The film's story is told from the son's point of view. It's much more about him; the father is only incidental in the film.

unquestionably -- it's a terrible thing to discover about one's parent, but nevertheless, all drama needs an inciting action or character, so he does serve his literary purpose by providing the underlying impetus for the boy's story

Not really... the images are more the act of the main carachter's imagination. He's a troubled child who's father makes him become part of a world children should not know about.

I've just read the book, but it is pretty emotional.
