilliantly.

  • WOW... He's the best i've heard singing this.

  • No wonder he left opera. He can really act!

  • I'm really, REALLY hoping that wasn't a dig against opera. That's so sad to see people's misconceptions.

  • You can really really hope all you like but there's no misconception involved. It's an opinion based on highly observable evidence. The ability to act well is and always has been a secondary consideration in the art of opera and this has been confirmed to me by friends who regularly perform with professional, highly respected opera companies.

It's a classic example of snobbery toward alledgly "lower" forms of art which occurs in many fields. Warlow and Nigel Kennedy have the right attitude.

  • When you say snobbery, do you mean perhaps the way that you came off in sounding that opera was somehow "lower" than broadway? That's just the way you sounded. And it is, whether or not it's based on "observable evidence" or what your friends say, an opinion. Does choosing broadway over opera give you the right attitude? Seems pretty skewed to me.

  • I'm not responsible for how I "sound" to you, this is a matter of perception only. In fact, I never proposed any view that musical theatre was better than opera. My point was that in my opinion, the ability to act well is not a priority in opera. the main focus in vocal skill. In contrast, both the ability to sing and act are equally valued in musical theatre. But I didn't choose one over the other, they are different art forms in my view and shouldn't be judged against one another.

  • well he's a very dapper young fellow with quite an amazing voice, better than this mike dude everyone keeps raving about

  • Anthony Warlow and Michael Crawford are very respectable Phantoms in their own rights...no matter how much you like one over another, at least give the other the same respect. At least give Crawford some credit, he was the toast of the town as original Phantom in London, NY and LA - not bad for "this mike dude" as you wish to call him.

  • this mike dude had people camped out at the ahmanson theatre in la to get cancellation tickets because the show was sold out.people were paying 1k for a $50 ticket to see this mike dude.this mike dude won the tony.this mike dude won the oliver award.this mike dude along w/ sarah & steve made poto what it is today.w/o this mike dude many of us would not have had the opportunity to see poto because it wouldn't be such a phenomena & the longest running show in broadway history.should i go one?

  • whatever, I still like Joj's voice better, proly one of the best voices I've ever heard, much better than this mike dude. SHOULD I GO ON?

  • Just because somebody isn't the original doesn't mean they're not the best...

  • is their really a best? we all have our own personal taste & obviously differ. who is the best isn't the point i am trying to make. i just have a lot of respect for mc, sarah, steve, alw, hal prince, maria bjornson, charles hart, etc. their brilliance made poto what it is today.

  • Sorry "colino72"...but Michael Crawford has incredible dynamics!!! I've seen Warlow and Michael live in a whole performance and the audience reaction to both as well. Don't judge people you have never seen. I wouldn't have even posted on here but you have gone out of your way to diss Michael(who Warlow gives nothing but praise to!)on the MC sites! Don't watch if you know ahead of time that your just going to be nasty. I, on the other hand, actually respect MC and AWs talents.

  • Oh come on. Dynamics are definitely important (meaning fundamental) to interpreting a song, but Warlow does a fantastic job with them and there can be no arguing with the superiority of a trained voice (let alone one as beautiful as his) to Crawford's nasal production and whatever training he's had (a voice teacher whose claims to fame are Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman? Really? I'd skip town and change my name I were him/her).

  • OMFG He had hair back then!!! O_o'

  • aw sigh He gets me EVERY time...just amazing

  • Incredible use of dynamics here, especially when you compare it to other versions (Crawford, particularly). This is such a dull song, really, that it needs a lot dynamics and variation of voice quality to make it interesting. Warlow does it brilliantly

  • its just stunning! there's no other way to describe him!

  • ya mum!

  • I love his voice!

  • I think he is better in this version, only because with age obviously you lose some control of your voice, the high Ab in this version he is able to drill, whereas in the later version right when he hits it his heavy opera vibrato comes in as well, I mean both are amazing but I think he was more control over his voice in this version

  • or10z2k...which version you speaking of?

  • yes age does make your voice change but he also had throat cancer so that has changed his voice dramatically. this version is great but if u hear him live in the phantom now it still gives you goose bumps. hes got a great amount of talent and even now he is still fantastic.

  • Warlow is amazing here and incredible now. He has only gotten better with age. Truly one of the greatest male vocalists of all time.

  • Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. More opinions are welcome.

  • I like the one when he's older because he sounds more confident and experienced

  • So I'm curious to know what people think. What do you guys prefer? Anthony Warlow's young or old version of music of the night? Both are up here on youtube.

  • To be honest, the older version. It's more matured and complicated.

  • He is really the best!

  • bravo! i feel so emotional and touched

  • Thank you for posting it! He's the best Phantom ever!

  • Wow. Loving his voice. Thanks so much for posting!

  • So amazing. I would love to see him as the Phantom.

  • I saw the latest Australian run of the Phantom of the Opera, and he's as brilliant as the last time (probably better) i saw it when he last played the Phantom 10 years ago

  • Is it just me.. or does anyone else get jealous when they hear someone sing like that..? lol I wish I could sing that well!

  • I'm green. :)

  • If this gets taken down I will be majorly pissed!

  • He's one person I'd pay big bucks to see live. I mean... wow. Wow. Just wow.

  • Lovely song. Amazing song. Beautiful show. I love this Song *hums along*

  • I now declare my undying love for Warlow....Phantom was amazing...

  • HELL YEAH! Warlow is amazing!

  • Oooooh, you guys are making it SO much harder for me to wait until the 8th of next month!!!

  • Saw Anthony two nights ago and he was AWESOME!

He is a legend and that is all there is about it.

  • I was a Rob Guest fan, but now i have a new Phantom to love, I cried from the opening note of the show to the very last night, I met Anthony after the show and told him that he was welcomed back to melbourne, He has matured and now sings the songs with some new vocal range and speaks some of the words and that made it even more emotional, Anthonys Phantom had me think about life and love alot, his hand movemants and the way he uses the stage, a true preformer, Thanks Anthony.

  • So true! The hand movements when he was sitting on the bench when Christine was singing "The Point of no Return" He had the cloak on, so all he had to convey his emotions were his hands, and he did it absoloutly perfecly!!!

I wish i could go again!!!!

  • Agree with every word. Talk about bringing life experience to the Phantom. So much passion in this new production that comes from experience.

Specially agree about those hands.... purr.

  • I saw Anthony perform this last night in the opening Preview sho of Phantom and WOW! ABSOLOUTLY BREATHTAKING! As perfect as this video is, in full character he is mesmorising!

  • I was there too, it was a remarkable show but Anthony was definitely the highlight. Every time he sang he sent chills down my spine. Music of the Night was without a doubt my favorite moment out of the show, the audience wouldn't stop clapping, the orchestra had to cut us off.

  • Gorgeous performance (and a gorgeous guy)

  • heck yes!

  • Based on what I've seen and heard. He has definitely evolved from A mere diety to a God of Music.

  • Anthony Warlow is definitly the best actor of musical theatre of all times. No doubts

  • What other songs do you have him singing?

  • I have a few ones but not posted it. If you want send me a message.

  • just incredible

  • Does anyone have any of Ant in the Mikado? It went round Australia a few years ago and I'd LOVE to see some again.

  • I'm now just counting down the days til Spetember 8th, when i see him in Melbourne with MissCinta! HOORAY!!!

  • I'll be going in July if I can help it. VIP tickets only for me.

Its going to be spectacular in every sense of the word.

  • he needs to come to the states. i'd fly from kansas 2 NYC just 2 c him peform

  • I know someone has a rob guest video and u i am trying to get it, but i thought it would be awesome if someone had avideo of him

  • If anyone has any of him actually preforming that would be amazing. He has such a beautiful voice. One of the best ive heard. He makes it seem so effortless.

  • Good luck. He did it only for one year when it opened in 1991. Then he had to duck out for chemo, I heard. Rob Guest took over the roll. But you can bet someone will video him when it opens again. Its big event... its finally returning to Australia.

  • He hasn't lost anything with age. Except maybe his hair.

  • xD, I was just about to type that before I read your comment.

  • LOL...great minds think alike!!!

  • very good

  • heck yes! Ant back in the mask... *drools* now we just need more details on it though... Christine casting, possibility of Sydney tour etc.

  • renee, I love you forever and ever. I went to heaven watching this. ack sigh. we must go. we will go. I'm starting my saving tomorrow!!

  • Indeed he is; my 21st b'day present is all lined up!!

  • Wow, absolutely fanatastic :) I hear he's coming back in 2007 as the Phantom --Australia.

  • *jaw drop* *gasp* *whimper* *whimper* *whimper* *THUD*

  • Just beautiful thank you!

  • God that "BE" will forever remain in my mind.
